Sonar Platinum Crashes/Hangs when opening projects with plugins

Hi all,
Sonar Platinum has been crashing/hanging when I open any project with plugins. It does this 30 to 40% of the time (sometimes a project will open and sometimes it won't). I don't know how to find the offending plugin (if it is a plugin) and could use some help. The only indication I have there's a problem is when I try to open a project and Sonar just sits there with the mouse spinning but nothing happens...even after waiting 10 min. Then I'll try to close Sonar and will get the notification "Sonar is not responding", but there's no option to view a crash log or make a report.

I used AppCrashView and it found Sonar's "Stopped responding and was closed" logs but I don't understand what it's telling me. I'm posting the most recent log below in hopes someone can make heads or tails of it.

When a project 'does' open up everything is perfect and I can record and mix up to 48 tracks with a ton of Slate, Waves, UA and Soundtoys plugins. Sonar's CPU meter shows around 40% usage for a project that large (the first core shows a little higher than the rest). Other projects of 24 - 36 tracks shows much less CPU usage. The Ram and Hard Drive meters are negligible.

My system is: MacBook Pro i7-3615QM CPU @ 2,30GHz, 8 Gigs ram, Windows 10 (Bootcamp), UA Apollo thru Thunderbolt 1 connection, external Thunderbolt drives (Western Digital 2TB Black).

Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Reggie

Hold Shift when clicking to open the project which will enable "safe mode" so you can OK each plug that gets loaded.

Ok, now I get a solid crash when I close any project after entering "safe mode" (with all plugins disabled). It crashes over 50% of the time and it's faulting ucrtbase.dll (whatever this is). It's late so I'll google ucrtbase in the morning to find out more.

Thanks Brando for the "safe mode" clue.

If you have submitted a bug report for the crash please list the CWBRN number so we can see the dump file.
A crash in crtbase could indicate a bad install of the microsoft C runtime redistributables.

Am seeing pretty much the same issue in a windows environment (http://forum.cakewalk.com/Project-Issue-Failing-to-Load-in-Sonar-June-16-Plat-Version-m3439524.aspx).  Ran safe mode open, and it got me in to the project.

Was possibly the LRC Bus: GroovePlayer (i.e. the metronome sound) or 2C-Aether.  Teh again, maybe not.

This occurred even after I created the project in May Platinum, and had no issues until June was installed.  X3 opened them just fine, so, who knows?

Re: Sonar Platinum Crashes/Hangs when opening projects with plugins 2016/06/28 11:24:35 (permalink)
Microsoft provides a free program that will scan your system and look for missing or corrupted Windows system files. Here is a link to some information on running the System File Checker (sfc.exe) in an elevated Command Prompt window:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

What Noel was referring to is that application developers most often take advantage of bundles of Microsoft code, where their programs call routines that are in one of these bundles, and then the installer process will include the installation of the needed bundle of code their program will call.  These are what the Microsoft C++ Runtime Redistributable libraries are.  So, Noel is suggesting that one or more of those libraries are either missing or possibly corrupt.

You can see which ones you have installed on your system, by going to Control Panel and clicking on the link that says Uninstall a Program.  That will present a list of applications installed in your Windows environment, and the various versions of the Microsoft C++ Runtime Redistributable libraries will show up there - just scroll down the programs list and you will see a bunch of them one after the other - they will look SOMETHING like: "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022", etc.  (please note that in their typical wisdom, Microsoft changed the format of the naming of these over time, so there are variations - easy enough to see, and they ARE still all bunched together, because at least the front part of their naming conventions was consistent).

On one of my computers, that happens to run Windows 8.1 x64, I currently have 22 different Microsoft C++ Runtime Redistributable libraries installed.  They are not very big at all, so that isn't an issue, and their existence DOES aid developers.  Why Microsoft didn't deliver some kind of Windows Update mechanism to CONSOLIDATE/COMBINE older runtime libraries is a mystery, but it is what it is.

Anyways, I hope the above is helpful to you - that System File Checker utility program is pretty handy, to make sure Windows thinks it has all the files it needs - I have certainly used it a few times.

Best of it all to you - I am quite confident Noel and the others at Cakewalk can and will identify the issue causing this issue for you, and if indeed the root cause is either a missing or corrupt runtime library, they can give you the information needed to install or repair any such problematic runtime library.

Please attach the proper minidump files for the crashes - these files will be in your crash dump folder here:
    %APPDATA%\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\MiniDumps
We can't analyze anything useful from the text files you attached unfortunately.
While you wont get a dump file easily for a hang, you should get one for any crash.

Thanks for sending the dump files. There are two different kinds of crashes in your dumps.
One is a crash via the mackie control when its trying to send MIDI output to SONAR. Can you check if removing your mackie control from SONAR stops the crashing?
The second crash is on exit. We will investigate both of them.

Is your system connected to the internet? And could you try turning off analytics in the preferences to see if that changes your behavior?

I disconnected the Behringer X-touch (Mackie control) and turned off Analytics. So far all my projects are opening with no trouble. I'm still getting the occasional crash on close when entering "safe mode", but I see that a future update will solve this.

