Road Trip, with drums tweaked

OK, you've probably seen the video of this one, but I wanted to get it down on my DAW so it sounded a bit better.  I also finally figured out how to play along with his drum and bass track (duh!!), so this is actually the right tempo the whole way thru.  Must have been too stressed before the performance to figure that one out.    Anyway, here it is.  Please don't feel like you have to listen again or comment.  It was a good exercise for me, and having to play along to the drum track showed me a few errors in my sight-reading.  And no, this isn't a one-shot through deal either.  It is mostly, but I had to edit a few places.  I haven't been playing it every day for a few weeks so it's already gettinga little rusty.  :(  Maybe some day...  Anyway, Jon Schmidt doesn't have to worry about me taking his spot.  :)

Thanks to Jon Schmidt for the music and drum/bass track...all for $1.98.  And several months of practice.  :)

Road Trip

7/12:  Thanks to Jonas for working his magic on the drum track to calm that bass down.  I appreciate it!

I will have the honor of first responding.

Sounds like your stretching out a bit.  I love the happy vibe and the piano well played as always.

Let me be the second to respond. Yes, this is not the typical Janet that I am used to hearing. You are rocking out, lady! Great job! You can join my band any day! Nope....never mind, we're too country.

Thanks guys.  When I grow up I want to be able to write music like this.

Well, that, and play it live correctly!  :)

Gee, I like that steady beat! First I 've got some Bruce Hornesby vibes. The chord and key changes are almost inhumane but you manage! It's definately rocking.

Awesome job Janet! Whew...what a cool array of chord changes with some great melody! I had to play along with this 3 times to see where it was going and 3 more times to have fun with it...I love it! :)

Pretty nice playing on a good tune. I'm going to get a nice piano soft synth one of these days so I can sound just like this. Your playing is always an inspiration to me.

Equality, I love that beat too.  It's so much more fun to play along with it! :)  And those chord changes aren't hard if you're reading music.  :)

Danny, you played along 6 times?  Wow.  And you played in Db?  I'm impressed!  :)  This is my favorite of his (and it was his favorite at the time.)  You should watch him play it.

Thanks, Chappel!  I highly recommend Ivory Grand pianos. :)

    Thanks Herb.

Hahaha yeah I sure did. Well, it started in C and got to what *I* call C# later in the tune. Switching keys and using loads of chords isn't a problem for me. Don't let the hair and rocker image fool you. LOL! As long as you don't play in Eb or G# and I don't have to solo I'm ok. Hahaha! For some reason, I've never had to play in those keys much. I can play in them, don't get me wrong, but it's been rare for me. When someone plays something in rock in Eb, I know they've tuned down half a step so I just play it in E.

Yeah I had a good time playing rhythm guitar for you on this to add some more power to it. I tried to solo a bit over it, but it only worked in some spots...and walked on top of you in others since the piano is moving so well. Really loved this Janet....excellent job! See...sometimes it's good to take a little break. :)

True, it could be C#, but it happens to be written in Db.  lol.  Some pianists have more trouble playing in sharps than flats for some reason.  I guess 6 sharps can be kind crazy since I'd have to remember to play E#.  Anyway, I'm sure this would sound great with a guitar playing along.  Fun! :)

    Hi, Janet,

How are you?  I hope you and your family had a great 4th of July!

Wow, I must have missed the first version, but this is truly fantastic!  Amazing playing, as always, great sounding piano, and a really bouncy, upbeat vibe.

I definitely agree with equality about the Bruce Hornsby reference, this really sounds great!

Hmm...I wonder what happened to the comments I posted yesterday?  Well, I'll try again...

Phil:  Thank you. It actually isn't that difficult to play or I wouldn't have been able to play it.  :)  Thanks for the kudos!

Thanks James.  Yeah, he gets inventive with his chord changes, that's for sure.

Robby, you shouldn't have.  :)  You may have heard this if you watched the video...but this is better quality audio for sure.

Thanks Bruce.  Yeah, Ivory's got a great sound, huh?  :)

Thank you, Bob.  Yes, we had a good 4th.  I hope you did too.  Thanks for stopping by. :)

    Thank you, Chas.

Thanks, Vicente.  Yeah, it's much more fun to play along with drums.  I should remember that if I attempt another piece. :)

Thanks Larry.  :)  Yeah, he's a good writer for sure.  No, they didn't quite fall off, but they do hurt enough that I can't practice much more than 20 minutes a day on a piece like this.  That could be why it takes me so long to memorize it.  Yeah, that's it...it's not my age or any other deficiency.  lol

    Hi Janet,

    The performance is great.

The mix has some issues that should be easy to address. The mix feels really compressed to me.   Some of it could be the byproduct of MP3 encoding, I'm not sure. But if you are compressing/limiting the master bus I'd suggest going easier and/or softer.

The kick drum dominates the mix too much, particularly at the beginning.  It feels really heavy, especially for a nice, light piece like this.  Is it possible to use a softer/rounder kick sample?

Is there a bass guitar part here as well?  Even with my system I can't quite pick it out.  If there is a bass part it should come up in volume...to about the volume of where the kick drum is at now.

    I enjoyed that very much.

Thanks so much, Jonas.  I was wondering about any mix issues.  For starters, I downloaded the bass/drums track from Jon's website.  So, I can't do anything about the kick or the bass.  I don't hear the bass either, unless I'm not playing the piano. I should write him about it and see if he knows about the issue. :)

But, I could certainly pull back on the compressor.  I wonder if I could make the kick drum sound better with some eq?

Thanks again for stopping by and for the ideas! :)

Really nice playing, Janet, forceful, not too swingy, in the pocket.  Mix-wise, the piano is wider than the drums--the drums sound like they're inside that great big Ivory sample set.

Thanks so much!   Well, the drums are an mp3 I downloaded from Jon S., who wrote the song.  Jonas worked on the track and sent it to me last night, so I'll remix that and upload it again as soon as I get a chance.  But wow--what good ears you have! :)  Thanks again.
