So what are you doing musically? And are you achieving your goals?
Since I started using recording software 6 years ago my goals have drastically changed over the years. The last 3 years I've actually recorded a lot less than I did when I first got into recording. I've been taking lessons and improving my skills and lately I've been driving more toward playing live with others, which I had never done in the past. I know that puts me in a huge minority here, but even at 48 years old, I don't think it's ever too late to do something. Some of you have done that most of your lives and have moved away from that and toward recording, I believe. I seem to be doing the opposite. But this is what I am wanting to do and I'm having a blast doing it! I just hope I can fit some recording time in, too, eventually! so where are you guys/gals?

I got back into recording music about 4 years ago with the intention of writing more music and recording it. Mainly for fun. Then I started to work on making the music sound better and also on writing better. One thing often leads to another, and things changed a bit in direction. Over that time I have met a few people who have encouraged me to develop my writing talent and skills. In the course of this time I have met a few very talented people and I have connected with a very skilled lyricist with whom I co-write. I met some professional writers a while back, who listened to some of the tunes I've written and really encouraged me to learn more and hone the skills I had into more refined writing skills. How to polish a tune and make it the best it can be. I've also gotten active in trying to place my songs in movies, ads, and in other places such as Nashville with the artists there. So far, I've had several songs signed into some pretty decent music libraries for film & TV one of which is one of the "A-list" libraries, and several have been and are currently submitted to some artists whose names you would recognize from Nashville. Competition is hard & heavy for those precious few spots on the CD's but just to know I'm in the group being considered is cool. At this point, I'm looking at how far I've come and looking ahead of how far there is to go yet. But I take it one song at a time. Trying with each one to make improvements in the writing over the last one. One day, hopefully, I will hear one of my songs, a song that I had some part in creating, being played or sung on the radio or TV. I understand this business is about good songs and perseverance, but I also understand that much of it is being in the right place at the right time with the right song..... so if I never realize that aspect of hearing my music performed publicly, I still know that I enjoyed the ride.

Beag I traveled so much the last few months, the only times I have turned on my DAW was to install updates Interestingly enough though, my neighbors view that as massive progress
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. While I have a more or less steady stream of commercial projects (although my "stream" is not what it used to be...in more ways than one) I've been trying to finally finish a vanity CD project that's been on the back burner for umpty-leven years. I have finally realized that I cannot do it here at my project studio working only on weekends as I have too many "family" distractions and chores. So...as my B suite sits idle downtown...I am moving my project studio down there this month. That way when there's little or no business I can still work on my music project. I don't look forward to moving...but that grammy for best "new" artist and record of the year ain't gettin any closer;-)

I always thought of myself as a performer. It was only recently that I looked back and realized that the aspect of performing I enjoyed the most was in creating something new. In the past, the only avenue I had open to do this was by performing live. Since I started working on recording projects several years ago, my focus has shifted to writing and collaborating with other musicians on their recording projects. I'm working on rebuilding so I can churn out my own projects. I have no illusions about popularity or monetary success. In all liklihood, this will be a self-funded, expensive hobby with no measurable income. At the end, though, I'd like to leave some kind of tangible musical legacy behind, even if it's only for my kids. It's one way of sharing with them who I was. It's also a way to provide drink coasters.

My days of playing live are long gone. Nobody wants to hear the music I love and did back in the day anymore. The crowd that danced to Mony Mony are now staying home watching their grandkids while their kids are going out dancing Chingy and the Yo! Yo!'s. That's what got me in to recording. I missed playing out so much and this kind of filled that void. Plus I have a lot of alone time with my wife traveling for work, and you can only watch TV for so long before you start going out to bars and getting in trouble. I'm not sure if MM was being sincere or just kidding around, but what he mentioned has completely stopped me dead in my tracks. I've spent so much time trying to make this work since Dec. that I've hardly got anything done at all and now I don't even have the desire. And it's a shame because I have all the free time in the world right now. Honestly, lately I've been seriously considering getting rid of it all, even my guitars, and calling it quits. That's kind of where I'm at with music at this point. You're lucky to have found somewhere to fit in to in the music scene being your age Reece. I'm guessing your in a praise band or something similar? Nothing wrong with that at all!

I recently moved to a small church which, before I came only had 2 people on the praise team. the leader and another singer and the leader plays acoustic and runs the sound, too. and he has created some backing tracks for missing instruments, so the need is great (and therefore I don't have to be! ). I'm singing and playing keyboard and I'm loving it! and we've added a soundman since I started, too! sorry you're having so many problems and are frustrated. it's not a good thing for the soul to be so downhearted over problems that you want to give up. I hope you don't.

