Your Audio bit depth should be 16 bit, the sampling rate set to 44100. Higher resolution is not recommended unless you are recording for DVD audio. decrease your buffers in queue to 2 this should allow you to reduce the latency to 10 ms using MME drivers.

Problem- I'm recording guitar on a previously recorded drum track and when I play it back, the guitars are at a faster tempo than I recorded them. No adjustments to tempo were made .

Problem- I'm recording and suddenly the whole thing slows and becomes choppy

Problem- I'm recording and regardless of what I set the buffers to, it drops.

Here's the meat of it all

Intel Q6600 Quad Core @2.4Ghz
2 Gb DDRAM
Windows XP Pro SP3
Creative SB Audigy Live! 24 bit

The drum tracks were made years ago on Guitar Tracks 2. Do I need to give further info on the operating environment?

Ok I did some checking into your past posts since everything is scattered around. I noted you are running XP with SP3. SP3 has been known to create all kinds of issues and problems depending on the system. All you need to do is a search in this forum on SP3 and you will find a large percentage of users that have had issues and problems. Some more questions for you.

When did the problems start? Was GTP3 running before without issues? Have you optimized the system using one of the online line guides for DAW optimization? Can you provide me that list of processes that is running and what application you have running other than GTP3 when you record?

I'll take a screen grab cos I don't feel like typing that much bouncing between windows. I don't seem to be able to post it in line here so I may hafta email it or sumpin.
CWGTP3 ran fine, even after SP3
DAW?
It ran fine till about a month ago

The window can't be made big enough to show all processes. I've gone through the list and everything is legit, printer stuff, superdrive stuff, game related stuff, security program stuff. As far as what happened a month ago I can't trace back to any particulrly significant actions.

RE: Setting up your SB Audigy Live! 2008/11/19 14:11:03 (permalink)
Kain, that's not it at all. The processes take up CPU cycles and RAM which interfere in the recording program. Several of them need to be ended to make room for the recording. Think of it this way. Your CPU and RAM as a glass. Each program is an ounce of water. Processes are small programs that run in the background (Way back in the days of DOS we used to call them TSR programs -terminate and stay resident) and take up valuable memory. So if you have a 60 ounce glass and 52 ounces are taken up by processes you only have 8 ounces to run GTP3. and if GTP3 requires 10 ounces to run what do you do to accomodate the extra 2 ounces. Well you have to use another glass. In a computer that other glass is your hard drive ( the specific term is called a swap file), and it takes more time to read and write to your hard drive than it does to RAM. as it is like carefully pouring the top 8 ounces of water back and forth between the glasses.

So to run more efficiently you have to make room for the GTP3 to run properly. Get rid of the unnecessary processes when you record. Like the ones associated with automatic updates, printer related processes, game related processes. I would suggest getting PCs for Dummies and Home Recording for Dummies to outline the basic processes of how a Microsoft based PC works and why and hows of PC recording.

Peace out

That's still the big pickle here, I haven't added anything to the mix, CWGTP3 just decided to start being picky about some yet to be discovered issue. I had reduced the number of TSR type programs already and it worked briefly, it would record for a couple minutes before it started lagging. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling CWGTP3 several times and it always reverts to this issue. I've tried a system restore to a time when I knew for certain it was still working. Cakewalk support certainly isn't, with their DO NOT REPLY emails that don't adress anything I haven't tried already.

Kain, why not try searching back through your system restore history - there might be something you thought innocuous at the time that may now stand out like a sore thumb from about a month ago.

There's probably a much better way to search through what's been changed to your system Kain - maybe someone else can show us both how to do it.

Here's how to find System Restore though:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Open it up and click on 'Show restore points older than 5 days' - depending on how it's set, you may see what changes were made to your Registry at the time GT3 started playing up.

Just to chime in here guys - when a computer starts to behave more sluggish than usual it could be time to check for spyware.

I have 5 programs that watch, I can say with great confidence I have no malware running, but thanks for the tip tho.

Mate - I work with this stuff all day and I'm not that confident!!

OK - Next thing I'd take a look at is Windows Task Manager.

Click on the Process Tab and you can see if there's anything gobbling up your CPU or Mem Usage (tip - clicking on the column header lists processes by that column)

There's also a performance graph in the Performance tab that shows you how the system is, well, performing - lots of other info there too.

There's somewhere else you can look for what may be using resources - try typing msinfo32 in the run command. That'll bring up System Information.

Expand "Software Environment" and click on "Running Tasks". Everything you see there is running on your computer.

Who knows - maybe something will jump out at you?

Yeah but there's a lot of stuff in there that can start chewing up resources if and when they feel like it.

I notice you're a "gamer" - for example "steam.exe", that doesn't need to be running - anything that is running can potentially use up resources, maybe not now but sooner or later.

Try running Task Manager while you use Cakewalk and see if anything starts using CPU or memory when you hit a problem?

When it bogs, the System Idle is at 99%. Sometimes the Dr Watson app is up in the 50's, but not often.

System Idle is good when its high.

Sounds like the computer is creating a Dr Watson entry - which means there's a problem somewhere

Have a look in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\drwtsn32.log - it'll be a big file. Check out the latest entries at the bottom of the file. Maybe you'll get a clue to what's conflicting.

Don't paste a copy of the whole file here - it'll be huge and I can't decode it anyway.

Dr Watson only sticks his head out when there's a proper crash, he's not on when CWGTP3 is slugging along. My whole machine drags bad when system idle is high so why it's good I'm not understanding. When I run Hammer (world creating program for the Half Life 2 series) it bogs down because of the large scale processing it does when compiling maps, and the system idle pegs at 99%. Personally I'm thinking it's Microshaft trying to annoy the XP user in hopes of selling us Vista

A high system idle means that the CPU is not overly being taxed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Idle_Process

You could try the System Configuration Utility to do a selective startup on your PC.

In effect you can tell the system NOT to run certain programs at startup - by process of elimination you could find the culprit.

Type msconfig in the run dialogue and take it from there.

When I had my old Audigy, I had to uninstall all their extra BS that came with their driver, I found just the WDM driver on Creative labs support site. It sure helped out alot.

RE: Setting up your SB Audigy Live! 2008/11/19 22:11:24 (permalink)
That is very unusual behavior.
As Bill said, it's good for system idle to be high. That shows how much of your system is standing by, waiting for something to do.
System idle is not using resources, but showing unused resources.
And that's where it looks strange. It would appear that your system is not "bogging down" from too many processes, it just isn't processing anything, or very little.
When you are doing large scale processing, system idle should drop very low, and the process that is running should show a high percentage.
Even then, you should see spikes and valleys in the performance graph. A hung process can take the CPU to 100%, and if that lasts long enough, plan on a crash, or lock-up.
What you are describing is the exact opposite of what one might expect.
What happened a month ago? Thunderstorms, power surges or outages?
Overheating? Can you monitor temperatures and voltage on your motherboard/CPU? You may have a utility for this.
Chipset drivers installed and up to date? Adequate PSU? Dust clogging cooling fins?
Do you leave the computer on and allow it to go into sleep mode?
That machine shouldn't even flinch running GTP3, even running lots of effects.

When it's bogging the system idle shows high. If the system is actually idling the system idle shows very low. It used to not flinch running CWGTP3 with reverb etc... 700W modular PS. 4 fans on case (2 in 2 out) one on the CPU plus the PS fans. Little if any dust.