Is the X-touch unit itself causing the crash?

The crash on exit with Safe mode has been fixed for the 07 release.
We need to see why the X-touch is causing the crash. Could you perhaps attach a simplified project that causes the crash? No audio should be necessary. Please provide some steps for how you are configuring the control surface in SONAR as well in case there is something specific there which triggers the crash.

Hi Noel, I'll modify one of my projects (taking out the audio) and save it as a Test. Should I leave the plugins in there or delete them?

Hi, I've uploaded the Test Project, Test Project Assets and the Windows AppHang Report that was generated. There wasn't a MiniDumps file generated.

The Test project was made from an existing project but I deleted the audio and MIDI tracks. Everything else in the Test project is the same as the original. The Test and original projects both had AppHangs.
The X-Touch is plugged into one of the USB2 ports on my Plugable UD-3900 USB docking station. The docking station is plugged into one of the USB3 ports on my MacBook Pro. I am also using the display function of the USB hub. In an earlier test I performed, I disconnected the LED display and associated wiring from the USB hub - there was no change in outcome and Sonar continued to hang as previously stated.

The X-Touch is configured as "Mackie Control - 1" in Control Surfaces and the In and Out Ports are called "X-Touch". In MIDI Devices, "MIDIIN2 (X-Touch)" and "MIDIOUT2 (X-Touch)" are 'not' checked/selected.

When loading a project under normal circumstances, I'll see the mouse courser spin as everything loads up (which takes 10 to 30 seconds depending on the size of the project). The last thing that happens is the faders on the X-touch move into place and the little display windows fill in with track information along with the Now Time. When playing a project the faders and Now Time have excellent synchronization with Sonar.

When loading a project that hangs, I'll see the mouse courser spin as everything loads (same as normal). However, the faders on the X-touch never move into place and none of the display windows list any of the project details. You can wait ten minutes or more and the project never completes loading.

Let me know if more info is needed.

    hi Reg,

have you tried plugging the X touch direct in to the usb 2 port ?
midi control surfaces should never be run through usb hubs. theres just too many messages being sent to use a hub.
also, mixing usb 2 and usb 3 ports is not the greatest idea. I understand sometimes we are limited by our environments. but a small test will tell.

anyway, I hope this gets sorted for you soon. The X touch looks fascinating. I look forward to checking one out myself in the future (right now im happy with my Mackie Control  )
    good luck.

Plugging the X-touch direct into the computer seemed to work at first but it was wishful thinking. Sonar eventually hung same as before. Still no joy.

Hi there, don't want you to think we've abandoned you. The crash you were getting on close was fixed, but... with your project I notice that you're using slate VMR. I actually wasn't able to get the iLok License Manager to pick that plugin up (don't get me started...) but we do have a bug logged where some project persistence got messed up for that plugin (if it is one plugin...)

Anyway, in your original post you said it was any project with plugins that would exhibit this behavior, but I wonder if it's any project with Slate VMR? Probably isn't the case but I thought I'd ask just in case.

Hi John, my projects are jammed packed with Slate VMR: Tracks, Aux Tracks, Busses and the Mix Bus. I'm not sure if this helps but when I load an instance of VMR or any Slate plugin it does take longer for them to fully load than any other plugin I use.

Software: Sonar Platinum (via Bootcamp Windows 10 64-bit)
System: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012), 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, External WD Black 2TB HDD (via Thunderbolt)
Audio Interface: Universal Audio Apollo Duo (via Thunderbolt)
Peripherals: Plugable UD-3900 USB Docking Station, Behringer X-Touch, Midisport 8x8/s

Me too, i have been getting lots of crashes and blue screens from vmr 1.3 and forward. Try taking VMR out and opening the projects.

I haven't gotten blue screens... just freezes when a project opens up. VMR and the other Slate plugins have been working great, they just take a little longer to load up in the effect rack.

Hi there, don't want you to think we've abandoned you...

I'm still having freezes. Have you guys made any headway?

No, unfortunately. I can't repro with your project, but I haven't been able to get slate VMR working because the iLok license manager seems to hate me. I'll try again and let you know. The other big factor is that you're running on boot camp with some interesting peripherals, so even if the project loads for me on Windows it doesn't mean it will load with your setup.

You said you're still freezing - is this only in projects with slate VMR, or projects in general? If you're freezing consistently and don't mind trying without VMR I'd be interested in the results.

Also, is this something you've only started seeing recently? I see you've been a forum member since 2004, and I was wondering if this freeze was introduced in one of the recent updates as opposed to a long standing issue. If you can tell me when the issue started it will help narrow down the cause.

Sorry you're going through this, it must be frustrating being essentially blocked with your work for so long.

Do I understand you right that freeze happens with MackieControl only?

If yes, can you try to reproduce it with this: http://www.azslow.com/index.php/topic,250.0.html

I have seen freezes during project loading several times. More with MackieControl but also with my own plug-in. Till now I was unable to find the reason since that was never "stable freezing" for me.
