TRS is Tip Ring Shield. That a cable with 1/4" phone plugs on each end. TRS plugs have 2 plastic rings around the plug, one for the signal to the tip of the plug and one for the signal to the ring. Its basically a stereo cable, but when used in a TRS jack its called a balanced cable and it provides a higher quality signal than an unbalanced cable which has mono phone plugs on each end.

To the original poster:

The way this works for your interface is that you are with that setting only getting half of the available signal to your output jacks.  This is due to the 'mix' level being set at half.  I would recommend you consider setting the Mix knob all the way to the right.  That position should have a label of PB (according to the doc), and this is what they recommend for Play Back (PB).  Making that change should significantly boost your output signal, and will contain whatever Windows or Sonar is sending to the interface (includes mics and instruments plugged in to your interface too, as long as you have them routed through Sonar or Windows).

If you try to do direct monitoring in addition to monitoring the sound output from Sonar, you will hear an annoying delay.  By switching the Mix to 100% Sonar/Windows, you will eliminate that delay.

In any case, best of all to your efforts - I hope you are making progress with it all.  Once you get it all working, it should remain hopefully stable for you, giving you opportunities to find other things to break. :)

So now I am able to hear my guitar loud and clear through my speakers and get the sound to register in sonar, but how do I listen to what I've recorded in Sonar with the track output being set as fasttrack line 1 out? I'm guessing the master output isn't fasttrack pro seeing as how I can monitor it but not hear it once recorded. Wouldn't I need to select a new out (master?) somewhere to hear both what I've recorded using the interface and any tracks I've added in Sonar (not using interface)?

You would route the guitar track output to the Master Bus, and the Master Bus would send its output to the audio interface.
