Samplers in Sonar and usage of same ...

Hi guys,

It seems where samplers are concerned in Sonar X series one has - Dimension Pro, Cyclone, Dropzone.

When one is looking around for tutes and info on these it seems pretty sparce. A sampler that keeps scoring high marks elsewhere is the ABLETON SAMPLER. Are any of the samplers in Sonar anywhere near either Ableton Sampler Or NI Kontakt? Is Dimension Pro a good sampler for sound design?

Are Cyclone or Dropzone any use?

The topic of usage of Samplers seems to be thin on the ground within the Sonar Community? Maybe i am wrong?

Sonar has nothing like Kontakt.  Nothing like Ableton either.  Dimension Pro is a rompler (a sample playing synth with decent sample editing abilities) but not what one would call a proper sampler.  It can import samples and map rex files across keyboard. Dropzone is like a lighter version of dimension pro but easier to import samples. Still not a proper sampler.  Cyclone is more of a sample manipulator/mangler that theoretically would be good for jungle breaks.

Thanks Dubdisciple,

Its obviously something that Sonar needs so? A decent sampler.

I have tried Dimension pro, Dropzone and Cyclone now. Was looking for a simple thing - to reverse an imported sample - not possible.

Looks like for the moment the only way is external VSTs like Kontakt or Nuance or Sampletank??

Considering Sonar comes loaded with efx, that should not be that big of an obstacle. i have wanted to use that sampler but it always crashes on me :(

Here's  one method.  For an imported sample, you'd have to create an .sfz (text) file first, with a <region> pointing to the sample file name.

Thanks b rock,

I have been having success with BUT as Dubdisciple says it keeps crashing Sonar with mem violation errors etc.

However - good news Dubdisciple and all - The new beta version sorts this. No crashes so far:

the sampler with ableton, is an extra IRC and not included unless you pay extra.. same goes with Exs if they still make that for logic.

Been using TX16Wx sampler for the last few days now .. Especially the BETA. Working fine with Sonar X2 Producer - no problems.

in fact, for my needs I find the FREE version more than adequate.

Fog..I always assumed Ex was included with Logic since I have never seen an install without it.  Learn something new every day.

aidanodr- this beta is much more stable than the previous releases.  I have created multi-output layered drum kits with no crashes .  it even handled some old soundfont drumkits I tossed on it for kicks.

It's sad that EMU is a shell of it's glory days.  Best filters of any sampler I ever used

Elsewhere can not mean Earth.  When you have Kontakt, you don't even waste time with Live's sampler unless you need it for it's proprietary sounds.  The only decent sampler incorporated into a DAW was Logic.  I would think with the samplers out there making a great sampler in a DAW is a waste of resources.

I plumped for KOMPLETE 9. As I had absynth and Reaktor already they gave me a crossgrade in the Black Friday sale. So I got KOMPLETE 9 for amazing price - €167.
This means i now get Kontakt as my sampler :D

Sure does. Couldnt pass that offer by. Normal price to crossgrade about €500. Plus this is the boxed version shipped for that €167 price.

I also ( As i have X3 now too ) upgraded the Z3TA Synth to v2 - What a synth that is.

Again its on offer:

store.cakewalk.com/b2ceuro/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=10-cwz32.00-20E

Upgrade for Black Friday/Cyber monday princely sum of €24.50  // Full ver knocked down to €49.50. ( Half Price )

Gets my recommend :D

And so my Black Friday knock down priced ( €167 crossgrade from Reaktor that I had previously ) KOMPLETE 9 arrived via UPS today.

Wow, its some behemoth - 12 DVDs of installation. Takes a few hours to complete. Not for small harddrives ( I have 2 x 1 terabyte drives .. luckily :D )

So Kontakt and a pile of other audio goodness, here I come :D