The problem for me is usually not a matter of having enough energy or enough time. It's the fact that those two don't intersect very often.

mike_mccue I've been working on an vocal retake for a song I posted last week... and it seems to get worse each time. :-) It's massively humbling. So I've also been playing loud electric blues through some foot pedals as a way to have some fun too. I've become preoccupied with thinking about ambisonic recording lately... I think it's time to set up a surround system at my house. best regards, mike I completely understand your prediciment! I've posted songs on the songs forum for years and have always had mixed reviews of my vocals. some people love them, others can't stand them. meh. I've worked hard at improving them the best I can and have come to the conclusion that I can't please everyone. if they don't like my vox then they can choose not to listen.

Generally I am achieving my goals musically. In the mid '70s I dreamed of having my own recording studio in the home. I never dreamed of having a modest collection of guitars and basses (one bass and one guitar was enough back then) or even a drum set. Now I have more than I ever dreamed of yet it's fully satisfying even though I dod not have enough time in the day, week month or year to fully learn everything I own, I do seem to occasionally finish something. Gotta go now.. the next mix awaits.

I moved from playing in a band to recording mostly because, all I really wanted to do was to write and record. My main, unspoken goal, was to be able to be a whole rock band by myself and to do the best I could w/ what I had at my disposal. I started w/ an open reel machine and soon discovered that you could record on a PC. Moving to computers, I've developed an interest for electronic music and sound itself and a lot of my attention shifted toward engineering/production. It was there, it just developed I guess. For a few years, I've experimented with, lets say in broad terms, Nine Inch Nails sort of stuff. The one constant being, I always wanted to do it all by myself. After a 2 years hiatus, I'm getting back to it. My fiancée put me on a job - to come up with songs for her next solo album. While officially I'm only recording demos for the time being, I can't help but try and do as much as I can to bring the project to a place where a lot of that stuff could probably make it onto the album. But then, we have access to great musicians and good studios, so I don't know exactly how it'll turn out. So far, all I can say is that we're both impressed to see how decent those early attempts already are in view of what we/she wanted. In all those years, the one thing I've always avoided was vocals - I can do pretty much everything else, and bring it to the level where I feel it's good. But I never completely trusted that I'd be able to finish anything beyond instrumental. I knew I'd probably have to do it, but it's the one thing I can't see myself doing even as a one man band. As such, writing material for her allows me to really push my dream to the next level - I've found the voice for my projects, I no longer have to worry that I might not be up to it vocally. And it's all coming full-circle. When she first heard the stuff I had been recording for the past few months, she just bursted w/ enthusiasm and asked if I'd be willing to bring that stuff on the stage and maybe tour a bit. I guess I could live with that. One of the reasons I hated playing live was that I always ended up at the front of the stage, right in the spotlight, handling both lead vocals and lead guitar. There's no chance of that happening with her by my side - that's what she does, that's where she lives, so I can focus on the music. Which is where I feel I belong. Musical director of some kind - almost like Jimmy Page and Robert Plant... It's like all the pieces falling into their right place.

Reece I think it's great that you are studying and playing music with others. I sure enjoyed lessons and playing live years ago and have some great memories. Sure wish you the best with that. My recording goals weren't high in the beginning and I'm glad for that because it's expensive for no more than I wanted it for. I like having the gear for when I want to use it. Now my goal has become to maybe use it enough to remember how! I am glad I made it through all the changes with new OS, 64 bit, etc...that wasn't fun but I sure like being able to use all the software like Spectrasonics stuff. Great fun when I have some play time. So yeah....my goals were met. A good system that I enjoy when I want to sit down and enjoy it when I'm not busy working on other goals that mean much more to me.

since moving down from Liverpool and losing the collab stuff i did with my mate Steve i decided to concentrate on the metal stuff...which has led to a fruitful period of around 25 songs in the last 18 months or so. trying to get a cd out to a few labels. playing at various church-based events...starting a new job soon so may have more opportunity to do live stuff...

Michael - thanks, I'm really enjoying it! and it sounds like you're enjoying yourself as well! I know I really enjoy seeing the fruits of your handcrafted labor anyway! I've enjoyed your music and recordings in the past, too, though admittedly I haven't listened to it in a while... mark - that sounds cool, too. I wasn't aware of your move and losing collab material - that would suck. but it sounds like you're really having a good go at it lately!

