I kicked nicotine about 16 years ago...cold...never went back.
I was prescribed Ativan during a time of unbearable grief, and I didn't know it was addictive.  It took me 8 months to realize that I needed to get off of it, and when I did, it was the middle of Winter and I did it in 2 weeks, which is fast...too fast.  It almost wasn't worth the grief it caused me when I quit.  I was so low, I didn't know if I would make it.
When I heard Chris Cornell had Ativan in his system when he hung himself, I thought that it must have played a role.

Ativan is not addictive.  One can get a dependence on it sometimes, and that can be mistaken for addiction.  It's not like heroin and nictotine.  I'm saying this so people don't stop taking or refuse to take ativan for fear of becoming addicted.  Contrary to the PC vein, I recommend it if you're having anxiety.

It's a stop gap though such as valium.

Anxiety/depression are better treated with the recent gen of SSRI's. Just takes a while to find the right one that works with your chemistry.

And I'd say people are more paranoid about those types of drugs than something like ativan because of earlier incarnations (such as Prozac and the like which helped a lot of seriously screwed up people when there weren't any other options but not so good for less severe cases or those who didn't react well).

Ativan is good for gettin' ya off the booze though (better than valium unless you are dealing with a delirium tremen situation) and severe anxiety flareups.

Cripes... how many more times am I gonna have to edit this post.

Good song that.

@Beeps, it's 'gabba gabba'. I saw that movie when I was about 13...probably explains a lot.

I've heard that it's not addictive, also...but stepping down off it was a bear...and I was told by a doctor friend that it normally takes months, not weeks, to get off of it.  It did help me through a rough period.

Ya, I'm sure Ativan is less addictive than other meds designed to do what it does but as far as I know it is not something that should be taken longer than absolutely necessary.

Nicotine.

My sister got my wife and I the patch in 1996 for Christmas. In the mail. Can you believe that?
Timing was good as we were moving a fledgling company out of the house and into a no smoking office building.
She didn't know that.

Never looked back. Best present ever.

I quit smoking in February 2013. I'd been smoking since I was 12 and was up two packs a days for years - more when I drank... Best decision of my life.

I quit coffee 2 years ago - but started again when I started working daytime last summer. I used to drink a few pots a day, and couldn't function before my second cup in the morning. Now I only drink coffee at work on weekdays.

The one nasty habit I never managed to kick is soda pop - diet cola. I spent two weeks w/o when I was in the hospital last spring and couldn't wait to drink a diet Pepsi when I got out. That crap is highly addictive.

But one chooses his battles, and I have had other, more pressing battles than dropping soda pop.

More accurately a fred of mine was deleted in the CH today.
