So Karl is in a video for X2 which is not released (X2 that is, as well as the vid).

How can that be? Does he have a time machine?

I'm hoping it comes with an in depth tutorial on setting up a screen set for using Audio Snap on 3 takes of 12 tracks of a live drum kit.

    I need help with that.

Nice job Karl/FBB. Just purchased this - but - it looks like it is also a pre-order - was hoping to get a glimpse of X2 ahead of the main event. Any idea when the video will be released?

Evening all....... in case anyone is wondering how, why, when, I was approached by Chris Hawkins from SWA a while ago asking whether I'd like to author this video. Oh the power of youtube.....

It didn' take too much thinking about either.

The original idea was a two to three hour video but as a program the size of Sonar was always going to be difficult to do justice in that time, it sort of developed into the monster length that it is now.

    Can you say Beta Tester?

I obviously had an advance copy arranged via Chris Hawkins of SWA, I don't think that qualifies me as a tester though.

I assume there's a dash of sacrcasm there but I'll answer for others that may be wondering. There's over 40 minutes on Audiosnap dealing mainly with live drums, some a full kit, others kick, snare, and overheads left & right. Only one take though and although screensets get a mention of course, I didn't build one especially for audiosnap. I just used my general purpose editing screenset.

The videos are extremely detailed and although I'm sure even with nine hours there is some stuff that isn't covered, certainly as much as I can has been and in great detail.

It covers from the very basics of set up, basic routing, etc through to covering the more advanced tools and uses. Hopefully there's something in it for all those that get it.

Weighing in at nine hours ? That's beyond comprehensive and nearly exhaustive :)

Good luck with it, I may get it myself once a few reviews are in.

    :-)

Was it the first, or second time, you worked with a live drum kit?

    :-)

It seems like only yesterday that you were watching groove 3 videos and asking how to do it.

    :-)

Did you cover time aligning the snare and kick with the OH?

Good on you... I hope you make gobs and gobs of money!

    best regards,

Yeah nine hours was a bit of a shock..... "Insanely detailed" was one description I've heard used which was meant as a compliment I think. What can I say, I like the sound of my own voice.

I obviously hope it goes down well but I certainly know that I gave it my all, so I'm happy with it regardless. I'd hate to have done a half hearted job thinking I could have done that better, or this better. It is what it is and hopefully others will like it and find it useful.

Thank you very kind. I'm hoping I'll earn enough to get a trackday from it. I missed most of this summer's track action.... stuck in a studio preparing scripts for videos. Although I was out on track yesterday and aching like hell today, I think I'm getting old....

Just to be clear, this video isn't a "techniques" or "how to mic live drums" video. The live drums were used to demonstrate audiosnap and there's no reference to how they were recorded.

It's a video on how to set up use, and get the best out of Sonar. I've been doing that everyday since version 2.

FWIW, I have some idea how much work it is to produce video. It sounds like you did a massive amount of work.

I'll bet it's a whole lot better than the official Cakewalks AudioSnap videos where they teach us how to take a kick drum track and use Audio Snap to make a kick drum sample for Session Drummer.

    Good on you!!!

    best,
    mike

Yes it was a bit of a shock once I got going and realised how much work there was involved. Obviously my youtube stuff is pretty much fire up program, talk and work with little or no planning involved and certainly no structre. This was a whole different ball game.
I'll bet it's a whole lot better than the official Cakewalks AudioSnap videos where they teach us how to take a kick drum track and use Audio Snap to make a kick drum sample for Session Drummer.

I just put into video the way I've fathomed out/learned how to use it through a lot of trial and error and help from these forums. (Which is pretty much the way the whole video is) The preperation of tracks prior to using Audiosnap is very important in my experience, especially on live takes with studio chit chat at the front etc. and to avoid the dreaded "Tempo out of range" message

I think I covered most of it, clip preperation, clip map editing, extracting and applying tempos, quantising, adjusting timing while maintaining phase relationships (using both methods), drum replacement. etc.
    Good on you!!!

    best,
    mike

You have a great approach and you have a good sense of what would be of interest to the viewer - including some less obvious features - probably the very ones you had to work/research to uncover the workings of. I appreciate everything you do for the SONAR community. Hopefully this turns into a great opportunity for you. Congratulations and I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the video. (X2 too of course). Thanks FBB

Thanks again. I've certainly tried to cover some of the stuff that doesn't get mentioned very often.

I've yet to see the final video but assuming nothing much has changed from the raw files (which I'm fairly sure it hasn't) as well as the more obvious areas I also cover.................Creating drum maps, Creating instrument files, creating FX chains, and in depth look at grouping including creating custom groups among many other areas.

Most of the individual videos are between 8 - 15ish minutes (the matrix demo is one of the longer ones) but there are some subjects that have multiple part videos. Time was most definitely a secondary consideration to detail. I thought it more important to explain something fully rather than brush over parts to fit a time frame.

I hope that was the right decision, there's several months of my blood, sweat, and tears in them and I sincerley hope you enjoy and get something from them.

@SWA: Any reason why you couldn't chop up that video into manageable segments like everyone else? One 9-hr. long video does not make it easy to navigate.

@SWA: Any reason why you couldn't chop up that video into manageable segments like everyone else? One 9-hr. long video does not make it easy to navigate.

I believe it already is but some players don't see the chapters. I've been informed that Quicktime does though.
