So I've installed Windows 10 by accident

I run Windows Update manually, so it doesn't decide to kick off on its own while I'm doing something critical. Like downloading a sample library or watching The Walking Dead.

This morning I noticed I hadn't run it since August, and there were like a hundred security updates in the queue. So I kicked off the updates and the first thing that popped up was "Downloading Windows 10". Yikes! I wasn't ready for that, so I quickly clicked the "Stop download" button.

Later in the day, I had to reboot. I went to make a cup of coffee and when I came back, it said "Ready to install Windows 10". Ah, crap. Oh well, what the hell, I understand it's easy to roll back. So I told it to go ahead.

Still waiting for the install to complete, so I don't yet know if this is about to turn into a bad day or what. At least now it'll finally stop pestering me about upgrading. So there's that.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

My upgrade, running the first preview, was flawless, and I was astonished...
and everything still worked...making it even more impressive to me...

After having beta tested every version of Windows since 3.1, it was quite
a welcome experience....LOL

Fingers crossed...I'm assuming that most things that worked under 8.1 will be OK with Win10 as well.

SONAR shouldn't be a problem, and Focusrite says my interface will work (as long as I have the right Firewire card, which I think I do).

The other biggie is my VirtualBox VM, which should be alright. Lots of people have been runing Win 10 within the VM since beta, so the VM itself should be OK.

Hmm, wouldn't it be great if my Tranzport started working again? Just dreaming.

On my test computer i was able to get my old delta card working by installing the driver in compatibility mode.

Perhaps that would work for your tranzport.

If worse comes to worse just do a restore.

I've had a few ghosts in the machine because of that last major update last week.
It change my dual boot sequence & placed a new partition file on one of my internal hardrives.
Because of that I had to re-register a few plugins. Other than that it seems to working fine.

Everything worked for me except ilok software, but let's be honest if you look at ilok the wrong way it could stop working. After re-registering everything was fine.

My pc and Sonar are actually running better after the November Windows 10 update.
I used to get daily, random audio engine drop-outs. These have not occurred for 3 days (and counting) now since the update.

Yup, had to re-authorize Omnisphere. All other plugins tested have come up without complaint, even (gasp!) the Waves stuff. It's not that I expect any O/S incompatibilities with plugins, that's unlikely. The potential problems are with licenses that are tied to the O/S.

Had a moment's panic when VirtualBox refused to run, then found out a new version had been released last week. Installed that and all is well again. Whew.

Try the delayed startup fix for ILOK. It solved my problem.

I'm still not to sure about 10. I've tried it twice and restored my system twice. I'm backing up everything again now...so I may try again. My Presonus 44VSL was blocked by Windows Defender after one trouble free day of use. I may need to update the driver in it, which has a increase in latency. I've talked to ADK pro audio about it twice and they still recommend waiting awhile. I'll probably do it in the Spring. I'll have to at some point.

Booting up this morning took 2 minutes on a machine that normally boots in 15 seconds.  I reckon Windows still had some stuff to do, and perhaps future boot times will improve.

I've just discovered that what's been installed is Home Edition. That surprises me, because I'd been running 8.1 Professional. And it sucks because it means I have no control over Windows updates. Heck, I don't even have a control panel applet for Windows Update anymore. Just a setting for the time of day that the "maintenance" will run. Problem is, there is no hour of the day when I'm guaranteed not to be on the computer.

Windows was telling me that "One or more devices connected to your PC needs additional software to work properly". No further explanation, just a button labeled "Install". Crossed my fingers and clicked Install, not knowing what "device" it was talking about. Still don't. But it's not complaining anymore.

Windows seems to be getting more and more idiot-proof, and this idiot resents it. 8.1 was already on that course, making me jump through hoops to run downloaded installers that Windows took upon itself to deem dangerous. Like VST updates. Dangerous stuff like that.

Pulled up an old project that had several instances of Dim Pro in it - wouldn't load them. Says Dim Pro isn't registered, but entering the same code that's listed in my Cakewalk account doesn't work. Probably not a Win 10 issue, though. More likely Dim Pro's obtuse license scheme, which has been problematic in the past. (Yes, I was running as Administrator.) I just won't be using that instrument anymore.

Windows helpfully made Edge my default browser. Maybe it's great, I don't care. Internet Explorer is the reason I use Chrome and Firefox, and I don't plan on using Edge, either.

