This error is often due to pending Windows updates. Make sure Windows is up to date.

After having the extraction freeze twice, I restarted my computer. After trying again, it hung, but the install didn't stop responding the way it did the first two times. After about 10 minutes, it started installing again, then gave me your error message and rolled itself back. I'm on windows 7 pro fully updated, and have rarely had few if any install problems. Certainly nothing like this. I'm not running any type of virus protection other the the standard MS install.

The error message looks like it could permissions related...    If the SONAR installer download itself is in your CCC cache folder, it may be worth trying to manually run with the right-click Run As Administrator option.   If nothing else, one more thing to rule out.

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/03/31 08:45:52 (permalink)
I don't know what Microsoft did but trying to get Windows 7 fully up to date is a major pain.
I updated a laptop to Windows 10 and it was a 4 day effort!  Updates kept hanging. I tried every bit of advice on the interwebs to get it unstuck.
I have another VM image of Windows 7 that I tried to just install the updates (not upgrade to 10) that still hasn't updated but then I didn't keep at it, running the VM on a Mac which tends to heat it up.

One thing you can try is to install the VS2015 redist separately.
You can obtain that here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145
Then run the SONAR install again once that is installed.

We built the 2016 edition with Visual Studio 2015 which does have some performance gains in the compiler and linker.  However, that does require the newer c runtime, etc.be installed.  Our installer does include this and install it, but on Win 7 certain combinations of updates not being present can sometimes lead to delays or failures completing the dependent redistributable installers.

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/03/31 09:09:41 (permalink)
I checked for updates again last night, and windows update told me that there were not available. So, I went to bed and figured I would try again this morning. I went to the MS site and downloaded their utility, the Automated Troubleshooter, which is recommended to fix updates for windows 7.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us

I ran the utility, but it hung on the "resolving issues" portion for over an hour. I then rebooted my computer and ran windows update again. The updater now says that there are 54(!!!) available updates. So, I'm installing them. I'll keep updating until I can't, then try again.

I was looking forward to the early adoption program, but I'm not happy that it doesn't come with the release ezine. Seems a bit like taking a hike with a blindfold on.

Well I finally got it installed...I started with updates...then more updates...then some problems. At some point Windows Update stopped working so I tried the Fix tool...that stopped working as well and it reported a problem with my Vegas Pro 13...great! It turns out one of the updates turned on Windows Firewall which blocked the things I wanted(and probably not the ones I don't ;) ). I turned the Firewall off and early access installed right away. I have a hardware firewall so I don't use the Windows one. Now to play!

Today I updated the control center then
- DL & installed all updates then
- lost my desktop shortcut Sonar Prof Icon
- tried to launch from the control center & got the following error message

can't start SONARPRO.exe system error
api-ms-win-crt-runtime-I1-1-0.dll                    is missing

Then reinstalled all of the Sonar Pro components parts again from command center.
Still no desk top icon & same error message
So re-booted computer - no change.

what is that dll   ??
anyone got a fix ?????

I'm having similar problems to the above so tried installing the c++ libraries separately. However, this wouldn't work and failed with an 'unspecified error.' So what to do next?

Had the same problem. Solved with installation of the two C++ 2015 redist (downloaded from Microsoft).
Thanks...

I can't install the C++ Redistributable 14.0.23026, it hangs on "Windows7_MSU_x64". So I can't continue with Sonar until I upgrade to Windows 10? Good job!

Win10 is not a requirement. I do not believe other users in this thread had to do anything other than run the appropriate updates for their OS.

The problem is, I can't do any updates on Windows7 anymore. They changed something at microsoft so the Windows Update is broken. At least for me and a whole bunch of other people.

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/05/27 23:36:52 (permalink)
Having the same problem as other posters here.  I didn't update Windows 7 for the past couple of years, so that's probably the problem--but who knew that Sonar updates would depend on that--or else they'd blow up completely?  Things were working very well on my computer until the recent Platinum updates.

This is how it went down:  First, I tried to update Platinum from Command Center, and the installation failed. Reason given:
"api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1l-0.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program."

