Soundcloud interface -- CW Advertisement plastered on my track

Taking a cue from the iphone, I suppose, CW thinks I'm going to advertise their wares on Soundcloud?
"Created with. Sonar" gets plastered on the track I uploaded directly from Sonar Platinum.   Can't be deleted, as far as I can tell.     This is not acceptable behaviour!!     If there is a way to eliminate this, please let me know.

https://soundcloud.com/williamcopper/moses-33-how-long   here's the example.   And the "Created with SONAR" ad is simply false.  It was "uploaded" with sonar.

If you didn't create it with Sonar why upload it with Sonar? Either way you used Sonar so I reckon it's fair enough.

That "Created by SONAR" link goes to an ad for SONAR X1 Producer, so maybe they should update that.

Meh, it should be opt-in. I always bounce to mp3 then upload, never had a problem. However, it's BS if the tool signature is automagically inserted without your consent or control. What if Photoshop inserted a visible watermark on everything modified by the tool? Same difference. Vogue would be pissed. Not cool!

I can't see the 'Created by Sonar'. I agree with you that software you pay for, shouldn't then advertise itself, (unless they pay you back for that), and should be an option. I'm just not seeing where it says it on you Soundcloud

EDIT: Now I see it, been a long day.

So, perhaps all the software I used should advertise itself?    It would fill the soundcloud page.

Well, he says the song wasn't created in SONAR. So he would have needed to transfer it to SONAR to upload it. Why not just upload it without transferring?

Yeah, that seems like the simplest and most elegant solution. Any web browser can upload to Soundcloud.

Re: Soundcloud interface -- CW Advertisement plastered on my track 2015/03/22 16:09:09 (permalink)
I suppose if it said "Uploaded from Sonar" I would not be so offended.   But I created it, using a wide variety of software tools including sonar.    This was a trial upload, using sonar; I've uploaded hundreds of things before without using Sonar.   So ... I know how to do it, was trying a slight shortcut (don't have to transfer it to my usual upload computer).     The other thing that offends me, is somehow, even though I pay Soundcloud, they have let Cakewalk insert an ad, and an ad I can not defeat as far as I can tell,  into MY promotional efforts.   Got a support email in to Soundcloud, we'll see how they respond.

I understand that you want control over how you promote your efforts, but if it bothers you that much, why not just take it down and re-post it without using SONAR? There aren't many views and no comments, so you won't lose anything significant. That will at least take care of your immediate issue while you wait for SoundCloud to address your long-term concerns.

That said, I do agree it's unnecessary for that link to be included. However, there may have been some kind of quid pro quo because Cakewalk promotes SoundCloud in their marketing materials.

Re: Soundcloud interface -- CW Advertisement plastered on my track 2015/03/22 17:25:18 (permalink)
Obviously there are two issues here.

One is that someone might not like to have an advertisement automatically inserted by an application. That is easily solved by not using the application at all, or by using a kludge to avoid having the advertisement attached if you do use it.

The second is the resentment of the questionable ethics and mindset of the application developer who designs this behavior into the product. Most of us would consider this a mark of an adware if not a crapware product, and would give it the disrespect it deserves, even while taking the little extra effort required to do the workaround manually. If Cakewalk does not want to engender that resentment and loss of respect, they can simply not write the crap into the code.

I don't really give a rip how he created it, it is lame, bs and troublesome that Sonar inserted something into the file...what other kinds of crap is this program doing? The more and more I see this kind of non-professional bs from the bakers, the more and more inclined I am to take my 15 years of being a faithful Cakewalk user and go somewhere else...this is unprofessional to say the least.

I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

Re: Soundcloud interface -- CW Advertisement plastered on my track 2015/03/22 17:36:48 (permalink)
Remember, the SoundCloud direct upload feature was added with X1, and has been pointed out, the link hasn't been updated since then. The company was under different ownership and had a different project manager. When I wanted to use SoundCloud to upload an audio example for Gibson, I asked Cakewalk for a contact and they said they hadn't talked to SoundCloud in years and didn't know who I could talk to.

