SONAR Plus Skin Editor Released!

SONAR Plus Skin Editor is now available for download:

http://www.sonarplus.co.uk/pages/downloads.aspx

Important

The Skin Editor is not officially endorsed by, or supported by Cakewalk. Cakewalk may not support your copy of SONAR if you have modified it using the Skin Editor.

I strongly recommend reading the following document before you install it. It contains important information, including installation instructions.

SONAR Plus Skin Editor Beta 1 Read Me (PDF)

Many thanks to Panu Pentikäinen for his assistance, and for hosting the Skin Editor forum

What does it do?

If you've ever wanted to customize the appearance of (or 'skin') SONAR X1, now's your chance! If you want to make a small change to a single button, or change the appearance of the entire program, SONAR Plus Skin Editor is the tool to use.

Here's a ridiculous Control Bar skin I created to show what it can do:

Here are a couple of screenshots:

I've tried to keep it as user friendly as possible, so that just about anyone can use it. Here's a quick run through of how it works:

1. The first time you run the Skin Editor, it asks you which image editing application you want to edit skin images with. You can use anything that handles PNG and BMP images, and image transparency. It's so far been tested with Photoshop Elements, Adobe Fireworks, Photoshop 7.0, CS5  and GIMP. No problems are anticipated with other popular image editing applications. Don't use Windows Paint (it doesn't handle image transparencies)!

2. When the Skin Editor opens, you see a list of 'skinnable' SONAR user interface items on the left. Browse to the image you want to change, select it, and then click the 'Edit' button on the toolbar.

3. The Skin Editor will open the image in your chosen image editing application. Make any changes you want, and then save (overwrite the existing file, don't save a new one).

4. Back in the Skin Editor, click the 'Apply' button in the toolbar. That's it! You've just skinned SONAR X1. Run X1 and you will see the changes straight away.

5. Don't like how it looks? Click the 'Restore' button at any time to restore SONAR to its default appearance.

6. You can save the skin for later by clicking the 'Save' button on the toolbar. Skins are saved with the file extension .ssk. You can keep as many skin files as you like, and switch between them at any time.

7. To share a skin, post the .ssk file on the SONAR Plus Skin Editor forum.

Be creative, get sharing, and enjoy!

Hmmm...

I just realized... I'm gonna have a hard time with this. I have no graphics programs on my DAW as I do my graphics work on this machine (the one I do my browsing on as well)....

We'll see how this goes... they are networked.....  ;-)

If you need a pretty powerful tool for free, check out Paint.net or GIMP. That way you wont have to move from machine to machine.

You could always share your SONAR folder (the folder where SONARPDR.exe and TTSRES90.dll live), then map a drive to it on your image editing PC. The share would need read/write priveledges of course. That should do the trick.

for some reason my winraw will not let me copy those 14 files to the folder i made(c/programfiles/benstat/sonar skin editor.)
i know its something im doing wrong..but i cant do it.
the only thing it will let me do is "extract here"  then it turns them in to 4 files.
i can copy thosefour, but it doesnt work for me.

You're using windows 7. Do you see the 'Extract All...' option in the popup menu when you right click the zip file? If so, use that. I'm afraid I don't know much about WinRar. There are roughly 15 files in the zip file, and the Skin Editor needs all of them to work. I've no idea why WinRar won't extract them all. I've tested the downloads myself and they extract fine here with the built-in Win7 method. You could try WinZip - it's free (www.winzip.com). HTH

ben thank you for replying sir..yes it will extract them no problem..and i do see the 14 files..but for some reason it wont let me copy them..there has got to be a way and im hoping someone who uses winraw will ansewr this for me.
if i hit extract here..it turns those 14 files in to 4 files..on being the sonarplus skineditor(it has the sonar pus icon)
ive tryed putting those 4 in the selected forder..but it wont work..lik i said,,i think im missing something here..this is a great program you have created and hopfully i will figure out how to use it so i can learn it as soon as possible and i can help out with any questions people may have..that is my intention..thank you for making this program for us..its awesome..youve done a great job.

still trying to find a way to copy those files.like i said no problems unzipping them.
just copying them once they are unzipped.it just cant find the option,if i could then i can just copy all of them and paste them in to the c/prog files/benstat/skin editor file i made.
the only options it is giving me is
extract files
extract files here
extract to sonar skin editor(but it wont let me do that.
just waiting for someone else to do it so they can show me how.
thank you.

Re:SONAR Plus Skin Editor Released! 2011/05/13 16:37:13 (permalink)
Why on earth do you want to copy them ????

Just unrar (you need a spell checker) them into the folder you want.

You can create a folder within winrar. Select Extract > then winrar will "suggest" where its wants to install the files > Simply overwrite that suggestion by clicking on it and inputing your path > click OK or whatever and there you go.

Dare I say it : RTM (without the F word)    ;-))))

Cheers,
Jerry

When you've managed to extract all the files to anywhere on your PC using Winrar, you no longer need Winrar any more. Close Winrar now - you don't need it any more.

Now just copy and paste the extracted files using plain ol' Windows Explorer. Select/highlight the 14 files using the mouse, then cut n' paste them from one folder to another in Windows Explorer. Same way you copy and paste any other file (or files) from one place to another in Windows.

I hope that helps? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem?

Hi benstat...

OK... I've got it installed on my DAW with it pointing to Photoshop 7 on this machine (my graphics WS (GWS?))...

I first uninstalled Panup's Mod that I use...

Then ran and setup Skinner...

Now I'd like to re-install Panup's mod and then edit from there... Is that a can do?

ben..those files you see under the error...i cant copy them..there is no way to.trust me ive been trying for a day now...i know what you mean...i do know what your talking about..winraw..wont let me. ..the error is...when i click extract to folder-c/programfiles/benstat/sonar plaus skin editor
At first I thought you must have had a corrupt download. I'm not sure what you're selecting when you right click the *zip file. Or are you just left double clicking it? Sounds like you maybe don't have the right permissions set and may need to run WinRar as administrator. In which case you need to find Win Rar and right click the program icon and under Compatability select always run as Admin.
then copy the whole *zip file to your Benstat folder.
Right click and select extract to the suggested folder which will be the same name as the *.zip file.
This will create a new folder with the same name as the zip file with all your extracted files inside.
then find the file inside the folder that ends with exe and right click drag to your desktop and select Create shortcut. All done. Double click it to run the Skin Editor.

If I wasn't using WinRar I couldn't have been that specific. Your screen capture doesn't show the files extracted it shows errors. And its not a window from which you can copy files. You need to correct whatever's causing the errors first.

And yes I have read all your posts.

My copy of Skin editor works prefectly. What I told you to dopoint by point was based on having read all your posts and going to the trouble of downloading it and installing skin editor so I could help you out.

Perhaps I shouldn't have bothered.  We're clearly not communicating well. I'm out of here.

Paint.net

Thanks... I just downloaded and tried both with no luck...

They both install and work fine, but I get an assortment of error messages (different for each) when I try to use Skinner to open the pic in the editor...
