[Solved] HELP!! My C drive free space keeps decreasing and I won't be able to install X3d!

Hello everyone. Excuse my ignorance, but is C drive supposed to lose its free space drastically even if you don't add anything in there? I'm using a laptop and when I clean re-installed my OS (Win 7 64-bit) in early October, I partitioned the hard disk into three drives (C/D/E), and allocated about 50GB to C drive. When I finished installing everything I needed, I remember I had at least 8GB left in C drive. Recently, I noticed it was reduced to around 5GB, and during the last several days it was reduced to about 3GB.....2GB.....and now, I have only about 1.5GB left.

I use C drive for only applications and VSTs (.dll files), D drive for library contents (except for those I can't choose to install in there, such as Studio Instruments), and E drive for everything I create and save, such as projects, presets, documents, pictures and videos, and my download path is also E drive, so I don't think I'm adding anything to C drive. I've run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter but they didn't help much.

I think I have two questions here.

1. I've checked the sizes of folders and one file that are directly in C drive, but the total size of them (32,308,194,774 bytes) doesn't match the size of C drive's used space, which says 50,685,140,992 bytes (or 47.2GB). Why are they so different? I have the "Show hidden files, folders, or drives" enabled (I can see ProgramData folder).

2. Is there any data (which I didn't create) I no longer need and can delete from C drive? (other than those I can delete by Disk Cleanup)

Any information or suggestions would be highly appreciated. I don't want to see no space left next week.

Thanks

Have a check for your Temp folder in User/App Data/Local/Temp

That can swell quite a bit. Also is your recycle bin emptied?

Amongst other things, that could be your swap file increasing in size, swallowing up your drive space.

You can tell Windows to use a different drive for the swap file.

Have you been downloading anything from t'internet?  That usually goes into the Downloads folder on the system (C) drive, you could move that data onto a different drive.

Also, if you install things, they often unpack to a temporary folder on the system drive and don't always clean up properly after themselves, that can add GBs of data you can clean up (check all possible temporary file locations and clean them of files).

Is there anything there you could uninstall from the system drive and install on another drive?

Could you backup stuff under My Documents\ (or even c:\users\your_name) to another partition?  Music, pictures, videos etc.

I would say that 50GB is just not enough these days for a system drive.  My system drive (a physical disk) is 280GB or so and I'm constantly fighting against it filling up, it's a battle that I will probably lose at some point.  MY 1TB drive also completely filled recently so I needed to stick another TB drive in and move a huge chunk of data onto it (I was q. surprised to fill up an entire TB disk!!)

[edit]
Some temporary file locations to check:

C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Temp <- this folder on my work machine has half a GB of crap in it!
C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files <- 3/4 of a GB!

There is no gain by partitioning your drive in this way. In fact some would say that you've created more problems by doing this.

We always recommend 3 HDD but not 3 partitions.

Files invariably take up more space on disc than the actual file size. This Is due to the size of the blocks into which each HDD is divided. 2 different files can't use space in the same block so there is always some space left over in each block. When files are written to disc.

are you running Win7 SP1? There was a fix in SP1 that fixed the fact that there was "missing" space when you compared free space in windows to what was actually on disk,

If you open Windows Explorer and navigate to your C: drive, you will see up in the right corner of the window a little search box.

Click once on that search box, and it will display a new menu tab up at the top of the window, just to the left of center, called Search, with some options.  The options include things like: Kind, Size, Other Properties, and you will also see just to the left of those options, a calendar icon with the words Date Modified underneath - with a drop-down arrow.

Click on the drop-down arrow (or on the calendar icon) and a list of choices will be displayed.  Since you are looking for recently created files, I would suggest you pick perhaps 'This Month', and it will search your C: drive for any files created this month, displaying the results for you to review.

If you need to go back farther, try searching again, for 'Last Month'.  If that doesn't give you adequate results, you can select a range.  To select a range, rather than clicking on those options from the drop-down, click again on that search box and this time replace anything already typed in that box with:

datemodified:

This will cause a different thing to display - which will be right there at the search box.  It will display a calendar with dates on it, and you can just drag across dates to create a range.  It will automatically search after you release the mouse button after completing your date-range mouse drag.