Instead of railing against this on the assumption that some evil person at Cakewalk is currently inserting "crapware" into the program, it might make sense to find out whether anyone - at either Cakewalk or SoundCloud - even knows it's there. It's not on the audio examples in the Cakewalk blog. As far as I know this is the first time this has been brought up since X1 was introduced, so I doubt the issue was on anyone's radar at Cakewalk.

Contacting SoundCloud won't be enough. You need to contact Cakewalk as well since presumably, the code is buried somewhere in SONAR.

While I agree with the sentiment in general, it seems to me like the "created with" is an existing tag in the file and was simply filled with "Sonar". I don't really consider that adware although obviously you need to have a setting to turn it off. It's like them filling out the "creation date" box for you.
Or like standard email signatures saying "sent from my iOS/Android device".

The real "crime" here seems to be not having an option to turn it off, which could be a simple oversight.

I appreciate the support, and agree that Cakewalk would/should not intentionally distort my uploads by inserting their own adware.    Am still waiting for a response from Soundcloud, how a "pro unlimited" user like me should have to suffer this indignity.

Whilst I agree yor point that it shouldn't really be there - it's hardly "plastered"across your page is it - it took me three looks to even see it and using words like "suffer" and "indignity" is more than a little OTT and precious IMHO. It's a minor annoyance at worst, but on the other hand because of this thread your page has probably had far more views/plays than you ever would have gotten without it, so indirectly they did you a favour.

I don't think it's a minor annoyance, it is branding inserted into art, it detracts from the desired affect and is distracting...there is no real reason for it to be there, it's a bit like the brush company demanding their logo be in your painting somewhere, or Dewalt inserting an ad on your finished furniture who gives a rip what tools were used it is not a platform that Cakewalk should exploit...which the "inserted ad" does...I get that Craig has a vested interest into where his bread gets buttered but this is a philosophical issue for me at some point get out of the way and let the artist create.

Maybe you should be angry with Soundcloud.
The link does not go to Sonar/Cakewalk.
It goes to the Soundcloud App store. Alongside Sonar, other vendors are listed.
Soundcloud is extracting meta-data from the file and using it for their own purposes.

Re: Soundcloud interface -- CW Advertisement plastered on my track 2015/03/23 00:18:03 (permalink)
To echo williamcopper, yeah, what's with the Sonar link? TO echo Paulo, I never noticed it til now and I had to hunt a bit (so less obnoxious than the Apple ad, see below). To add to RobertB, it IS added by SoundCloud after upload, although how much in cahoots with Roland (who set up the deal) is hard to say. Looking at the other "similar Apps" in SoundCloud app store, I find that they have their App links "Created with ...." on users' files, same as Sonar, so it's not just a SoundCloud/Cakewalk(Roland) arrangement. I recall when the Soundcloud link came out on Sonar, I noticed that other apps were suddenly touting their links at just the same time. I suspect SoundCloud did the rounds and tried to hook up a bunch of vendors by offering them a "free" set of keys to the kingdom, so to speak, to make it easy to integrate SoundCloud into the products. To sweeten the deal, SC (I'm tired of typing SoundCloud, so "SC" means SoundCloud, okay by you?) probably offered a tie-in to their app store.

Haha, "Created by ..." kind of matches with the other ads "plastered" at the same moment: the admonishment to "Go Pro", the Apple AppStore ad, the GooglePlay ad, etc. The Sonar pitch kind of gets lost in the noise, y'know? You get what you pay for. Get rid of the Sonar link? Okay, that's one down, how many more links and ads and distractions to go? Williamcopper, I hear you loud and clear, so (coincidentally) I'm actively looking into moving off of corporate sites altogether and putting all my creative stuff on my own site (even the videos, which won't be a snap, but I'll like myself more once I do it). I'm looking at your SC page now, williamcopper. You'd be MUCH better served (as would a lot of us) with your own page. Your tracks (I love chamber music) sound way much better than that boring-big-box-retailer SC will ever make them look!

I unfortunately took what William Copper said at face value (hey, I can't fact-check everything), but RobertB is right - the link does not go to Cakewalk but to SoundCloud's app gallery. So complain to them. And to consider a templated SoundCloud page as "art" strikes me as silly. The art is, at least in theory, in the music.

