You're probably running into the same issue with Live (and Sonar) as many Sonar users encountered trying to use P5 - attempting to bend Live's workflow to the same way you were used to in P5. I pretty much guarantee that if you work through the included lessons in Live (I figure the lessons are included with the Lite version) and give it a little time, then you will soon find yourself getting comfortable with it...I did and the general impression I get from other P5 users that have switched is that it takes a little while to adapt at first.

OK ............... just for kicks I took your advise and fired up "Live" again. (I want to be as fair and optimistic as possible) I read (again) the tutorial lessons.

There is absolutely no way that the "Live" platform is as intuitive as P5. I realize that I am accustomed to the Cake way of doing things, and that I have been using Sonar and P5 for a long time, but I feel the same way about "Live" as I did with FL, quite some time ago.

............ It does not lend itself to the process, without getting in the way all of the time. P5 is so simple in it's design, that it is just too easy to forget about the program and think only about the piece that you are working on.

............ I will admit that if it were not for P5v2, that the program would have never reached it's popularity. The original version mostly sucked.

I still miss a few P5 tools, mostly the alias factor, and some features in pattern edition.

Word. Redux just doesn't cut it for me either...

I think the point is to force oneself to learn Live. It is the de-facto standard in pattern-based production. We know there will be no more P5. So that leaves only the option to learn Live. Unless one wants to eschew a pattern-based paradigm altogether.

Why not keep using P5? Does it have to be upgraded all the time? I like it the way it is.

I will keep using P5 as it is.I don't see a need for it to be constantly upgraded.I still use the original Acid program once in a while.Never did upgrade that.Upgraded from Cakewalk 3 to Sonar 3 studio though.

I guess it comes down to opinion, but I think Live does a good job of remaining intuitive considering all the features it has and does a good job on the workflow front. It will however take at least a week of using it before it will start to 'click'; expecting to get to grips with a full featured host in an hour or two is pretty unlikely. Anyway, if you're happy with P5 as is, then great...I'm not going to try and persuade you to change, as I am neither on Ableton's payroll, nor a fanboy

Just one final thought: I wonder if P5 would have remained as streamlined in it's workflow had Cakewalk given it regular feature updates...it's very difficult to keep adding features to a host without affecting the overall feel or making it appear cluttered (see Sonar and most other major hosts), so I think Ableton has done a good job balancing things with all the added features over the years. It'll also be interesting to see how Studio One does with retaining it's current workflow as more features are added to it...

In the end, when someone feels that its time they need something else that has a few extra work flow features, then your going to have to make a change. I will admit, Im spoiled with how easy Project 5 works, but it has its flaws. I pretty much almost never use automation in P5. Its just feels so uninspiring to me that i dont even want to deal with it.

Live is a nice program, but I still have that P5 mentality that it keeps me from sitting down, and really trying to accomplish something in the program. I do feel like I want something new to play with though. Im just not sure which program. I will still be using P5 for my current work. but i do plan on getting a new program sometime. :)

Its been hard for me to transition from P5 as well!

I know logic pretty well and still haven't used it for any music creation yet but soon that is what I am going to turn to, I love the work flow in it and it doesn't feel way to different than P5 IMO, just a lot more stuff. The piano roll Logic offers is the main reason I really dig the program.

I could never get into Live for some reason, just don't like the interface it offers but than again I feel if you use anything for long enough and get used to it you will eventually like the way it works!

I'm lucky as P5 does everything i need from a DAW so i'll probably be using it for the rest of the time i'm making music.  I don't think i'd have the notivation to learn how to use another one anyway and i could'nt be arsed to to be honest.

I like it the way it is.

Well, you know... I know people that still use Cubase on the Atari ST. There's no shame in liking where you are.

That being said, I've pretty much switched over to SONAR exclusively, and Live for performing onstage. However, if SONAR 8.5 survives my trial by fire, then I'll wave goodbye to Live, too.

My mates 'studio' is still based around an Atari ST, and in all fairness it's rock solid. Mind you he has a whack of vintage external gear Roland 808, Roland 909, Juno 106 etc. so doesn't really need a PC to run software synths. He just laughs at all the VST's trying to emulate the stuff he's got.

Still look in regularly but like a quite a few of the others have switched over to Live.

I came from Sonar, and I still use it for a lot of things.

Oddly, I get a lot of great ideas when I start in P5, but seem more likely to finish things in Sonar.

Sometimes I start out in P5, sometimes in Sonar.  For whatever reason, he projects I start in Sonar are more likely to be finished than those I start in P5.

I some occasions when I am already using  P5 in rewire mode, the audio tracks are already in Sonar. But I do export/import my midi tracks.

I never come here anymore.  I don't even have P5 installed on my new machine.  OF course, that new machine is a blender.

I still visit from time to time.

Ol P5's still sexy for a gal her age.  <sigh>
Too bad her daddy took her tips and stopped payin' her tuition, she coulda been sometin.

I occasionally still play with a couple of old P5 projects that I never finished, but I use Sonar for new stuff.
I'd still use P5 if there was an easy way to migrate everything to Sonar.