(You could have also picked on the This Month or Last Month options from this set of options, but I gave the first technique so you could avoid having to type in datemodified)

That should give you an idea of what's filling up the drive.

Google WINSXS. Win7 started out life using about 11GB on my system drive; three (?) years later it's more than double that, and WINSXS is now larger by itself than all of Windows was to begin with.

some may shoot me for this...but go to "filehippo.com" and download "CCleaner" and run it.  It will show you a large amount of stuff that can be eliminated, and you'll have the option to keep what files you want as well.

Actually it's the shadow copies. Do this:

Click on Computer
Right click on your C drive select Properties
Click on the Disk Cleanup button
When the next box appears, check everything listed
Click on the More Options tab
In the box for System Restore and Shadow Copies click the Clean Up button. It will bark at you but do it a anyway.
Click Delete on the pop-up box then click OK on the Disc Clean up Window.
Click Delete again and walk away for a bit as it may take a minute or more.

This will get rid of a lot of junk files left behind by Windows. I do this monthly and get about 4 gig back, on my sister' machine I did this after a year and got close to 40 gig back.

I recently faced a similar problem with my wife's partition showing 6 gb more than I could account for. I downloaded TreeSize, a great little utility that shows you right away which folders are responsible.

Turned out to be the recyle bin.

you need a bigger hard drive. 50gigs was big enough 10 years ago, but in 2013, (going on 2014) you need at least 500gigs to 1 Tera for your c drive.

The more free space on your drive, the better it runs. A 50gig drive is not good and way too small

cc-cleaner. Cleans up shed loads of files (doesn't just do registries).
Check add/remove programs and remove and crud you don't use.

I just checked my DAW app partition, I'm running a ton of stuff including Windows 7 and Komplete Ultimate. I am using just 130Gb. Data and VST's are on data partition (on a different drive) and that's just 300Gb. The system right now is really really clean, my backups are done to server.

I'm confused how large your hard drive actually is, also (just to say) there is a difference between a hard drive and a partition.
It might be time for a second hard drive and consider a reinstall of Windows, separating your applications from your data (I do this sort of stuff for fun, mad I know)

I've heard too much space is a problem as well...  and 1TB sounds huge for a "C" drive if you're using other drives for samples, audio, etc.  I'm seeing 120GB SSD drives on new builds with additional drives, that I'd think would be enough.  However, Windows10 and Sonar X6 will probably eat up some space in years to come.
How far off base am I with too big a drive?

I've been using a 120 GB SSD for 2 years, samples on a 2nd drive, audio files for projects on a 3rd drive. With everything installed I have about 60 GB free.

50 GB is very small for an OS plus programs. Remember that Win 7 does not just install what you tell it to install to your C: drive. It creates a swap file equal to the size of "virtual memory" (pagefile.sys), usually a hibernation (hyberfile.sys) file equal to a three quarters or more of the size of the computer's actual memory and a huge amount of stuff in the area where restore points ( including previous versions of files if enabled),  and system images are kept. You can only see those files from windows if you set explorer to show hidden and system files. A lot of that stuff can be moved to a bigger drive or partition with some effort. There are also a lot of files stored by default that enable you to roll back to an earlier version of Windows or to undo the installation of a windows update or hotfix. A lot of that can be deleted or moved to a backup drive. MS assumes you have one infinitely large drive on your computer and puts everything on that one drive by default.

Windows Updates will eat up space over time.  You could easily have 5 GB of update files.  Microsoft did a change a few months ago that now allows the updates to be cleaned up using the Disk Cleanup utility mentioned above.  Make sure you reboot after this as it needs to finish cleaning up the files and it won't do it until after you reboot.

MS assumes you have one infinitely large drive on your computer and puts everything on that one drive by default.

As do some other guilty parties...  Not to name names... Well, maybe NI.

