Revenge! (New mix - 11/23/2016)

Here is my new song, "Revenge!". After my last song, "Mind Machine", I wanted to do something simpler and more straightforward.

This is mostly Omnisphere/Keyscape/Trillian, with some real and virtual guitars. Drums are from BFD3, played by me using a keyboard. The bass during the chorus is NI's Rick, parallel processed through the Ampeg SVX plugin. That Ampeg adds some very nice dirt to a bass.

I must add, that the NI S88 is a wonderful midi controller. The mod slider (instead of a wheel) is supremely easy to control and very expressive.

Update 20161107: I've updated the Bandcamp version with adjusted guitar levels.

Update 20161123: Bandcamp version updated with better snare processing. Took several tries to get this where it needed to be. I think I'm done, lol.

or (original version)

Hope you enjoy and, as always, any comments/suggestions are always appreciated. If you have any questions about how the track was put together, feel free to ask.

Regards,
Dan

Nice - quite different from your recent stuff but I like it.
Listening on crappy PC speakers at the mo - I'll listen in the studio over the weekend.

Excellent track Dan, always a pleasure to hear a new one from you. I admire the restraint in your pieces, nothing is over-played, everything serves the tune. It builds really well too, then releases tension beautifully at around 3.30, like that a lot. Great bass... Good title too, I could imagine of those scenes where the hero is preparing for the big showdown...

    Hi Dan
I liked this song a lot,  especially the guitars.
I've had the NI S61 for a while now and I'm still not sure if I like the MW and PB sliders instead of the wheel. I try to think of the slider as a guitar string but I'm just not getting the technique down. I need more practice I suppose.

    Thanks for sharing.

A real pleasure to listen. Well balanced and loud enough, clear separation of instruments. A pro mix. The suspence at 2:38 is fantastic.  The only thing that bothers me is the snare sound, like it does not match the rest of the kit.

Your mixes are such a treat to listen to.

When that guitar riff comes in around 2:24 - more balls on that please! Ditto for the guitar rhythm around 3:15. I know you have diversity of arrangement in mind, lots of dynamics, loud sections and then soft. It all sounds really good.

Do you hear this mix as slightly top heavy, slightly bright? Could the bottom end have more weight? I'm only asking, because you are a friggin' pro at this . . . and the turnip truck I fell off of left me in the road a long time ago.  :)

How are you liking/loving Keyscape? How did it show up here? I heard some chimey piano in the intro, anything else?

    thanks Dan,

Beautiful mix, cool synth and guitar work. Like that a lot. Only the quantised drums come across quite lifeless and impassionate. That tune with a real drummer and bass player, that'll be really cool ... anyway, real drummers with superb timing usually don't live next door, so I discovered that working the tempo grid in creative ways can help a lot to make it feel more organic and surprisingly the drum libs cope quite well if you feed them a farily flexible (yet subtle) timing variation

Very polished... Nice spectrum of sounds used throughout. Loved the lead synth sound

Thank you James! The entire time I was working on this, I had a noir scene in my head where a guy finds his murdered wife/girlfriend then goes on a tear to kill the murderer, but couldn't find a decent image to use as a song cover. Then I ran across this image of the girl walking away from something getting blown all to hell...

As for the bass, there were too many in use, and after the first mix, I realized that I'd messed up the intro section and had to add Taurus pedal bass to give it some weight. There is actually a synth bass playing along with Rick as well. It adds some nice glide movement to the bass line, but doesn't cover up the dirty Rick sound.

Awesome piece Dan ! Loved the smooth yet assertive flow of the track. The lead true to its name, led the track really well. I just thought that a few sounds/fills here and there felt slightly out of tune. But I guess that might have been deliberate for creative variation or probably just my ears

    Thank you Bill!

Mostly, I try to avoid the center except for any instruments carrying the melody. I also like to keep things balanced, so if there is a hi-hat on the right, any other bright percussion will go opposite. Ping-pong delays are your friend. Beyond that, there are no rules that I follow.

great stuff of course. some really cool mixing tricks and the subtle harmonic shifts in  the backing sections are genius. the only thing i would change is aroudn 2'15, when the guitars come in under the lead, i'd pull back some of the verb/delay on the lead then, and beef up the guitar

    Hi, Dan,

Wow, this is truly excellent all the way around!

Well written and played, nicely textured synth work with some really cool twists and turns, cool guitar stuff, and a stellar, pro sounding mix!

The mix is crisp, wide and full sounding with a nice punch to the bottom end.

    Fantastic work, Dan, really outstanding!

On the plus side the piece is overall excellent, as usual.  I particularly liked the way it built up at the beginning.  As a minor crit, I would agree with Scotty's comment that some more thematic changes would have been nice.

Thank you Bjorn! I found the slider strange, at first. I really like it now though. I used both quite a bit in this song.

Wow, this is a bit different for you!   It seems a bit more soundtrack-ish rather than orchestral/epic, and it works well.  Really great dynamics from section to section, lots of interesting sounds swirling around, and that Omnisphere lead tone is anything but static.  I think the whole thing is alive.

A real pleasure to listen. Well balanced and loud enough, clear separation of instruments. A pro mix. The suspence at 2:38 is fantastic.  The only thing that bothers me is the snare sound, like it does not match the rest of the kit.

Thanks Pawel! I went through a ton of snares in BFD until I found what I wanted. I like the metallic ringiness of this snare for the context of the song. I did add some space to the snare to make it a bit bigger and that did add some separation from the rest of the kit, but I'm okay with that.

I heard some chimey piano in the intro, anything else?

    thanks Dan,
    -Tom

Thanks for the listen Tom! Glad you liked it! I've gone back and forth on bringing up those guitars, and I'm still not sure. I did bring up the second in the mix you listened to, before it was the feeling of a guitar, lol.

The bottom is a tad light on this, but the pulse bass during most of the song becomes overbearing if I give it too much weight. The Rick is, well, a Rick, so there's that.

I like Keyscape, though, in all honesty, it really is an expansion for Omni 2. The instruments are incredible well-sampled. In this song, I used one of the DUO instruments, which is the chimey piano you hear throughout the song, not just the intro.
