Setting up Korg Nanokontrol in X3
I picked up one of these controllers off a Musician's Friend stupid deal of the day, last week. I have it all programmed except I can't figure out how to program one of the 6 global buttons for "undo". Undo is not an option in the list of stock functions. The available stock functions include Play, Stop, Forward, Record, etc but not Undo. The Korg is set as a "Cakewalk Generic Surface" (the only way I could get it to connect). I also had to use the Windows "plug and play" driver. With the Korg driver, Sonar does not detect the unit. The 6th global button is currently set (default I guess as I haven't set it) to control channel 1's volume (either full on or full off with the button). I would like to set this as "Undo". ??? Thanks/Jack

Jack, You have more patience than I! I got one the same way a year and a half ago and only had it out of its box twice. I am not sure if the Cakewalk General Surface has that option (I hope someone else can chime in). I just opened that setup window and do not see what is available in the ACT control surface. I had tried to set mine up as an ACT controller. When you are in the controller setup box, there is an "options" tab at the top. On that tab, in the "Buttons" line, the far right box has a huge list of commands. The "undo" is listed in there as "Edit|Undo" I am not savvy with using surfaces at all, so please take this with a grain of salt.

MSR, I used that link to set up the NanoKontroller, to the point I'm at now, but that example used Sonar 7 and there is a lot of difference between Sonar 7 and Sonar X3. I looked at the ACT Controller setup but its not as straightforward as the Cakewalk General Surface setup (which works for everything except being able to assign a global button to "undo").

You might find this article helpful. I couldn't get Sonar to recognize the NanoControl until I deleted the excess MIDI ports that kept getting added without my knowing it. There were some other issues as well...I'm on the road so can't confirm, but I think the solution was using the NanoControl as a Mackie-compatible controller.

My Korg Nanokontrol shows up in the Device Manager. And, as noted it works for everything except being able to set one global button for what I want (undo). I can set that button from the stock list of functions in Sonar X3, but the stock list does not include undo. BTW, all you have to do is click show hidden devices from the View drop down menu in the Device Manager and it does what Craig's batch file does. I can't attach the screen shot, on this forum, to show what I've done. I've tried both Firefox and I.E.11 (and I.E. 11 in compatibility mode) but when I select the option to insert a picture the option it won't let me do it. I can attach screen shots in other forums, so its an issue with this forum. EDIT/Added: I failed to mention that the Nanokontrol shows up (and status working OK) with both the generic Windows/Microsoft installed driver and the Korg supplied driver. However, Sonar X3 only recognizes the Nanokontrol with the generic Windows/Microsoft driver.

While I agree that you should be able to attach images images to this forum and there would be a a variety of benefits to do so - it is something that has never been an option. Currently images must be web accessible so that means placing them on your own web server or a public image hosting site. Here are some links with related info: How do I attach a Screenshot? Got to use the little Nanokontrol last evening during some comparison testing. The Left/Right Pan control came in handy. I bought some new studio monitors (JBL LSR308) and was doing a comparison between the new JBL and my old studio monitors, Samson Resolv 6.5a. I hooked up one of the new JBL's to the Left side and the old Samson on the Right side. Much easier to pan with the rotary control than doing it with a mouse. BTW, the JBL LSR308's are keepers. I thought the Samson's were good but the overall response is much clearer and the bass more distinct. I have been having to guess at the low end (bass) when mixing with the Samson's, I shouldn't have to do it with the JBL's and the reason I went with the 8" speakers over the model with 5" speakers.

The undo function is assignable when assigned to a button via the act control surface. Generic surface does not expose it.

Is it possible to assign the faders/panners for busses instead of tracks? I just can't do it.

Where on my computer is the Control Surface files/data stored? Update:Found it - not that it does me any good. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\ControlSurfaces\Presets\{404C9315-693D-4715-A326-143A992FA784} Was hoping that there was a way to edit the data and avoid having to repeat the track parameter setup 40 times.

msr I don't have X3, but I know this worked in X2. http://www.untidymusic.com/wordpress/using-sonar/setting-up-nanokontrol-sonar You may need to "learn" the undo command. Although I'm not sure if that is possible. msr
Using X3c, Window 7 x64. Following the instructions I was able to use the "Cakewalk Generic Surface" to control track level (fader), panning, mute & solo. Though not documented in the link you can also use the "Cakewalk Generic Surface" to map the Nano's play, stop, record, forward & rewind buttons - just select the appropriate radio button in Global Parameters (bottom right of the Control/Surface Property window) click & hold down the Learn button then hit the appropriate button on the NanoKontrol panel. I was not able to get the ACT MIDI Controller to work at all or contribute any additional functionality.

I have the Play/Record/Stop, buttons programmed using the Global options. I'm not much on MIDI so I don't know how I would manipulate the MIDI for that one global button. I set the Nanokontroller up as an ACT device but I have no idea what to do and even with the built in definitions for what looks like a Nanokontroller it doesn't work at all. Back to the Cakewalk Generic Surface as it is the only one that I can get working - everything except the one parameter I want.