Platinum was also automatically removed from my start menu.  I still had a desktop icon, and tried to launch it and got this messge:
"Unable to register the DLL/OCX:  RegSvr32 failed with exit code ox3.  Sonar has a support page for that error.

Ok--then tried to update Win7 with updater--some updates failed, and I didn't get the one I needed.
Then--Windows Updater got locked up.  Didn't work for over a day.

Tried the Microsoft automated troubleshooter.  It said it fixed my updater problems.

I'm taking the last step on the Sonar Support page and reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ 2015.  Support gives the link to Microsoft.  First attempt--the message told me it's already on the computer and to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Visual.

That's where I am right now.  I've been waiting 5 hours now while the installation says it's "Processing."  How long does it take?  Is it hung up?

Did you other guys solve this, or did you give up on Sonar?

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/05/28 01:48:22 (permalink)
@Saxon1066
I had the same problem on tow computers and solved it on the same way. The problem ist that some of the windows updates in the last 6 months cause the search process to hang. By manually installing these, the windows updater skips them and continues searching at a normal rate. Since you didn`t update for a year it could be a whole bunch of KBs you have to install manually. Check this site out, the guy not only explains the problem, he also posts every month a list of updates that could cause problems.

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/05/28 05:23:12 (permalink)
Thanks, Aksuaho.  I'll check out that link.

Well, it took about 5 1/2 hours to get Visual C++ 2015 uninstalled and reinstalled, and then about three hours for Platinum to update or fix itself with the Command Center, but . . . . SUCCESS!

That really was the key Win7 update.  It just didn't update correctly with the Windows Updater, so for me uninstalling first was what worked.  Hope everyone else with this problem got Visual C++ 2015 re-installed.

So, Platinum has launched for me--even with some of the optional Win7 updates having failed.  I'm not sure I want to mess with things now that Platinum is up and running.

I know we are responsible to keep our computers updated, but I, at least, don't like updating my operating system too often, since something else usually goes wrong.  It would have helped if Cake had posted a sticky saying we must update to Visual C++ 2015 before updating to the newest Platinum versions.  That's kind of a big change, I think.

Heh!  Platinum was working--then crashed--probably because Windows insisted on installing 234 updates right then and there, which it is still doing now.  At least I'm almost set!

Thanks for all the info here. I'm right in the middle of "DLL/OCX:  RegSvr32 failed HELL" at the moment too.
Saxon1066, the scenario you outlined above is right where I'm at: Visual C++2015 is somehow not correctly installed or incomplete, but I can't get enough info to know how to fix it..but WinUpdate now seems to be stuck and not downloading any new updates. I can look at my old C drive and see there are more updates that *should* be there.
Until Win7/MS blinks, I can't seem to get SONAR installed. Much tail chasing :)

I think the key first step for me was doing what someone else here recommended--
1. turning off windows firewall temporarily, then
2. doing the windows fix for the windows updater:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us
Next,
3. I uninstalled, then reinstalled Visual C++2015.
It took a while--like 6 1/2 hours--to do all this, but it wasn't hung up like before I did the update fix.
4. With firewall back on, the rest of the automatic updates worked fine.
Give those steps a try!

Thanks..I think that's right where I'm at. Firewall is now off, and I left Windows Update ( in theory, fixed) to do it's thing while I slept last night. Woke up to 229 updates cued up!

Your 6 hour estimate appears to be spot on....time to get some other house projects done while Windows builds itself up :)

Update: ( pun intended) As others have noted, confirmed with my experience as well. On a clean install, one must let Win7 update FULLY in order for Command Center to do its job correctly. When you think Windows Update is caught up, chances are there are still A LOT of updates still on the way. If WUD appears stuck, walk away for a while and let it search. Your 300+ updates will be lined up soon enough. Command Center worked perfectly once this had been solved.

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/07/19 10:32:25 (permalink)
I am SOOOOOOOOOO..... UPSET!!.  I had to spend five 12hr days to get Sonar to run again.  That is 60 hrs wasted.  You'd think that if the installer somehow knew that this or that dll was out of date or missing, it would have halted.  Instead it trashed the previously 100% working OK version of Sonar, AND REMOVED THE DESKTOP ICON FOR ICING ON THE CAKE.  I need this thing to work.

