ORIGINAL: bitflipper Julianna, I listened to one of your songs on reverbnation and then on soundclick. What a difference! The reverbnation player sounded absolutely dreadful, with such annoying artifacts I couldn't listen for long. I'd always thought SoundClick quality was poor, but it's still better than ReverbNation or MySpace. I'll miss SoundClick. It's true, butflipper... When I signed up for Reverbnation, I was really just testing the waters and seeing what was out there. But yeah. Sound quality bites. To be perfectly honest, though, I actually prefer the Reverbnation site far and above that of Soundclick. Soundclick is kind of barren and bland, where at least Reverbnation has a nice interface (I'm an "easily-seduced-by-GUI" kind of Girl, what can I say?). Reverbnation also has a million different stats to view in charts or graphic form. Hocus Pocus? Maybe, but I think it's purty. BTW, I'm not actually all that stat-crazy... but a no-name housefrau such as myself must find her kicks somewhere, eh? I just listened to a song from the songs forum this eve and noted that it was on yet another music site... Muscisomethingorother... thought it sounded pretty good, but I don't have your ears, mind you. I'll have to try and figure that out... (I sure hope you listened to one of the better tunes) (edited for clarity)

Texrat - I set up an account on indabamusic.com - hoping to get in on some collabs there but it hasn't happened yet. I do keep an eye on their contests and hope to jump in on one of those. I will probably bite the bullet and pay for the full mixposure account. It's a good community there and the streaming audio quality is very good. I'll keep my soundclick site too since it's free - the main thing I really like about soundclick is the stations. When I hear great songs that people post on soundclick that may not be available for download, I can add them to my station and not have to go hunting for them.

Well I guess it safe to say that the SOundclick staff are a legend in their own mind. Really isn't it childish to worry about where you stand on the soundclick charts? I'd be more interested on being on the the Billboard charts. Actually I'd be more concerned with making money with my music rather than chart standings. Someone at soundlcick needs to get a clue. I just canceled my VIP account. Who needs it anyway?

When I hear great songs that people post on soundclick that may not be available for download, I can add them to my station and not have to go hunting for them. Unfortunately, now you will. Because of Soundclick's current policy, your station links will now become broken if any of those artists update their mixes. I listened to "Without a Trace" and "Bulletproof" on mixposure.com. Sound quality was definitely better than MySpace or ReverbNation, but I still clearly heard the telltale artifacts of MP3 re-encoding. I brought up two other randomly-selected tunes to verify that it wasn't a flaw in your recording - it's not. The others had that same annoying high-frequency phasing. I will say this about mixposure.com, though: the overall quality of the material seemed superior to soundclick, based solely on the fact that I played 4 songs in a row that didn't suck! Soundclick won't yield that kind of consistency, more like play 20 to find 1 good one. So is the mixsposure model the same as SoundClick? IOW, do you get limited file sizes and lower-quality files for a free account, but are allowed larger files and higher bitrates with a paid account? Is yours a paid account? EDIT: mixposure is indeed similar to soundclick, except more complicated. Instead of just free vs. VIP accounts, mixsposure has no fewer than SEVEN types of accounts, ranging in price from $30 per year to $135.00 per year. A free account is very limited. Maximum of 5 songs. But you can go up to 192kb/s, which is much better than any other free account I've found. (But why do they sound so bad? I'd expect more from that bitrate). All of the paid levels allow 320kb/s files but still impose limits on the number of songs and the total disk space used. A paid account is less expensive than soundclick, but free accounts are very limited.

Hey Bit... just as an experiment, I created a page on purevolume.com. Same songs, but only allowed 4 in the player (I hope the one you listened to is on it!). Is it any better than reverbnation?

Soundclick obviously know of the abuse? Do they not know who the offenders are? Why not just delete the accounts of the abusers? It would be amazing to see a boycott large enough to make them think twice but i doubt that`ll happen. The only reason i used Soundclick is the easy update, when your trying to get help and fixing mixes it`s essential. So i guess soundclick is basically useless to me now and i`ll just have to figure something else out.

