Dave - that last photo is nuthin'!

Is this one of those new generation expressions that mean the opposite of what they say, like 'sick' ?

If so, then I agree.  Stunning display and a beautiful desk.

PJH - your setup has ample room and looks like a great creative space! I was checking out your pictures on the far wall to see if you had any framed gold records. Looks like you could have one with that studio you have.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Lots of nice places in these photos.  I need to desperately get a new desk.  I am on a glass-top L-shaped desk and it totally sucks.  My rack-mount equipment is on the righthand side, so it's in close proximity for tweaking, but the big A6 Andy is on a stand to the right (behind) the desk.  Not conducive to have it be programmed and/or played.

Me to. My desk is a piece of wood I cut and put leather material over it and it sits on two wooden snack trays. I also need more room for my lava lamp which is not in the pic

Basically no matter what your main monitoring rig is, it's very important to cross-reference to a variety of systems and environments - studio monitors and headphones, quality earbuds, crappy earbuds, consumer computer speakers, laptop speakers, home stereo rigs, car stereos, phones and tablets, bluetooth speakers... obviously it makes no sense to do this with every mix decision, but as you get close to something you want to get behind, that should start. There are ways to fake it - plugins that mimic different speaker response and so on - but it's really no substitute for the real thing... and of course, the bonus is that as you do this you start to learn how your main rig translates to other systems, and you get better at predicting and accounting for that, and your mixes get faster and better. Well, that's the theory anyway!

I like to use things like Toneboosters TB Isone for a quick comparison what things 'may' be like on different systems etc, but like you said, not really a substitute for the real thing, but quick and easy and convenient.

Anyone using a U-shaped desk for their studio?  Not very conducive for a mixing studio, but it could be wonderful for a "command center" of synthesizers!  Craigslist in Phoenix is full of these bad boys!  What do you guys think?

Let's try this again!....New room with the basic building blocks in place.  Working on a few more pieces of outboard gear to sweeten things up a bit.  I love this room......it's my creative escape!

I really enjoyed seeing all of your rooms and rigs.....gives me some good ideas for the future!

Dave I see you have the Digitech DSP 256XL. I have the same one. Nice unit of FX and nice studio to.

I record my vocals and sometimes a guitar track, if I need to, other than that I produce music in the box.

I am centered on a wall, as far away from it as I can go, which is only about 18 inches because the desk is L shaped, though I cropped the photo.

When I sit at the desk, my listening position forms a nearly-equilateral triangle with those monitors.

This space is completely untreated.  As I sit at the desk, on the wall behind me are the entrance door left and a door to a closet right.  The left side wall is unbroken.  The right side wall has a window about 2/3 of the way back.

So it's not an ideal space by any stretch in terms of acoustics, but that's the way it is here at Spare Room Studios, where headphones are readily available:)

I think you might run into problems with all of those hard, reflective surfaces which are going to introduce stereo imaging & delay/smearing issues.

Just my opinion - my knowledge of acoustics is sketchy at best!

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the compliment ... I feel like a kid brother finally getting the chance to see what is in Big brother's room when I look at some of these spaces... Impressive...

I got introduced to A&H stuff with the purchase of the R16 (Thanks Karl).  I am really impressed with their stuff. I will PM you. I am using it as a controller for Sonar (Thanks Azslow3) also and it is very capable playing dual duty (live, studio).  I think it will be a great addition.. I know it has been for me....

Here's my standard initial settings setup for full miking of a drumkit:
Snare top: Shure SM57 and MD421
Snare side: Shure SM57 (MD421 takes too much hi-hat bleed)
 Floor tom: MD421 or MD441

Hi Panup,
I have a couple of questions regarding the mic's, if you find some time I'd like to hear your opinion:

a) Does the MD421 on the snare top not take too much bleed from the hi-hat??
b) What about the MD441 for snare (side or top)......any experience? It's supposed to have less bleed than the MD421 am I right?
c) Why do you use it on the floor-tom? any special reason (more brightness...??)

-> I'm considering investing in an MD441 myself....though I don't think the budget will allow for it right now

regards, Mat

Here's my standard initial settings setup for full miking of a drumkit:
Snare top: Shure SM57 and MD421
Snare side: Shure SM57 (MD421 takes too much hi-hat bleed)
 Floor tom: MD421 or MD441

In my use it bleeds less than SM57. MD441 has very smooth overall freq response. Bass is well defined and high end is silky. It's not scooped as modern tom mics but MD441 is easy to EQ, just like my other favorite, AKG C414B-ULS.

My MD441s are very old and they have lost some brightness. I always have to add some brightness in mixing stage.
MD421 for the snare drum is my other favorite; more brightness and low end than SM57 but hi-hat also bleeds more to it.

Mat,

if MD441 is too expensive, take a look at the Shure SM7B. It's currently as my snare bottom mic but it sounds great on speech, vocals, guitars and bass, too.