First off Windows Update has been discombobulated by Microsoft.  In the interests of posting a helpful post rather than a screaming rant, here is what you need to do:

1. Do a "clean boot".  Run msconfig and take notes of what was what before you screw with it.  On General tab select Selective Startup and clear the Load Startup Items check box.  On Services tab, select "Hide all Microsoft Services" then click Disable All.  Reboot.
2. Download from MS "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic", save it, then run it.  It will likely report errors it can't fix.
3.  Download "MicrosoftFixit 5020", save and run.  Reboot.  Run "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" again to see if errors are fixed.  Likely not.
4.  Download and save "Fix WU"  from http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-fix-windows-updates-with-fix-wu-utility and run it.  Run the "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" again, see if its fixed.  Likely not.
5.  Run the Fixit 5020 again, but this time select "Aggressive" mode.  Reboot.  Run the "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" again.  Fixed?  Likely not.
6.  Run the command prompt as Administrator and give these two commands.  "net stop wuauserv" and "net stop bits".  If they can't stop, reboot, try again.  Once they are stopped, delete the contents of /Windows/SoftwareDistribution.  the folder should be empty.  Reboot.  Run "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" again.  Fixed?  Nope.
7.  Download free Tweaking.com Windows Repair tool.  Boot to safe mode.  Run the repair.  Reboot to safe mode.  Run the repair 2nd time.  Reboot to normal mode. Run the "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic" again.  Fixed?
8.  Run the Fixit 5020 again in aggressive mode, reboot, then "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic".  Yay!!
9.  From Control Panel run Windows Update in "Check for Updates but let me decide".  Go buy a 12 pack, drink them all, go to bed.  In the morning install the updates found.  Reboot.
10.  From the Sonar Control Center try to update Sonar.  It will fail with various errors like "unable to register cw120auto.dll exit code 0x3", "missing opi-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1.1-0.dll", and give you a bunch of "can't register dll" errors which I went ahead and said Ignore.  I mean, is the choice to Cancel going to get you somewhere?  Nope.
11.  Reboot.  Run msconfig again and put back all the stuff the way it was.  Reboot.
12.  Run Sonar.  If your stars are aligned, it will magically run.

Wasn't this a bunch of fun trying to figure out?

Nope.

Re: SONAR 2016.03 Install Fail 2016/08/13 19:50:54 (permalink)
OK many thanks to all who contributed to this thread. Upgrading Sonar to Platinum on Win 7 was one of the biggest pains in the butt as I have experienced in software installation, but VICTORY has been achieved! So, if you are in the same boat as was I, follow the steps outlined above, and of all things, patience will be your best friend. I had to leave my machine running over night at least 3 different times while "searching for updates" and "manually installing VS 2015 C++ redistributable" and after all that was finally solved "Extracting Files" went on hour after hour. On my 1st and 2nd attempt, I kept on cancelling thinking something had gone wrong & it was hung up...WRONG. Let it go..Go out for dinner & a movie, go to a concert, fall asleep & wake up the next AM & Viola! Surprise Surprise! It finally completed. The information in this thread will likely solve the problem as it did for me.

My hat's off to the folks who posted here with the solution, but not to Cakewalk. I have been an avid user since 1995's CW Pro Audio 3. The company's recent decision to not take tech support calls is a bad one in my opinion. I put in an email to tech support. By the time I finally get any "call" from them, I will likely have started a few new projects & be into an upgrade or two. BAD CHOICE CAKEWALK. I realize the situation....this product installation issues have pushed tech support calls into a "red zone", but I feel that we who have purchased this software & have continued to be loyal to it throughout the years (considering the numerous other softs available & competitively priced) deserve better treatment than this. Your company's decisions as far as how to deal with tech support is an unfortunate one, alienating many longtime supporters/users such as myself. Yes the product is a superior one, and that is why I put up with all this BS. I feel it is unfair to sell a product, and then when it doesn't work (unfortunately due to various factors including this insane MS Win 7 update fiasco) tell us to "get in line" SHAME ON YOU! So, as I stated earlier, thankfully this thread includes the info necessary to make Platinum install over Win 7. Be Patient & keep on it! Steve