And by the way, I don't know if you read EULAs, but a lot of sample libraries and sampled instruments require a credit. I don't know if Mr. Copper uses libraries that require credit or not, but he might want to check to see if he himself is infringing on another artist's rights by violating the terms of the sample library's agreement.

I get that Craig has a vested interest into where his bread gets buttered...

I can only assume your reason for making that statement is because you didn't bother to read my posts.

For the record, my bread is buttered, as it has been throughout my entire career, by the people who enjoy what I contribute, the music I make, and the constructive comments and information I provide to help people make better music or solve problems. Companies hire me to help their users because it's something I do well. Like the following, where I offered a foolproof and simple way for Mr. Copper to excise those three words in teeny type from his page (and I was the ONLY person to offer a solution to his issue at the time I posted):

"Obvious solution: don't upload it from Sonar."

In case that wasn't sufficiently clear, given that he didn't comment or say something like "Good idea, I'll do that so the text isn't on there," I added the following:

"I understand that you want control over how you promote your efforts, but if it bothers you that much, why not just take it down and re-post it without using SONAR? There aren't many views and no comments, so you won't lose anything significant. That will at least take care of your immediate issue while you wait for SoundCloud to address your long-term concerns.

"That said, I do agree it's unnecessary for that link to be included. However, there may have been some kind of quid pro quo because Cakewalk promotes SoundCloud in their marketing materials."

Oh yeah Psychobillybob, that's really shilling for the man! Jeez.

And in case Mr. Copper needed more advice, I said in my next post:

"Contacting SoundCloud won't be enough. You need to contact Cakewalk as well since presumably, the code is buried somewhere in SONAR."

Of course, now that I realize the link connects to SoundCloud, not Cakewalk, what I said is much less relevant but you can hardly call my advising him to contact Cakewalk (as well as what I said above) as looking out for Cakewalk and not its users. I think anyone with even the most basic reading comprehension skills would agree.

One last thing...defining the "Created by SONAR" tag as adware (search the term) would be disputed by virtually anyone who has any knowledge of online marketing. But that's a whole other issue.

FYI, from the VSL FAQ about licensing:

Do I have to credit this product if I use it on a recording?
With your purchase of a Vienna Instruments Collection, you agree to use the following wording in any credits or liner notes accompanying the music recording, be it a music CD, cassette, or soundtrack compilation: “Orchestral samples included in this recording from the Vienna Symphonic Library”. Screen credit for film and television use is not required, but highly appreciated.

I think Mr. Copper might want to review the EULAs for the instruments he's using; he might be required by law to include a lot more words than just "Created in SONAR."

More like required by contract, "required by law" implies a state/government enforcement.

I tried this out after reading this thread and the Created in Sonar bit was added.  Then I went in on the Soundcloud website and edited the tags and text for the song.  I couldn't see/edit the Sonar tag there but changing the parts I could change seemed to have removed the Sonar tag.  After my text/tag edit the Created In SONAR was gone.  Has anyone else seen that?

And now it's back.  Very strange.  Does seem like Soundcloud should let you turn it off though.

Craig if you think you can post on the forum and get a pass as an unbiased poster you are sadly mistaken, the "bread is buttered" in it's current condition with your close relationship with the Cakewalk company that has your name loaded into the products fx chain, I am making no comment about income or product I am merely stating that you cannot possibly expect anyone on this forum to think you don't have a dog in the cakewalk parade...expecting you to say anything negative or even agree with anything negative about the product is not on the radar, and since it is not I cannot consider your posts as unbiased no matter how much you defend it...and as you surely know bias is great in tubes but not so much in opinions (unavoidable I am sure but the degree of bias can make the information either clear or noisy depending on how hot the opinion is) .

In my opinion the Sonar ad watermark is unnecessary, Logic does not do this and to my knowledge neither does Pro Tools, at the very least Sonar should give you the option to not upload or tell you beforehand it is going to tag your material.

As far as copyright and soundcloud that is a completely different conversation, unless you are implying that Sonar somehow has a pony in that race as well.
