Replacement for Cakewalk's CA-2A
Love the CA-2A, but it's the only plugin that can cause weird behavior in my rig. My latest problem was a crash trying to freeze a track with this chain: CA-2A -> Channel Tools -> Waves SSL G Channel. Removing Channel Tools or the CA-2A solved the problem, so it could be an interaction between them, but I have had weird issues with the CA-2A before (but without the crashing). This was my first crash in almost a year, so it was kind of a shock, lol. So, what's your recommendation for a solid replacement? I'm leaning towards the Waves CLA-2A, but I'm open to other suggestions. Regards, Dan

TRackS White? That was my "go to" before the CA2A. But if you're a Waves (not here) user, maybe that's the best way for you to go. T

If you aren't on a strict budget, there's a newer LA-2A emulation from Black Rooster Audio. It's very good, but pricey at $129. A demo is essential, since although the tone and saturation modeling are really nice -- it does sound like a vintage unit -- you may or may not dig the compression action, which can get rather pumpy on some material. Here's a video that gives you an idea of how it performs. Cheers, Eddie

Cakewalk's CA-2A still has an early release/update/beta/fix that is only available via the Rollback menu in Command Center. I think the only thing they fixed was the crashing in Windows 10 due to changes in the Windows C Runtime, but I'm curious why Cakewalk hasn't made this newer version the actual public release? In Command Center I see version 2.0.1.97 is the public release but there is a version 2.0.1.112 Early Release in the rollback menu.

I'm running Win7 here, so that fix may not resolve my issue. Again, I think it is an interaction between CA-2A and Channel Tools. I could work around it, but I don't want to, lol. Dan

That is a wonderful compressor indeed, but about as far removed from a CA2A as you can get and still be in the same general product category. For myself, I'm perfectly happy running Pro-C in "opto" mode. Close enough for me.

While I love the Pro-Q2, the Pro-C and I have never seen eye to eye. I did recently use it in a project as an effect compressor for a special need, and it worked perfectly for that. I probably just don't completely grok it yet like I do the SSL or LA-2A variants. Regards, Dan

It is for me. But I've had several other less drastic incidents over the last year that makes me want to stop using it. I bought it originally years ago, but I'll ditch a plugin in a heartbeat if it causes problems. Dan

Having trialled Waves LA-2A emulation, I found Cakewalk's to be better. Better to the point I use the AU version in Logic as well as the Windows version. I've no real idea how accurately any of them emulate the hardware of course, not having a hardware LA-2A to compare them to, and the original units are now so old surviving examples are probably not as they were when brand new anyway.
I just find Cakewalk's one easier to dial in, more flexible and a bit more 'musical' for want of a better word. You might disagree, and the Waves one is certainly worth trialling to find out. Just don't pay full price unless you really need it now, almost everything Waves makes goes on sale sooner or later.