Great to have a Start menu back, though, even if it is preloaded with useless crap such as Twitter, Cortana and Candy Crush Soda Saga, whatever that is. I thought Dell was bad, trying to sell me stuff through preloaded bloatware. My project today will be customizing the start menu.

The best argument for Windows 10, which should be Microsoft's new slogan: "It's not Windows 8".

First two or three days windows 10 is slow. Then it speeds up. Occasionally an update resets it and you have to wait again for it to optimize itself.

At this point, and if it was me, I would revert back to windows 8.1 and run the update program from MS web page and get the correct update to win 10 Pro.
Win 10 does have an option menu that you can click to revert back to 8.1.

Suggest you uninstall/reinstall Dim Pro if you decide to use it again. Lot of tricky issues often need tackling like that.

I also delete my AUD.INI as a matter of course when I upgrade the OS, might be unnecessary but this has resolved other issues (not dim pro of course).

Windows 7 Pro and Win 7 Ultimate users get Win 10 Pro, but apparently Home is the standard upgrade path from all versions of Win 8.1.

Running down the list of differences, it looks as though I'm not giving up anything essential in going from Pro to Home. I've never hosted a remote desktop session (only as an RDC client, which I can still do), never used Bitlocker or Azure AD.

I can live with the forced updates, I guess. But I'm waiting for the inevitable day when an automatic update kills millions of computers around the world simultaneously and there's no way to prevent it short of pulling the network cable.

I upgraded from 8.1 to Win10 Pro, but I started out with Win8 Pro. I suspect you may not have had Win8.1 Pro loaded.

Possible moot point but windows 8.1 pro does update to win 10 pro. (That's what I got).

Also, I have wondered whether "home" might be a better choice than "pro" for a DAW.
I am  _speculating_  that the extra networking stuff in "pro" may unnecessarily use more ram/cpu than "home".

Re: So I've installed Windows 10 by accident 2015/11/19 12:47:36 (permalink)
I guess I didn't have 8.1 Pro after all. Well, no big. There is nothing unique to W10Pro that's relevant to audio. There may even be one or two unnecessary background processes that aren't running in Home that I'd probably turn off anyhow.

I just completed my first SONAR project under Win 10. No I'm not that fast, it's one I started a few days ago. The only odd thing I noticed was that Kontakt libraries seem to load very slowly. This particular project has multiple Kontakt instances and it takes 5 minutes to load the first time and 3 minutes on subsequent loads. I'm pretty sure that yesterday it took less than a minute, although I didn't have my stopwatch handy. Anyone else notice this?

Kontakt libs are very quick to load. Play libs still on the slow side.

I did notice the other day that Windows Defender real time protection is always 'ON' when launching,  doesn't maintain the selected off state as it did before.
I always turn it off, several times now I've heard an audible click through my soundcard. This has never happened to me before in any previous version of Windows.

Make sure to take the time to configure Win 10 to meet your needs. There are a lot of things that you should look at. Updates was a big one, particularly the options for where you get updates.

As for updates in general, I find that 90% are just definition updates for MS security essentials. I get 2 every single day (24hr). It used to be silent definition updates but now it nags. Actual program changes seem infrequent.

Yeah, Windows 10 will turn back on Windows defender after a few days.
I got this notification the first time I turned it off:
"You can turn this off temporarily, but if it's off for a while we'll turn it back on automatically."

I am not certain because I was not looking for issues, but I do think it is taking much longer to load templates and projects with Win10. I have a few VSTs in my main template including Kontakt, so Kontakt could be loading slower with Win10. It is not slow enough to bother me, but I think it is real.

Win7 pro will upgrade to win10 pro. Not surprised they put you down to home they probably want you to pay for an upgrade in future. They are also conning enterprise users into paying up as well, stating they cannot upgrade to 10... When they can legitimately downgrade to pro and then update to 10.

The big advantage of win10 is ability to defer updates. There are other advantages as well which may not be immediately apparent. I strongly urge you to take advantage of this. People are upgrading from home just because of this feature.

Also, I have wondered whether "home" might be a better choice than "pro" for a DAW.
I am _speculating_ that the extra networking stuff in "pro" may unnecessarily use more ram/cpu than "home".

Nope. You can turn off the pro features you don't use. MS may also be releasing exclusive pro features in future you may regret not being able to take advantage of. Maybe even features exclusive for DAW environments (for all we know).