"Blue Water". The hi-hat, rhythm guitar and organ exhibit particularly painful high-frequency artifacts, as do a few "S"s in the vocal. I'd like to hear the original, uncompressed version. How about sending me a copy? PM me for directions to my FTP server if you wanna do that.

Looking in HttpFox the content stream is only 2MB, which to me means low bitrate (see attachment)...

I think my pottery looks like my music sounds, but probably not everyone can see that. :) Ouch, Keith. Before you hurt yourself (please don't, the song's not worth it), understand that I'm no pro! And, I've really only begun in mixing.... Only a year or so... so, I don't know that you should hold Reverbnation entirely responsible. However, I'll be sending the wav to bitflipper, so we can let him be the judge. Probably I should not have been the test subject.... Alas.

I was listening to purevolume... it's not a problem with the mix necessarily as there are identifiable "quality artifacts" in the playback itself... it sounds like poorly encoded audio.

ORIGINAL: Tolgar Posted: 15 Jul 2009 01:47 pm Thanks for your input. While the draft/final version does sound interesting, I think it also has some drawbacks. So what I like the best so far is the following: - Activate the song update feature again (obviously no protest there) - Songs that are updated... ...+ are immediately removed from the charts of that day ...+ lose the current charts point ...+ keep all other information (description, lyrics,...) ...+ keep all statistical data ...+ will still play if you posted a link to the previous version on any other site or board This way it won't be possible to gain any advantage for the charts. And it still makes this feature available for all artists that like to update the song version from time to time. ORIGINAL: Tolgar Posted: 15 Jul 2009 10:14 pm Okay, we have now reactivated the song upload feature. As discussed here, the song is immediately removed from the charts of that day. Thank you all for your input! You have to be impressed with the outcome!

It DOES mean something in real world terms: I have to admit - i met a girl in a bar who was asking me about being a musician. I'm sure one of the reasons she came home with me was because I was in the "top 5 in the indie music charts." I wasn't lying exactly...

Julianna, thanks--that's cool! You're quite talented. Those cut away bowls are great, and the vases are just beautiful! Do you have a pottery studio (is that what you call it?) right in your home? How fun! About the PM box--you'll just need to delete the messages every time they come so it doesn't get full. If it's set up right, the messages will come to your email inbox anyway, so you don't need to keep them in your PM box.

Late last night, SoundClick reinstated the update feature. Reading their forum thread on the subject was entertaining. A couple of guys were trying to defend the practice that led to shutting down the feature. One claims there are actually buyers for "beatz" willing to pay "$600 - $1000" for a single beat. Gimme a break. So the good news is it looks like we won't have to find a replacement for SoundClick. However, I still intend to explore alternatives. So far, I have not found any hosting site that offers better sound quality for a free account than SoundClick. But the search continues... EDIT: Here are a couple of sites that list music-hosting sites - IndieGuide.com - Music Hosting Services and Web Sites for Musicians

While perusing SoundClick alternatives, I came across these interesting possibilities: cherrypeel.com "a community where music fans have the power to decide what is worth listening to" Typical sound quality, some high-frequency artifacts Here's a sample of a pretty good band out of Victoria, BC that I discovered on cherrypeel.com: Immaculate Machine Alonetone.com Non-commercial, "a damn fine home for musicians". Has no player, just downloads, material is weak, the forum is pretty dead. But I love their philosophy. Free, no advertisements. Jamendo All material is covered by the Creative Commons license, and only free downloads are allowed, no selling. A great philosophy, but I didn't immediately find a lot of good listening material there. F3music Free account is rather restrictive: 10Mb file size limit (same as SoundClick), 128kb/s (same as SC), and 30Mb total storage limit (SC has no limit). $7.95 a month (lower than SC) if you want to upload high-quality files. The search continues, but at this time I have to say SoundClick still offers the best free service.

Here's another: Boost Independent Music. This one seems most like SoundClick in mission and format, except that you apparently do not have the option of giving away songs for free. At least, I've seen no freebees yet. Best thing about BIM is the sound quality is good. I assume that since all titles are for sale, they encourage high-quality MP3s.
