[SOLVED] How Do I - Addictive Drums - output to separate audio tracks

Short summary of what I'm asking: how can I get separate audio tracks (one audio track per kit piece) from midi that I've recorded in Addictive Drums?

I've been using both Session Drummer 3 and external sound modules for drum sounds prior to X3.  I like Addictive Drums and am trying to accomplish what I have been able to accomplish previously softsynth-wise with Session Drummer 3.

I have a Roland TD-12 as my input controller, but I'm not using the sounds from the TD-12.

Addictive Drums comes with a nice mapping feature, when you click the help question mark in the top right corner, that allows you to select popular drum controllers.  So I found the TD-12, and mapped the inputs.

I prefer separate midi tracks for each kit piece so it's easier to edit.  After using the mapping, I now (as I did with Session Drummer 3) have a midi track for hi hat, snare, kick, toms, etc.  That's all working.

With Session Drummer 3, I could assign the output of each of the kit pieces to an output channel of sorts, and then I had an instrument track receiving each channel, so I had an instrument channel each for hi hat, snare, kick, toms, etc.  Then when I froze Session Drummer 3 I had the separate audio tracks ready for mixing separately balance-wise in the console, and available for the overall mixdown.

I've accomplished getting the separate midi tracks in Addictive Drums.  I originally inserted the Addictive Drums softsynth with include all output tracks, and so I have a bunch of instrument tracks. I tried setting the instrument track inputs according to the choices that came with that insert.  There are choices for hihat mono left, and a choice for snare mono left, and kick mono right, etc. as inputs.  The problem is, I can only get the kit piece sounds to get to instrument tracks if I choose the master stereo as input.  When I choose any of the specific inputs, like kick mono right, I don't hear anything in the instrument track.

Can anyone make a suggestion how I can get to separate audio tracks, per kit piece, from Addictive Drums?

(I know this is repeating some stuff you already figured out, OP.)
    There are two ways:
    1. When you insert the softsynth into your project, there's an option to select
    •    [ ] all synth audio outputs (stereo)
    •    [ ] all synth audio outputs (mono)
Selecting one of these options will add multiple "instrument" tracks to your project, along with a single MIDI driver track.

However: For addictive drums, this doesn't necessarily give you one output channel per kit piece. For "stereo" you get 8 channels, some grouped:
      Master
      Kick+Snare
      Hi-Hat+Xtra
      Tom1+Tom2
      Tom3+Tom4
      Overhead
      Room
      Bus

For "mono" you get 16 channels:
       Master L, Master R
       Kick
       Snare
       HiHat
       Xtra
       Tom1
       Tom2
       Tom3
       Tom4
       Overhead L, Overhead R
       Room L, Room R
       Bus L, Bus R

    2. Split your MIDI into separate tracks per kit piece, and solo them one by one, bouncing to tracks. That's more work, but if your drums are solid, you have ultimate flexibility with the audio. Best to turn off the built-in reverb FX if you're going this route, and apply FX per-track or bus to taste.

Why would you split the midi per kit piece?

Makes it far simpler (less clutter as well) for editing on a note by note basis, and velocities and timings are far more easily seen and edited as well as making it more efficient at soloing out individual kit instruments. JMO

I follow everything you mention - in fact that's how far I had achieved in my original post and question.

I'm trying to figure out how to be able to freeze/bounce the whole kit in one action and get all of the separate audio tracks from that one mouse click. I didn't make that clear in my original post.

I can do that in Session Drummer 3 because I see where you can assign pad outputs to a channel.

I'm trying to see if that's possible in Addictive Drums as well. The method you mentioned would take a lot more mouse clicks and a lot more effort, but yes I can see it would get the desired result.

Has anyone run across how to output separate audio tracks yet?

    joden +1

That's why I do it. Much easier to edit, solo, see, fix, substitute, transpose, etc when each piece is in its own midi line.

At the bottom of each channel in AD is an arrow with the word out just below it. That will output to a track directly.

John - thanks.  Yes, I think I had seen that before and tried it.

I'm trying that again right now.  I have it up and am looking at the Addictive Drums UI, and the sliders under each kit piece.  There's a button with a down arrow, and the word Out underneath it.  Clicking it does nothing but light up the down arrow.  There's no configuring any settings.  I'll try it now with the down arrow lit up  and see if I get any output on a freeze to the instrument track.

John - that was interesting - and worked!

In Addictive Drums, the output down arrow needs to be lit up when bouncing or freezing if you want that piece to print a separate audio/freeze track for the particular piece.

I set the down arrow (output) for the kick and snare pieces, and on a single freeze I received the audio for the snare on a snare instrument track, and the kick drum audio appeared a kick drum instrument track. (I had previously set up the two instrument tracks, each with inputs specific to either snare or kick).  So, this is exactly what I was aiming to accomplish.  Thanks John!

I had been interpreting it differently because in Session Drummer 3 under each kit piece you can essentially choose which channel number you want to assign for an output.  In Addictive Drums it's even easier, because you just turn it on or off if you want to output it as a separate piece, and then the instrument tracks for the softsynth already have as input choices the kit pieces identified, so you can choose the snare, or the kick, etc.  So all in all, now that I understand it, Addictive Drums seems very convenient to output separate kit pieces in separate audio tracks with one mouse click.  Very pleased!

I have a couple follow up questions related to Addictive Drums, and will post a separate question in the Techniques section of the forum.

I am so glad that was helpful. I didn't think it would be but I thought you and I were trying to do the same thing perhaps and that was to out each drum to its own Sonar track.