Well Ni software installation is pretty reasonable nowadays apart from all the useless prompting. With Komplete I managed to get it to put samples and VSTs to where I wanted it to be. It still insists on installing 32 bit plugins even when I only need 64 bit, doesn't like antivirus (as it mounts ISO images all the time) and won't install off network drives (pretty shabby really).

some may shoot me for this...but go to "filehippo.com" and download "CCleaner" and run it.  It will show you a large amount of stuff that can be eliminated, and you'll have the option to keep what files you want as well.

This is excellent advice. CCleaner gets rid of all kinds of unnecessary gunge. I run it every few weeks.

Re: HELP!! My C drive free space keeps decreasing and I won't be able to install X3d!!! 2013/12/13 23:41:48 (permalink)
Hello and thanks again for all your suggestions!

Here are my replies and further info:

  • The total size of the physical hard drive in my laptop is 320GB (biggest size that was available to this laptop).
  • As I said in my original post, the drive is partitioned into three drives: C (OS & application), D (library contents), and E (everything I download, create and save). (mudgel, you’re right, partitioning was probably a bad idea. I wonder if all laptop users are using an external hard drive for library contents, projects, presets, etc. I only use my external drive for backup purpose. I may need to reconsider my system...)
  • When I said the sizes don’t match (32,308,194,774 bytes vs. 50,685,140,992 bytes), the sizes of the folders I calculated are “Size on disk,” not just the “Size” (if the “actual file size” mudgel mentioned refers to the latter).
  • Service Pack 1 is already installed. (I should update my sig.....oh, actually, it already says SP1)
  • The recycle bin and temporary internet files are included in Disk Cleanup, so, yes, I emptied them already
  • My “Temp” folder in User/App Data/Local/Temp says only 428KB (“Size on disk”). This isn’t included in Disk Cleanup’s “Temporary files,” is it? Because “Temporary files” says only 13.8KB.
  • My default “Download” folder in C drive is empty, since I had changed the default download path in my browser preferences (Chrome). Any other “swap” files I should check? Should I just search for “hyberfile.sys” and move it to a backup drive?
  • The folder size of my c:\users\your_name is currently only 108KB (“Size on disk”). Most of the folders in there (music, pictures, videos etc.) have nothing in them.
  • Thank you very much Bob for the procedures to identify recently added files, etc. I’ve been wanting to know it (I know, I should google it but I’m lazy doing it when it comes to PC things). I’ll try it later.
  • How do I decrease the percentage used for restore files? Sorry for my ignorance…
  • I googled WINSXS now and checked the folder, and….yes, it’s huge (8.49GB) and I’m not supposed to delete its content, am I? This is probably the biggest culprit and will fill up my C drive eventually.
  • I’ll check out TreeSize. Thanks for the info.
  • Is the recent change for Disk Cleanup to have the ability to delete Windows Update files only made to Windows 8? If it was made to Win 7 as well, which item in the Disk Cleanup list is it? I don’t see anything with a big size in the list anyway…

At the moment, I prefer not to do another OS re-install (I already did it twice this year and they were a hard and time-consuming job). So, I’m thinking of either using CCleaner or doing the monthly cleanup which emwhy suggested (I have no idea which is better). I did a full backup last night so I can try anything now, and I probably have several days before my C drive becomes full. I’ll try my best.

Anyway, thank you all again, and I’d appreciate any further info. As you already know, I don’t know much about PC. I love music but hate computers. They keep changing and I can’t follow them. My previous PC was a desktop with only a 16GB hard drive and I was making music fine with Sonar 2 with mostly hardware synths. Times have changed. I feel like smashing my laptop and hit the trail with just an acoustic guitar. But I know I can’t…

Thanks

Tak T.

The Disk Cleanup update is in Win 7 too, but it's a bit weird to use. You have to run disk cleanup and go through the scan, and the Windows Update files initially won't show in the list. If you then click the button marked "Clean Up System Files" (requires admin privileges) it will do the scan again and add them to the list.

Yep, me too. About once a month, I do a general house tidy with both of those things. Once you get to know the settings, you can leave them as they are and just nuke it. Takes me two minutes these days.
