Well right now Subway is trying to put avocado on everything. I kid you not, the person in front of me ordered a tuna sandwich and the girl offered to add avocado.  Gross.  I'm not an avocado person to begin with but I can't imagine avocado people would like it on tuna.

+1

I don't even like avacado on my guacamole.

Cartoons are amazing studies in logic, philosophy and other mental diseases.

In spite of all of his apparent advantages in a hypothetical combat situation, Wile E Coyote will never catch the Road Runner.  Rocks fall in precisely the worst possible series of interconnected events so as to produce an inescapable catastrophe for the coyote.  When running after his prey, he will run off the ledge and stand on thin air.  Gravity, temporarily suspended by his lack of belief, reasserts its claim on him only when he sees his perdicament.  One could view Wile E as an Existential Nihilist.

Bugs Bunny's remarkable and somewhat uncanny ability to outwit bullies is derived in large part by his use of logic.  Find yourself facing a dire threat at the hands of a merciless foe?  No problem.  Pretend to accept your fate.  Initiate a lengthy rambling discussion about anything and slip in an untruth stated as "fact".  Keep talking to divert your foe's attention from the faulty assumption.  Lead your enemy to a logical conclusion based upon bad data which will result in their own ultimate failure.  It can be as simple as an argument over whether or not it is Duck Season or Wabbit Season.

Tom and Jerry?  Beyond being codependent enough to star on Jerry Springer, they provide simple "cause and effect" thought experiments.

Pepe Le Pew could be considered to be delusional, but that fails to take into consideration the fact that in his view, Love can overcome any obstacle.

Tweety Bird is continually attacked by a Puddy Tat that is far stronger, more dangerous, and more heavily armed and yet, Tweety is undefeated.  Faced with an opponent he cannot match in terms of strength or straight-forward combat, Tweety relies on quick thinking and an uncanny grasp of Physics to outwit his opponent.  When even his wits cannot save him, Tweety is never too proud to call for help from Granny.

Phineas and Ferb display an extraordinary genius for constructing amazing devices, vehicles, roller coasters, etc. which are are all 100% Earth Friendly.  One way or another, they vanish, dematerialize, or are blown away just before their mother can see them.  In spite of their uncanny engineering abilities, they are completely unaware that their pet Plattypus, Perry, is in reality Agent P, a highly skilled secret agent.  Thanks largely to Agent P (with an occasional accidental assist from Phineas and Ferb), Dr. Doofenshmirtz and his "...inators" (Doom-inator, Babe-inator, etc.) are ultimately defeated.  While Dr. Doofenshmirtz is an evil inventor, he thoughtfully always installs a self destruct button on every device he makes, thus reinforcing the transitory nature of Technology which is revealed as a means to an end rather than as objects to be posessed.

I could go on, but I think I need more coffee.

I used to think that the Teletubbies were responsible for at least a 30 point average drop in IQ in the US.  Then, I saw Boo-Bah.  I take back everything negative I ever said about Teletubbies.  The Teletubbies are Rocket Scientist Brain Surgeons by comparison.

Caillou is disturbing, though.

I watch Kipper the Dog with subtitles.

Cartoons is such a nice art form. Too bad it's used for so much nonsense! I've worked with many cartoons that I wish no one ever watch - Lola & Virginia being one of them. I miss the good old ones. One of the first cartoons I ever worked on was the Norwegian dubb of Woody Woodpecker from 1956 or so. Now that's healthy entertainment!!

Speaking of Teletubbies, ever seen In The Night Garden? It's similar to Teletubbies. It made me crazy to watch it but kids love it! I'm not sure if it's a good thing. Only time will tell I guess

+1 for Kippah

Re:Stand up DORA!!! 2012/06/19 14:48:15 (permalink)
I haven't had the privellege of seeing that one (Edit to add: In the Night Garden).  Cartoons are a strange, somewhat warped reflection of our world.

When many of us were growing up, we didn't have so many shows and formats hitting us.  We had dirt.  Sometimes, we had a stick.  Where I grew up, we also had horny toads (Horned Toads, now an Endangered Species in Texas).  Most of our games included trying to avoid excessive rattlesnake and water moccasin bites.  In the cartoons, someone else was outwitting the bullies, surviving attacks, and taking the beatings we took the rest of the time.  Cartoons weren't instructive, entertaining, or inspiring.  They were therapy.

There was one, however, that gave me nightmares.  If I remember correctly, it was a Woody Woodpecker cartoon.  It featured a "Tree Doctor" who would walk up to the trees with an oversized syringe and inject the trees with something that would make them grow.  For reasons, I can't recall, there was a conflict of some sort in the forest.  Typical cartoon hijinks ensued.  In the end, however, the tree doctor was injected with his own syringe.  To his horror, his arms became branches and his legs solidified into a tree trunk.  The wood pecker closed in on him, with menace apparent in his eyes.  The tree doctors terrified scream froze as his face hardened into wood.  His dead eyes stared helplessly as the woodpecker tore into his face.  The End.

I saw this alone in my house just as the timer rang to tell me it was time to walk to school.  I knew before walking out I would be beaten within a few minutes.  There was nothing I could do to prevent it and there were too many of them for me to fight back.  I identified with that tree doctor like I had never identified with anyone else.

I didn't sleep for days.

Good times...

My kids are all chronologically adults now,

When Reece sez sumthin' he really sezzit...

My mum always used to say that about me but she used to explicitly add the 'but he ain't grow'd up yet' bit.

Good stuff for the kiddies, lots of hidden inuendos so that the parents will watch too.  They certainly don't make 'em like that anymore!  I actually even watched the movie with Piper Perabo in it.  That seemed weird combining humans with cartoon characters (ala Roger Rabbit), but Piper was cute and the moose and squirrel were exactly as they should be!

Actually, Warner (Cartoon Network) make a lot of cool shows IMO with plenty of inuendo (if I understand the word correctly). I worked with Squirrelboy and my favourite quote from the series is:
"What?? Are you a member of the all Johnsons club now?!"

Completely un-translatable to Norwegian - but we really tried hard to keep the joke!!!
