Well... hmmmm. Great playing. But, The Frank of Christmas Past has risen from the dead. You need to dial the bass back a wee bit. A lot actually, heh heh. And while I understand the desire to showcase Danny's skill (which is awesome by the way), I think you also need to dial the drums back a bit too. And I think we are a bit over compressed.

Bass mix... maybe... but I'm not hearin' it... no compression was applied on my end, to Danny's drum mix... I'll listen again tomorrow after I get my critical ears back... Thanks for the feedback Shad...

Awesome performance and personally I like the mix the way it is. Keeps things interesting and your ears bouncing all over the place (excellent separation BTW). There is one thing... and I'm no pro but the overall sound has a slight "hollow" quality. Not sure how exactly to describe it. I might just be the way Soundcloud processed the file. I am however listening on my crummy computer speakers but generally they give me a good idea of what's happening with a tune. So much so that I'm intending on using them to A/B next to my monitors when I mix. Just a thought because you guys should consider releasing this. I bet you could make some good cash. Cheers

Not my cuppa ... both the stereotypical 'night band' style and the Xmas funk I eschew. That said, this may have a place on grandiose late shows and other party fests. I love many of your excellent offerings ... just not this.

No compression eh? Not even on the master? It just seemed really loud and even to me.

I used some compression on my sub-mix without drums... and then blended that with Danny's drum mix... that's all... Danny will hopefully fill us in on what he did with his kit... I must say the Drum Mix Danny sent me, sounded World Class... Shad, what do you think of the latest version with vocals... I filtered out some of the sub-freqs on that bass mix... I know you sometimes use a subwoofer... Thanks again...

Frank, I will confess to you that by the end of my listening session on the forum last night, I was becoming less confident of what I was hearing, as everything seemed off. Either something has changed on my rig or my hearing was wonky. As far as it goes, I like the "Danny's Trap" version better. It was warmer.

Frank, thanks again for the chance to jam with you on this. I had an absolute blast. :) Yeah, real kit played completely in real time with D-Drum triggers on the kit as a safety net...so there was a little hybrid-ding going on. The kick drum being the most obvious as the real one just wasn't blowing my doors off the way I wanted it to and I didn't have the time to really get it right...so I used a one of my custom Drumagog samples along with it to just give it a little more beater and thump at 50%. Most of the samples are mixed in at about 25% and tuned to the real kit to prevent weird-ness. Nothing is quantized or edited. When I screwed up, I punched in until I got it right. Slight compression on the kick and snare to keep things tight...very light Fairchild on the drum bus and a little parallel compression using the 4k bus comp in Sonar. Personally, I think you did good on this mix Frank. I didn't hear the stuff Shad had mentioned. Bass seemed tight, drums were at the right level to my ears (considering you never let me hear this new mix without the vocals, you didn't need me anyway lol) and I didn't hear any over-compression going on. It's definitely loud though, but I didn't hear any artifacts from the volume. I like the vocal mix version a bit better I guess because that's the one I played on and am used to. The drums seem lower than I'd mix them in that version, but everything else seems spot on. Great job no matter what. I'm just stoked to have played on it, I don't get a chance to play drums in that style as often as I'd like, so it was a nice challenge for me. I got freakin' blisters all over my hands from that still! Well worth it though, thanks again Frank and to everyone else for the listens and kind words. :) -Danny

Whoa.. Nice job guys. Great drumming Danny. How the hell do you punch in drums while sitting on the throne? I have images of lots of running and cymbals falling over and tripping over cables etc..... I do think the drums are kind of lost in the mix (quiet). If'n it was me, I'd have em all up in yo face..

Thanks Tim! I use Tranzport and try not to punch in where a crash or ride may be so it doesn't get weird sounding. You can usually get away with it when hats are there though. If it's a section where I just can't punch in due to a crash or ride resonating, I sometimes just punch the kick, snare or toms in or punch-in the full kit anyway and just replace the crash or ride with another from the song if I need to. It depends on what I'm faced with and where the mistake is though. Even when I've had to do something nutty where a crash or ride from an old take may be still there, cross fading/slip editing really tight can work wonders. Punching-in with tape was a nightmare. Sometimes I got lucky, most times I failed and had to either re-do the entire song or come in from a stop part or something IF one existed. I so don't miss those days. Anyway, glad you liked it. Thanks so much again! :) Thanks for the comments and listens everyone. :) -Danny
