[SOLVED] Saffire Pro 40 and ASUS Z87 Pro

Hey everyone, I'm REALLY in a jam with this.

Is anyone using a Saffire Pro 40 with an ASUS Z87 Pro MB? If so, could you please give me some insight on the issues I'm having
with my firewire card?? I looked on the Focusrite site and found their PDF on compatible FW cards. They recommend SIIG brand. I have installed 3 different FW cards they suggested and NONE of them are even recognized by my PC. They don't even show up in the device manager and the SIIG brand doesn't come with any driver software. If you go to SIIG's website looking for drivers...they say there are none because their drivers are already built into the Windows software. This is incredibly frustrating because with no FW, my Saffire Pro is dead in the water...and so is any chance of recording.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Mojo...

I don't know if this is the issue, but I had trouble with a couple of saffires and FireWire...

By any chance are you using a wireless network card? The only solution I found for the circumstance was to disable the wireless nic when the saffire was to be used....?

You might try that... I'm having trouble getting a Presonus AudioBox 1818VSL transferred to a laptop (it has been replaced with a Presonus StudioLive 24.4.2)... And I'm planning on trying that here today as well...

Just a thought... If your nit familiar with a simple disable all you need to do is:

    Go to control panel
    Open device manager
Locate the wireless card and click to disable it...

Simple enough to repat that procedure to enable it again when audio work is done...

    Hey Keni,

Thanks so much for the reply. Unfortunately, it's even worse than that. I tried your suggestion, but it didn't help. My PC won't even recognize that a firewire card has been installed. I have to believe that there is a relatively easy fix for this issue SOMEWHERE. But until I find it, I will be pulling my hair out. UGH!!!

    Thanks Keni.

    Hi,
have you tried all different Pci-E ports for the FW card?
    PCi or PCI-E?
checked in the bios if the PCi/E slots are enabled if possible?
Which other Pci(E) cards are installed?

I installed my LA CIE Pci Fw 400(TI chiipset) in the second PCI slot , counted from the floor!

    Hope this helps

Hey Pragi, unfortunately yes...I have looked in the bios to make sure they were all enabled and also tried multiple slots. Great suggestion though, I appreciate the help.

    Hi,
I also have a asus z 8 aso  mainboard here.
can you possibly answer the 2 unanswered question  above?
And yes, I know, it´s better to run a Pci-E fw card, but this La Cie works like crazy
    even as FW 400!!

    No need to be sorry,,
but this is strange, that you are using Pci-E cards,
which are recommended for all the new mb´s and they are not recognized by your system.......
Imo this seems to be a deadlock about the Pci or Pci-e format for your constellation.
I cannot answer the question , why your system doesn´t
    recognize your fw card, sorry.
Have you tried other devices on that pcie slot- is that  working?

Very strange indeed. I haven't tried any other devices because the cards themselves act as if they aren't even connected to the slots I've had them in. I have no other kind of card to try whether it be FW, USB or whatever. This is feeling pretty hopeless so far.

    Mojo,
to circle the problem it would be good, to try if the Pcie port´s are working.
Sure you are for some days now trying everything to start this......(sh........  ).

I don´t know if you have the po(i)ssibility to lend a pci-e card from a friend or so,
or you can try other things to male sure that the mb is not defect.

Sorry for asking so much questions but (and this again)
have you tried to expand-disable all network- ,lan and usb devices and fw card at one point and
starting your system without all that and then
implemented the fw card and started the system?
    I guess yes!

This appears more a motherboard compatibility with the firewire card than a Focusrite compatibility with the firewire card I assume? If you can't get the firewire card working there's no chance in hell you are going to get the saffire working.

Here are firmware updates and chipset drivers, latest firmware was released 3 weeks ago:

After this please check in with Intel autoupdate:

    Then try different slots...

What is the exact model of the SIIG firewire card?

    Hey Alex,

Thanks so much for the links. I will definitely try them. You're absolutely right....it's definitely a MB issue not a Saffire issue.
The SIG card was the SIIG (NN-E20012-S2) 2-Port.

So post #16 should sort out the motherboard chipset drivers and you need to be updated to the latest BIOS version.

No need to install drivers for the interface, however please run windows update several times when the card is inserted.

That should be all you need to do, you might need to check the settings in the BIOS afterwards but only as a last resort.

    Cheers

Sorry Les, I must have missed this from you earlier. I haven't tried turning off the plug and play, but I can tell you that NOTHING appears in the device manager for a firewire device at all. That's why this is so frustrating...if it was showing up with an exclamation mark, I could probably figure out what to do to get it working. But it doesn't even list a FW device as ever being installed. When the Saffire Pro is connected and powered on, if I start the control software for it - it just comes up saying that "No device is connected".

if you installed a new Z87 mobo why didn't u get a version with firewire on the board?  i put a Saffire pro 24 with my Z77 mobo and no issues.  unless there's something with the new Z87 drivers not talking with the firewire hdwe???

I honestly didn't know that I could. I didn't see that as an option to buy when I was looking. That would have been the way to go had I known.....that is...if it's even an option.

    Hi,
have you tried all different Pci-E ports for the FW card?
    PCi or PCI-E?
checked in the bios if the PCi/E slots are enabled if possible?
Which other Pci(E) cards are installed?

I installed my LA CIE Pci Fw 400(TI chiipset) in the second PCI slot , counted from the floor!

    Hope this helps

+1 for Lacie. I use a Focusrite LS 56 now (originally bought the card for a Presonus FS 26x26, which is now retired with leaking capacitors) and with the Lacie 400 card it worked out of the box.

    Cheers,
    J
