Are you sure the problem is not caused by Channel Tools?  I can tell you that, on my rig, I've had many issues with Channel Tools (but note that I'm still using X3e).  Do you have the same problem when using the PC or the VST version of the CA-2A?  When you removed the CA-2A for testing, did you try replacing it with other compressors to see if they plays nice with the Channel Tools?

I did use a different compressor and it worked fine. I don't use the PC, so I can't comment on that.

Lol. No thanks. I've got enough crap in my computer. If I start yearning for hardware I'll visit Vintage King.

Did you really get a UAD 2? If so, I can't wait to hear what you think about it. The LA2A and 1176 comps are absolutely fantastic! :)

Yea, the LA2A and 1176 are on the list. What else do you think is "can't live without"?

Oh my friend, you are in for a wild ride! :)

OK, don't do ANYTHING without researching first. The UAD forums (http://uadforum.com/activity.php) have a bunch of good people on it and the question "what should I buy" is asked OFTEN. Do a search and you'll get lots of good advice. When in doubt - check here with us and on the UAD forum before making a purchase! :)

A few basic things to consider:

1. Buy during sales. The list price of these plugins is wetarded, but you can get great deals.
2. You will probably get a coupon with your Octo for getting a number of plugins. Demo the ones that seem of interest to you, and do your best to use the coupon on the more expensive plugins.
3. The "collections" such as the LA2A, 1176, and Pultec often go on sale - don't use your Octo coupon to get those. Use the classic versions until a sale comes up and then jump on them.
4. You can try out any plugin in demo mode for something like 15 days. When you buy a plugin, it resets all of your demos so use this in your strategy.
5. I would not buy any plugin on UAD that you can buy native - ala the Plugin Alliance/Brainworx plugins.

Now, favorite/must have plugins are very subjective but I'll share with you my thoughts.

DISCLAIMER: I have a TON of UAD plugins and I love most of them! The Fairchild for example, or the API eqs... but I wanted to really pair this list down to my personal top favorites (amongst a whole bunch of favorites). Not sure that made sense, but it's true. :)

1. 1176 and Pultec collections are a must have. (man oh man the Pultec is sweet!). Again though, I would try to get these collections on sale.
2. I LOVE the Ampex! I have the Studer and the Oxide but I always prefer the Ampex. I wish I had only gotten the one tape sim, and the Oxide (for me) was a total waste. This would be a good one to get with your Octo coupon.
3. The new API 2500 bus comp is my favorite bus comp at the moment. Another expensive new plugin, so one to consider for your Octo coupon.
4. The Neve 1073 is absolutely stellar!
5. Ocean Way to me is a tricky beast, but when you get it to work it is amazing what it can do. It's pricey, so this is a good one to use your initial Octo coupon on.
6. The Fatso is wonderful and very unique (to me).

Let me know if you have any questions - I've been down the rabbit hole deep for some time now! :)

Re: Replacement for Cakewalk's CA-2A 2017/03/29 14:28:54 (permalink)
OMG I wrote up a lengthy post about UAD and plugins, and it disappeared when I clicked post!

Short short version:

I LOVE SO MANY of the plugins, but I wanted to pick just a few of my favorites for you to consider.

1. Buy the LA2A, 1176, and Pultec collections when on sale - don't use your Octo coupon for those use it for the expensive plugins. (the Pultec is AMAZING)
2. I have all the tape sims, but prefer the Ampex head and shoulders above the rest. This would be a good one for the Octo coupon.
3. The API2500 is my favorite bus comp. It's new and expensive, so another option for your coupon.
4. The Fatso is unique and fun.
5. Ocean Way doesn't always work but when it does it is stunning. Also expensive, and worthy of your Octo coupon.
6. The Neve 1076 finds its way onto all projects - it is superb.

The UAD forum (http://uadforum.com/activity.php) is full of friendly people, and the "what should I buy" threads are all over the place so check them out and ask questions before purchasing anything. Also, you can demo any plugin for 15 days, and when you make a purchase all of your demos get reset - use this to your advantage.

Also, I wouldn't buy anything on UAD that you can get native (think Plugin Alliance/Brainworx).

Let me know if you have any questions! :)

This GS thread is a good place to read about the most popular UAD plugins.

I'd say the new SSL channel strip is also well worth trying.

Good stuff guys.

James. Great advice. thanks.
You used the word “BUY” a lot. LOL. Um, I bought. it’s Done.
Yea right..
Yea, I’ll refer to your advice later with the coupons and sales and stuff. But, I’m not buying anymore for awhile. I bought 13 plugs with the card discounted.

Created account at UAD but still can’t do anything to see how it all works. Need the dongle, er, card first.

I’m a little unclear on what exactly I CAN choose.
Like say, the LA-2a classic leveler "collection". Is that one plugin I can use in my bundle?

But yea, the Ampex, LA2A, 1176, and Pultec , Ocaen Way, Neve,
“Ocean way doesn’t work”? You mean like broken?
Do you have the EMT. Seems to be a favorite. Moreso, I think, than the Lexicon.
I’ll check the forum there. Been watching the FAcebook UAD page.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Thanks Tom and Larry
Yea, slippery slope indeed. You look at the UAD instance chart and like 16 channel strips and I'm done. WTF.
I guess freeze a lot. Which then sort of sways you to their interface with Unison technology and print IT on the way in..

Eddie. Thanks. good read.

timidi,

Did you buy a used card that came with plugins or brand new? What plugins came with the card?

What I meant about Ocean Way is I often find it hard to get it to work on a track, but when it does it is magical. I invited a friend of mine over and he's a professional touring sound guy and he walked me through using it and I'm getting much better results now, but I'm still a novice with it.

I do have the EMT - actually I have all of the reverbs. The EMT is indeed something special. I just left it off my list because I wanted to keep the list manageable and not give you 10 must haves! :) That said, if you need a reverb or just want an exceptional plate reverb, grab the EMT!

To the OP: have you considered other "optical" compressor plugins that aren't LA-2A emulations? For example:
These may float your boat even better than a true LA-2A. Have fun!

Yea, bought new from sweetwater .
bought the card + 3plug bundle, and a 10 plug bundle.
Actually, I just got a call from my rep and he says UAD won't let them do the deal. (can't do a bundle price on a bundle price or something).  It was SW's computer screw up I guess.
I wrote customer support at UAD to see if they'll fix it. I might just scrap the whole thing. Kinda pissed ATM.

Assuming you purchased it (or got it when it was free) you could try reinstalling it from the command centre. It's got it's own installer.

Hello, I did get the free one when it was offered. My problem however, is that i was able to load the ca2a directly into the prochannel plugins and now am no longer able to as the ca2a does not even list in the prochannel offered plugins. As anyone else using platinum noticed this? I believe that a true one point cakewalk offered platinum users the ca2a as a direct prochannel plugin. At this time, however, seems that we are no longer offered the prochannel version of the plugin. I am surprised no other users have noticed this omission.
Perhaps something I should wrong with my install?? In any case, for those who have platinum, please check to see if the ca2a loads as a prochannel plugin.
