Sonar Platinum Experience

Having upgraded to Sonar Platinum last week, I'm delighted to say that from the initial installation right through to getting down to some work, the experience has been flawless.

Over the last few days I've been working on a couple of production projects which have incorporated an wide array of virtual synths and VST signal processors and each session has run without the slightest glitch. Melodyne Editor and Vocal Sync have been very well behaved and the UI enhancements are quickly becoming a natural part of my workflow.

I do note that a few users have experienced problems and I know how frustrating that can be, but I can only refer to my own experiences with the new version.

Credit where credit's due, it's excellent.

Me three. Platinum seems to be as good or better than X3e. Not an easy act to follow! I'm particularity loving the new PRV.

i've been a cakewalk user since pro audio 9 & upgrade the 1st. new version is available !  i love platinum & the the idea of always being up to date & if these yoyo's that are apposed to it had any brain cells the yearly cost is exactly the same as before & what has been included since the gibson merge has been astronomical & you will see you will be getting many things now that you paid extra for before ! the power of gibson has improved the the product extremely & i was afraid the price would soar & that is not the case !  support is with you in minutes & that was not the case before ! & they made sure all my store products were included in my account 3 times & told me i have the larfgest account they ever saw so that must tell you something !  a full purchase is $100 more than pre gibson but melodyne is worth much more than that !  what do you pay for your over priced smartphones (ex. apple)  now there is a rip off 1  & THE REAL RIP OFF IS PT. NEW VERSION EVERY YEAR & OUTDATED TO BOOT PLUS THEY CHARGE YOU FOR EVERYTHING & I MEAN EVERYTHING.... I WAS A DEDICATED M-AUDIO 1010 USER & OWNED 6+ UNITS & THEY COULDN'T EVEN ANSWER AN E-MAIL WITH OUT PAYING UP FRONT !  WITH CHANGED ME TO MOTU & MOTU IS GREAT & PT IS NOTHING BUT A FOLLOWER THEY COME ALONG ABOUT 5 YRS AFTER SONAR DOES & SONAR GETS NO CREDIT !   I HAVE ALL THESE 1010 & M-AUDIO WOOLD SEND FREE REPLACEMENT PARTS AFTEER AVID THAT WAS NOT THE CASE !    SO WHO EVER SAYS THEY ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF IS EITHER MENTALLY HANDI CAPPED OR CHALLENGED SHOULD I SAY !  BECAUSE A YEARLY SUBSCRIPTION IS EXAXTLY DOWN TO THE PENNY THE SAME PRICE & RUNS SMOOTH AS CAN BE !  PLUS TYHE EXTRAS LIKE ADDICTIVE DRUMMER & MELODYNE ARE VERY COSTLY & YOU GET THESE INCLUDED !   SO THINK OF YOUR SMARTPHONE & THE COST & WHAT DO YOU GET A BIG HEADACHE & CONSTANTLY BEING DISTRACTED FROM YOU RECORDING PROJECTS OR CLIENTS YOU ARE WORKING ON !   WHEN USE YOUR BRAINS FOR A GOOD FINISHED RECORDING PROJECT TURN OF YOU OVER PRICED SMARTPHONES & JUST SEE WERE SONAR WILL TAKE YOU & I CAN ASSURE YOU IT WILL BE TO HIGH PLACES !  IF YOU HARD NOSED PEOPLE COULD DO MATH & FIGURED OUT WHAT IS INCLUDED IT IS WAY ABOVE WHAT YOU ARE PAYING !  IF THE PRICE DOES RACISE ABIT WHO CARES WHEN YOU GET A STABLE SYSTEM THAT CAN DO ANYTHING FAST !  MY OPINION YOU PEOPLE HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES MIGHJT BE YOUR SYSTEMS BEING OBSOLETE OR MAYBE YOU HAVE THE ABILITY OF NOT KNOWING ATHING ON SETTING IT UP CORRECTLY !  LIKE ALL THESE BONE HEADS THAT THINK THEY HAVE THE SOFTWARE NOW CAN RECORD THEMSELVES & BLOW YOU OFF & IN MOST CASES THEY COME BACK WHEN THEY FIND OUT IT TAKES MORE THAN THE SOFTWARE !  YOU NEED THE EQUIPMENT PLUS THE KNOWLEDGE & IF YOU CAN'T FIGURE OUT IT COSTS THE SAME I MUST FIGURE YOU HAVE NO ABILITY TO BE RECORDING IN THE 1ST PLACE !  I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY MANUFACTURES I JUST HAVE 34+ YRS EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY & I SEE SONAR BEING THE BEST OUT THERE PRE & POST GIBSON !   GIBSON HAS BEEN GREAT & JUST WAIT UNTIL TASCAM IS THROWN IN THERE THEY WILL TAKE OVER THE INDUSTRY !    SO GOOD LUCK GETTING RIPPED OFF ON YOUR SMART PHONES & THE BRAIN CELLS THEY KILL AT THE SAME TIME & MAYBE THAT IS WHY SOME CAN'T FIGURE IT STILL COSTS THE SAME FOR AN EXCELLENT ARRAY OF PRODUCTS !   I'LL ALWAYS BE A FAN !