Good luck to you Reece. There is no order in how you develop as an artist. Personally I am relatively happy with being able to have some gear to play with and record. The guitar is an ongoing learning experience, for me, which I was denied at the age of ten, "It is just a passing fad he will forget it in a few weeks" was the quote. Not sure how they would explain the six guitars (seventh in progress) and the one 5 string bass, the seven hardware synths and all the other music making bits I now have. Could make for an interesting conversation if they were still with us. I am fortunate to get a reasonable amount of time to use my stuff. One or two of my guitars are played every day. If I am lucky I learn something new. Have fun Reece have fun.

Hey Reece thats great that you have the opportunity to play live at your church. I am only a part time studio guy and I have never attempted to make money on any of my stuff or to seek out any paying customers. I got into this thing for the fun of it and I really do enjoy recording and playing and learning. I used to feel slighted and slightly envious of those who have tons of time in the studio when I had to get up and go to work and tend to my other responsibilities which takes a lot of my time. Now though, I feel that it has helped me out overall and is the best thing. I can't see myself confined to a studio all day every day. Being out helps me to get away from a mix and hear it later with fresh ears. While I'm out of my studio I can be thinking of other ideas to use while I'm in there.I am in better shape getting out too. I like having no timelines to meet and no demands are made on me for anything. No competitition either. I just make music. I have had mixed results playing live, been in a few bands that never went anywhere but were a lot of fun. I have been in leadership positions in four churches . In most of those settings leadership means you do all of the stuff noone else wants to do. Still I enjoyed it for the most part. Now I can almost predict what will happen in certain situations and its all good. I was WL at my last church and we were a seeker church,no hymns,no traditional anything. Drums bass, electric guitar, keys and some people with good pipes. Small tweaks over time had us all playing and sounding good together. Then I got tired, just really tired and needed a break and the band was at a place where they no longer needed me(we started out with just me on keys and things really grew). I left there and am now at a smaller church playing an 88 key grand and sometimes guitar. I am not leading by choice so that I can have more time to write in the studio. Its nice not to need to lug my keyboard there. I am finding a lot of satisfaction writing whatever I want to write, but things in the studio move really slow with me maybe only having a few hours a night in there at most and some evenings no time at all. At this point in my life I'm just happy to be playing out once a week and making my own music.

Good topic Reece and I've enjoyed reading the replies. I'm really glad you are getting to play out much more, aside from the fun you are obviously having, it is the amount of learning and growth that you will have already achieved by doing it. The instant feedback that an audience is giving you is the ultimate guide and makes it all fun, yet just feeling that 'love' is far more powerful than any formal instruction. For me there is no substitute for 'doing the do'.

Thanks John! and thanks for sharing! I understand the parental thing. I was a little older, a teen, when I wanted something other than a dirty ol' piano to play on. man I do wish I hadn't felt that way and had continued playing the piano all those years, tho. I love this quote: "There is no order in how you develop as an artist." Tim - great story, thanks for sharing - it sounds like you're living what you want to do as well. right now I don't mind lugging the keyboards back and forth. I don't have to move the keyboard amp tho, it stays at the church, so it's not bad at all really and yes, I'm learning a lot and having fun! Thanks JB! you're right! it's incredible getting that feedback from the audience! very powerful stuff! mike - that sounds like a blast! have fun!

For many years, I hauled my drums twice a week to play in church, helped the keyboardist carry their gear, and hauled and set up the sound equipment. The bassist and the guitarist would walk in 30 minutes late, plug in, and ask why I wasn't ready yet. When it starts to become a chore, enlist some local teens to be your roadie. They're strong and they don't know any better. It will seem like fun to them.

My roadie kid (Josh) is commanded to remember my acoustic guitar (cause I forget); I play for fun and desperately try to seize any artistic hook that is beautiful. A microscopic country church is a regular for me: acoustic guitar and choir (usually in alternating manner); church gigs are strictly for fun. The home DAW is another animal, equivalent to my portrait painting. (Unfortunately, I hack at many arts and sciences and get burnt out) I oft try to collab with 'you all' ... to become new again with passionate productions. Curiously, the musical fads, passions, and/or talents change from season to season, they also die and resurrect quite a bit. Then I lurk here.

I've been trying to decide whether to change my strings for 2 years.
