What would be cool is a multi-cross platform book with tips on how to achieve similar results in Sonar, Cubase and Studio One. This would help people that are staying with Sonar and others looking to switch. I think a lot of users will be utilizing multiple DAW's, not wanting to get caught with all their eggs in one basket. Call it "The Big Switch Tips Book".

I will continue to use SPLAT for as long as it runs in my machine. I just don't want to take the time for new learning curves. It would be nice to have that last capstone guide from you.

Bittersweet, (mostly bitter) but I'd say give Sonar one last kiss goodbye by putting a capstone on your long legacy of fine work with Sonar.

Go for it!

I would certainly love to have a compilation of the recent tips (I had the first book, and I bought the EQ book when it became available on Reverb). But having said that, I realize we have a limited community of users (that will be shrinking rather than growing), so, if you're inclined to put this book together, I guess now would be the time to do something with it.

And aside from that, thanks for all you have already done and continue to do.

I'd do the same thing as the previous book (update, categorize, list the contents, fixx the typoze, etc.).

Rather than a second pdf, would it make more sense to include the new material in an expanded second edition of the first document?

T'would be nice if you did it, Craig.

Sorry if I missed it, but what would be the cost?

I think Scook has a good idea.  I now have Cubase Pro 9.5, so if you have crossover ideas for SO3, then Cubase users would paint the town green.

Thanks Craig.

Hi Craig,
Maybe this is a crazy idea, but what about a book indexed off of how to do a particular task (or maybe tips?) in different DAWs (rather than a book that is specific to one DAW)? It would probably be on heck of a maintenence job with updates, but hey, that sounds like more editions and $$$ for your work. If you are already familiar with a number of DAWs, the job might be a bit less daunting.
Dumb idea, maybe, sorta????

opps - I see someone already mentioned this - hey it's not so crazy after all

I'd focus on that collaboration you mentioned with Presonus and do a big book of tips for Studio One instead Craig:) Growing market there.

Its been a great 25 years but it's time I moved on.

Wishing you only the best Craig, and I'll see you on the other side!

I was thinking the same thing, a book for Sonar users transitioning to Studio One.

Absolutely!

At this point you're like that ancient scribe chipping away at the Rosetta Stone, without which Egyptian hieroglyphs would likely still be indecipherable to this day. SONAR will continue on long after the elders have gone and taken their knowledge with them. (My prediction: it's eventually going to be unlocked, after which it will effectively fall into the public domain. It will then become the leading free DAW in the world, a favorite among young producers with more ambition than cash. At that time the great CW documentation will be their bible, and your collection the new testament.)

OK, so maybe you won't be the subject of study two thousand years from now. But for another decade, anyway. Go for it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Most folks here in the SONAR forum seem to be saying "yes, I'd buy it," but the minority who have said "don't bother writing a book about SONAR, I'm moving on" probably speak for a larger group of real-world musicians, hobbyists and professional studio types. I intend to keep SONAR running on my production machine as long as practical, but what education budget I have (not much ) will have to go to learn the new DAW, whatever that turns out to be. Craig, your input here and over the decades has been invaluable, but if you are asking, I say add a few SONAR tips when the mood strikes on your own website, and focus your future publishing work on your music and on software that is still "alive."

Good analogy.
And if SONAR should end up in the public domain, probably some super-geek (with access to AI) will reverse engineer it and there will be new versions and features, a la Linux or Libre Office.

I would say yes, because I plan to keep Sonar running for as long as I can, but mostly for the projects I have already saved as Sonar files.

I will most likely not bother exporting most things over to a new DAW, however anything new that I start will be in a new DAW.

It seems that a very popular DAW for many Sonar users to move on with is Studio One.

I'm testing the S1 demo now and I like it.  So considering that you have experience with S1, it would be an investment in the future if you would document tips for that as well.  Maybe even with a section covering Sonar crossover tips and how to do familiar Sonar things easily in Studio One!

DAW: CbB; Sonar Platinum, and others ...

Wow, lots of great suggestions and ideas here. Some thoughts...

Second book: I know it would have a much smaller audience. I'm really quite devastated that SONAR has reached the "official" end of the line, it was the perfect program for me...a second book would be more like a labor of love, and give me closure.

Combining first and second books: That was my initial thought, but it's not as simple as it sounds. Doing the second book by itself would be fastest/easiest. Integrating the two books,  in particular  redoing the layout (very time-consuming), would be a major time sink. I also wouldn't want people to have to pay for the same material twice if they already bought the first book.

Removing the posts for the first book: There was so much out-of-date material and it was so disorganized I saw no way to turn the thread itself into something coherent, and I also didn't want my name associated with something sub-standard. It was like when Windows gets so messed up your only option is a re-install.

Studio One: Since so many of you mentioned Studio One, here's an update on what's happening on that front.

  • I will definitely be doing a "Friday's Tip of the Week" for Studio One, PreSonus wants it. Not sure when the first one will hit.
  • They're having an internal discussion around the feasibility of adding a "switchers" section for the people who are switching to Studio One (it's not just Sonarians). If it happens, they'll probably want me involved on some level. Note that they already have an official thread for Sonar users who are moving to Studio One.
  • PreSonus really liked the "Mixing and Mastering with SONAR" book I did many years ago, and wants me to do one on SOP.
  • There's a good chance the Anderton Synthetic Impulse Responses will be made available in the PreSonus shop for Studio One's Open Air convolution reverb.
  • I'm porting the Bass Expansion Pack to the Presence XT sampler. PreSonus agreed that it would be cool to offer the pack free to anyone who bought the original one for Rapture Pro so they don't have to buy the same thing twice.
Unused or hard to find content: I'll likely be putting some of the content that never appeared, like the Chord Library, loop libraries that were never used, and the Test Tone Suite on reverb.com. I also have some Rapture Pro Expansion packs that were never released. The only issue is that the installation process for Rapture Pro expansion packs is so squirrely that I don't think I could charge for them...if it doesn't work and it's free, no one can get too upset. What I'll probably do is offer at least one of them as a free download at craiganderton.com and if people like it, they can pay me what they think it's worth...or not. I just don't want to see all that work go to waste.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

Since I use Cubase, Sonar, and Studio One as needed (and Sonar will continue to need DSD capabilities), you can write books about what you want, and work for Presonus or Steinberg, or all, I can always use it.
Of course I have to learn the publication somehow.

As long as Presonus does not have any surround capabilities and no chord tracks, Cubase will stay in the game as well. No, I think I will never commit to a single DAW. Definitely I will never do that.
I have just seen what you can do with Dorico 1.2, definitely I will use Notion 6 from Presonus as well as Dorico, as needed.

a "switchers" section for the people who are switching to Studio One (it's not just Sonarians).

That would be welcome.

I have S1/3 and three attempts to complete a project were abandoned in frustration (vacation coming to an end and little to show for it).

Partly because of lack of completeness (S1 still has some way to go).

But part is not knowing same features are under different names or combinations of other actions.
