Craig,  How will your piezo amp sim cope with my Dark Tiger?

Try it and find out  Unfortunately my Dark Fire isn't here at the moment so I can't test. My FBX already has EQ in it to deal with the piezo sound, so it's not a good test. But I would suspect you'll find the amps helps.

Here is my Platinum experience, so far...

I installed Platinum yesterday, and the first thing I noticed is how much better (in terms of tonality, resolution, clarity) a project file originally built in X1 Producer sounds. ...and I'm referring specifically to simple playback - no additional mixing, equalization or effects applied. I'm saying simple playback sounds better in an apples-to-apples comparison than playing back the same file in X1.

I don't claim to have golden ears, but these improvements I'm hearing are not subtle. They're quite obvious.

Is anyone else hearing this, or could this be some kind of placebo effect I'm experiencing ?

That sounds pretty much impossible.  Digital waveforms are just digital, and plugins are simply software routines.  How could playback change?

I am "Five Foot Wall" on Spotify, Deezer, etc.  Platinum, Windows 7 64bit, AMD FX-6100 hex-core @3.8ghz, 8 gig ram (never use more than 5 gigs), Delta 44, UM-2

I agree with Greg. I do believe in the placebo effect though.  However it is possible that in some plugin or other area CW did do something that has improved something. That is highly unlikely though. Its far more likely that if you hear a difference its because its a placebo difference, one due to it being new.

Well, that's why I raised that possibility (placebo effect). But "impossible" ?  ...no, not impossible. After all, this was effectively an A/B test of one version against another, and who knows what changes, if any, have occurred between X1 and Platinum, such as the audio engine, and how it processes the audio and math. I'm sure those changes would be proprietary, and Cakewalk would be reluctant to discuss or disclose, but it does make me curious.

With all else being equal, it's hard to argue with the results of an A/B test.

Re: Sonar Platinum Experience 2015/02/04 16:07:53 (permalink)
I hesitate to rule out anything. I learned that when I set out to prove that playing back at 96 kHz didn't make an audible difference anyone could tell reliably. But in the process, I found that recording at 96 kHz could make a huge difference when working inside the box.

Who knows? My favorite story is when Eric Johnson said some effect sounded better with a particular battery and was laughed at. "Volts are volts, what an idiot ha ha." However...the internal impedance of a battery can vary significantly. If he was using an effect with poor power supply rejection, then using an alkaline or carbon-zinc battery could make an audible difference.

Also, your hearing changes over the course of a day. Your ears are more acute at night because the lack of natural light causes a lower degree of visual stimulus. So if you listened to an X1 project in the morning and an X3 project at night, the X3 one would likely sound better - because it actually would sound better.

We know much less about how the ear/brain combination works than we think...

Thanks for your response, Craig.
That's interesting about your hearing being more acute in the evening than earlier in the day. I'd never heard anything about that before now.
So, would you characterize it as things sounding 'better' in the evening, or 'more accurate' ?   ...or both ?

I'm afraid my Platinum installation was less that flawless.

First AD2 refused to download any new kits or kit pieces.  I'm stuck with the same three I had in X3 producer;
The console emulator and CA2 Leveling amp are both giving load errors,  and;
Any effect chain using the TH2 producer effect crashes with a message that "This effect is only available in Sonar X2 and above."
And that's just in the first 20 minutes of use.

  I did use the fancy new management console to install - maybe that was a mistake?

Just starting the Sonar Platinum experience...upgrading from X3e
Going through the Command Center download now, while its all happily downloading (46% at the moment), I've got a Windows/Internet Explorer "There is a problem with this website's security certificate" error/warning!!

I'll see where this ends up and hope it fixes itself up when the download finishes - but a bit disconcerting and not the smoothest start!

  I got a response from Support this morning regarding AD2 .  The suggested a VST re-scan, which I will try tonight, although I'm doubtful because the XLN installer doesn't show the new kits as being present, so I doubt it's a scan problem.  Nothing back from support on the other issues yet.

 I wonder if it's a widows 8 issue caused by where they are placings some downloads ?   I know that Dimension will not register properly unless you run it in administrator mode.

I did get the AD2 update to work this evening:   I was operating the XLN installer incorrectly:  Basically, it asks you to selct three kits, three beatpacks and three single instruments.  To install these after selection you MUST click on the button marked "Get Deal" next to each group.  If you click on the button that  reads "Continue Installation"   (ironically) it doesnt install anything.

On further investigation, none of my pro channel modules are working in Platinum.  They are still working in X3e Producer.

Support asked me to send the minidump files, but it's not producing any.  As an alternative they asked for windows process manager dumps of each failure , but these are all in excess of 330Mb, and my Internet provider will not allow me to send them as e-mail attachments   Things appear to be at a standstill, but at least X3 Producer is still working, so no panic yet.

Thanks Alex.  I'll give it a try, although support imply that they can't rout anything to the proper tech without me using the same message header they used , so I'm not sure if I can get them to Joey Adams, the guy I was working with by this route.

Re: Sonar Platinum Experience 2015/02/08 20:25:06 (permalink)
Ok -  I spent the weekend investigating what was going on, and found the following:

[1] The things that weren't working were Cakewalk 32-bit plugins (Breverb etc) and all pro channel modules

[2] Other 32 bit plugins were working

[3] My X3e installation was 32 bit, running on a 64 bit operating system

[4] The "command center" has installed the 64 bit version of Platinum without asking.

Evidently Platinum 64 will not run the 32 bit version of Cakewalk plugins via the bridge .  Now, this should not be a problem because the options under VST Settings to hide duplicate 32 bit plugins and to substitute 64 bit plugins for 32-bit ones were both  checked  But it wasn't working.   Although the platinum install has the 64 bit version of Breverb in its vst folder. the FX list was still showing the 32-bit version, and still attempting to load the 32-bit version on existing projectcts.

It was also attempting to load the 32 bit pro channel modules .  Often I would get an error that "this preset can only be used in sonar X2 and above."

THE FIX;

[1] Removed the X3e 32 bit VST directory from the scan list and re-scanned - all cakewalk plugins and pro channel modules then worked

[2] Replaced the X3e 32 bit VST directory in the scan list, but AFTER the 64 bit directory re-scanned again

[3] now it shows the 64 bit version of the Cakewlak plugins,  and my 32-bit non Cakewalk plugins.  Everything works

[4] Phew!

Install was quick and painless; I actually like the C3 method better.  Picked upright where I left off in the middle of a project started on X3e.  For the first time I left the previous install in place since it didn't seem to claim too much additional SSD space.  So far, after a couple days of constant use have found no probs and plays well with NI 10 Ult, Ozone 6 and various soft synths like Omnisphere, Trilian, Iris2, Absynth, etc. Melodyne Editor registration was not a problem (unlike last time),AD2 likewise.  This is really how it should be-it is such a pleasure to have all this creative power at my fingertips and not have to even think about the process. All totally transparent, immersive, unencumbered and fun.  Thanks!  My only gripe is I still don't get any newsletter, update email or anything to even indicate that this release existed.  I've linked my accounts, etc- In all the years I don't think I've ever received any thing from Cakewalk, not even a postcard;)