The install was painless. Looking forward to putting it through its paces.

I did not want to like it, infact I took the monthly option ready to bail out after a month.

Looks like I may have shot myself in the foot as it's growing on me by the minute .  I was honestly expecting crashes, numerous bugs and the general feeling of having a huge christmas tree with half the lights not working.

At my age being wrong and admitting to it is no big deal, I have to take my hat off to Cake as I do believe they have got this one right. OK now where are the up-dates?

Nothing wrong with being cautious Gerry.  Better than jumping in with both feet and finding out it actually IS full of bugs and crashes constantly.

My upgrade was as boring as it could possibly be.  I was about to start a recording session with my daughter for another college project.  I told her to wait a while, go make some tea, I have a couple of upgrades to do...
By the time she got back I'd downloaded C3, downloaded and installed Sonar and was part way through the Anderton FX.  The whole thing took a few minutes, not hours like before.
I load it and we did the afternoon session using it.  No problems at all.

Here's a bug I found in Platinum.
When I split 3 or 4 tracks of vocal comps to edit, at some point without warning, it will separate all the split edits and space them out randomly from 1 to 4 1/2 measures, thus obliterating the timing of the performances.
Found this little quirk after I'd saved.

It takes one to know one, and vice versa.

Glad you are having good experiences with Platinum. There are many little improvements beneath the hood that that marketing copy can't really cover. When you add them all up it makes a perceivable difference. I will try and outline a few of the changes in a blog post when I get a little time. I have to go back to the code to find all the details since I can't remember lol :)
We're already working on the next update which will have fixes for some of the user reported workflow issues and some cool stuff from Craig. It should be here this month. Its been a crazy since we have to deal with shipping SONAR plus three upcoming products so its been an insane start to the year!

Thanks Karyn I had a couple of blips on the install but I did have the antivirus running first time around so that might have been the cause also like many others I had trouble getting my head around the AD install but apart from that smooth as silk. But as you say super quick oh any idea when we are getting a downloadable manual or have I missed something LOL

No rush on the updates Noel as I have more than enough to get my old head around for the moment, tomorrow will be fine :-). I came from 7 Producer to Platinum so the change for me is even more amazing I think you should all be very proud of this one.

Gerry X3 was an outstanding release. This one is only following in it foot steps.

You do seem to be able to adjust to the new GUI and that is a good thing.

I'm really glad to hear the priority for the first update is the workflow issues and any additional bug fixes. Traditionally the first update after a release is bug fixes but if there's extra thrown in, so much the better. I can wait a month for new features and I suspect others are in the same situation.

And to confirm, yes I do have some cool stuff! I've already mentioned the Acoustic Piezo amp. I tested it out at Gibson with about a half dozen different guitars with piezo pickups (the downside is now I want a Hummingbird, oh well), and the difference is night and day. I should definitely record some audio examples. The object of the amp is that when you plug the guitar in, it sounds like an engineer spent an hour patching in rack effects and tweaking.

I also have a new effect for the Anderton Collection, but I'll let that be a surprise...and some other stuff as well.

BTW don't know if anyone noticed, but a lot of the Soft Synth track icons have been replaced by ones I did that I think are more readable. Noel is right, there are a zillion little fixes and changes "under the hood." That is why people are having such good experiences with the program.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

This piezo amp sim is of particular interest to me. I spent a lot of my time trying to track acoustic guitars and mandolins, etc via their piezo pickups and never really liked the results (vs my microphones). The option to use them and be pleased, seems like "wish fulfillment"! How cool!

Same here, hence the amp.

I've also created presets for the ProChannel EQ optimized for a variety of Gibson acoustics. I played them for some folks from Acoustic division and they were pretty blown away at how good their guitars could send. They work with other acoustics too, but you have to try the different presets to see which is the best match...the Gibson EQs name the actual guitars. I assume these will go to members at some point.
