And once I yank all my old files off the old rig I'll have much more room. The laptop faddling can wait until I've gotten further in my education. I keep getting distracted by life so it's taking forever. :-(

Indeed. Just successfully created my first drum loop with SD3 and the step sequencer. I can pretty much do everything else rather easily but I've never worked with MIDI stuff before and I no longer own a drum kit. It's the final frontier. :-)

i bought the acer one for my son two years ago,now on this birthday last week i got him an asus at micro center including a 4 gig upgrade(now he has 6 gigs)it was 289.00 shawn you should check them out on line,i go to the walk in store in boston but they have stuff online, its better then new egg in my opinion. so now his old acer is my 6 year old daughters. i run sonar on two computers side by side. both are custom builds. amd phenom 2 black editions. 8 gigs of ram one is a 4 core the other is a 6 core. the 6 core is supposed to be in the same catagory as the intel i7. i have an intel i7 and i cant tell the difference between them, matter of fact im using the amd 6 core for a reason.i think its better for what im doing. i custom build all my own computers and ones i sell. i can build a decent computer for under 400.00 bucks with auesome specs to run sonar. no hick ups.

I run Sonar 7 on my ASUS netbook via a Tascam us1641. I beefed it up with a faster hard drive and 2 Gigs of RAM. I think it's a 1.7 Mz atom processor. Anyhow works great to record about 8 tracks live, then it dies. Cannot do any soft synths at all. I borrow my wifes Lenovo Think pad now. The net book is great for playback of backing tracks at gigs. Not realy a good daw.

konradh Question about what appears to be an Akai LPK25: Problem is that it works off and on: mostly off. Lately when I plug it in, Sonar doesn't recognize it. is it plug and play, or do I have to dig around and try to find whatever installation disk came with it to do a reinstall? Have you ever had any trouble getting Sonar to recognize or enable it in Preferences? is there any trick I should know about? It is a very cool little keyboard and ideal for lots of things (like bass). I have the similar Korg keyboard. The install info states that the driver will have to be installed for each USB socket used for their devices. So, I attempt to connect it to the same port. Was using short words the first time it would not work. J

No engineer ever got fired for using a U-87. That would be the king of the vocal mics (and great for other stuff as well).

Well I guess if I included EVERYTHING it would be less but between my comp, DAW and interfaces that mic costs more. Speaking of which I need a good quality but inexpensive vocal mic. Seeing as how the heavy gearheads are here... any advice? I'd like to keep it under $300... preferably around $150.

Always try to buy quality used gear in good condition. You might start looking for an AT 4033 (buy a used one, I got mine new). I also have a Studio Projects C1 (once again, bought used.)

There are some excellent looking studios here. I've just dismantled mine, after five years of so called "writers block." In its place is my PS3 and racing seat. Yeah, embarrassing huh?? I've not completely given up though. In an effort to get back into the swing I have just bought myself a reassuringly expensive laptop. My DAW will be X1 Producer, once I've managed to get the darned thing downloaded. I will only be creating synth music, with a bit of electric guitar thrown in. My main synth will be Absynth 5, and I will augment that with Battery 3 (I've only just managed to get both of them registered on my new laptop). I will also see what Sonar offers, in terms of synths too. A lot has changed since I last used Sonar 6 Producer, and there are now a load more synths available. As per usual, my laptop sound card is sadly lacking, and I was advised to go with a Roland device called QUAD-CAPTURE, which will suit my needs, for now at least. I don't intend recording bands/drum kits any more... I don't have any photographs yet, and to be honest, there will not be much to see anyway, with much of my equipment being in the software domain. I've still got my Tannoy Active monitors, when I need to do some serious listening, but most of my work will be done using my old DT250's (I should really invest in something a bit more modern...). So, that's a written description of my studio. As soon as I get my new desk set up, I'll take some pictures and call back...

Ok, so here's a pic of part of my control room which is about 6 years out of date. I have since upgraded the monitor speakers and changed to 32 channels of m-Audio Octane preamps. The room behind the glass is my performance room which is about 20' by 14' and has it's own foundation. It works really well. The other day my daughter had party going on upstairs and I had band practice, and they had no idea there was a rock band playing full volume under the garage. :-) I have a big vocal booth to the left of my mix position, and a DAW "machine closet", all the cables go under the floor.
