Stand up DORA!!!

hEY!

I know many of you either have children or grand children and I BET they like TV! I have neither - I do have a TV - but as you may know, I work a lot with cartoons for children.

One question; I'm working with the Norwegian dub of Dora The Explorer - doing edits and mix, the fun stuff (yeah right) - and Dora and her friends keep telling the viewers to yell and stand up, sing along and so forth. My question is, do the kids actually do that when watching this show????

My kids have been out of Dora for a couple of years now but, we did get up and sing the intro song when watching at home.  Also, my kids would answer the questions (e.g., which path do we take to get to Dora’s grandmother’s house) but not necessarily jump up to do it.  So, at home, at least for my kids it was a mixed bag.

They had television time at my kid’s daycare (through kindergarten) and I know they had all of the kids actively participate in Dora.  Motivating the kids to get up and say things along with them and make the animal shapes, etc.

We also went to a couple of the live productions of the show.  There too the kids definitely participated.

So, I think the extent of participation is driven by the parents or daycare providers.  At home, with me, setting a stellar example for my children by lying around like Jabba the Hutt, the kids participation was minimal but at daycare with the teachers participating, the kids got involved.

    Hey Dave!

Thanks for that. Wow, that's actually really, really interesting! I actually thought they were wasting their time with all that but then I realized they've been making it for so many years so something have to work!

That point about parents' encouraging to participate is also very interesting. I guess the "Shut Up And Watch TV"-Parents doesn't have kids who will answer the questions and jump around.

I suppose that's a good thing then. I really should have kids when working with this. I do not understand the target audience! I really don't like Dora but it's good that it works for the kids.

Thanks for the insight. I'm guessing that this could be the case in other families as well.

My kids are all chronologically adults now, but I am certain a big percentage of kids will stand up and sing along!  that's what makes the money for these shows is to get the kids to participate so they want to watch it more and can then tell mom about huggies diapers or Gogurt!

He he, of course, that's the business! It's all about advertising! It's very rare that we see cartoons for kids with a proper story - I think that's a shame! And when they do come around they're never prioritized on TV or very popular.

Besides Pokemon, that's like WWE - only more realistic!

I have a 5 & 3 yr. old girls who do watch Dora, but not all the time. My 5 yr. old never participated in Dora's requests (even when she was 4) as I think she associated herself with older children's material....(she was already doing grade 1 work at that time).

My 3 yr old however does participate in answering the questions Dora asks, but doesn't get up & shout/yell. (We've always tried to maintain "indoor voices" (they're still trying to embrace that concept) but she interacts a little bit (you could see it in their faces that they're absorbing eveything they watch)). We're trying to limit their TV time with more of the artistic/mentally challenging activities to encourage them in more educational programs. I did notice though on the songs in Dora, they're much louder and are very festive.....somehow, the children just don't like it when I get up and dance to these songs .....they always tackle me down and then we end up moving on to a more intellectual activity...........WWF.

My not-quite-4-year-old loves Dora. She sings, she dances, and she yells "Lo hicimos!" right along with the immigrant child.  And then she expects me to get up and dance with her, so I do.

edit: I got a little confused with the OP. I thought you were doing a Noregian Dora the Explorer dubstep remix.

Hey Mesh!  I just got super busy at work for a while to end the school year, and since I only get on the forums at work I was incommunicado.   I do still lurk fairly frequently but didn't get a chance to jump in too much.

Thanks a lot for your input guys. This is actually really valueable info to me. I kind of understand what this is for now... even though, I still don't like the show at all!

BTW, over here they don't teach Spanish, but English. Spanish would be better. We aldready have a show teaching kids Chinese so why go with something they'll learn anyway

ProjectM - they should give her an English name then. At that point, "Dora" doesn't make a lick of sense. They should call her "Carrie" and have her set fire to Boots with her mind.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that's the name of Mooch's dog (Dora).

Well, without any Google-ing, I believe it's for Isidora, which I think means she'd be named Dorothy in English and probably go by Dot (like Dot Warner from Animaniacs).

Guess it's time to look it up.  lol

He he I kind of doubt they named her after his dog

I was just wondering what the name means in terms of the Spanish language since the name Dora doesn't make sense when they babble in English

I was always more partial to Baby Jaguar on Go Diego Go (a Dora spin-off).  No matter what the occassion, the producers only had one "growl" for Baby Jaguar, so it had a very distinctive, yet completely unrealistic, sound.  I found Backpack (Dora's faithful companion) to be rather annoying and nonsensical.

I mean, her backpack sings to her and speaks Spanish?  That's ridiculous!  At least, that's what Tinfoil Undershreddies says.  I should mention that I have a new acquaintance who only speaks High Venusian, yet somehow I can understand him.  He also chafes a bit.  ...And hides me from the black helicopters and the TSA.  Sometimes, I wish he would stop making me wear clown costumes, though.

    Speaking of Baby Jaguar.....
Did you also notice that Baby Jaguar is the only animal that speaks in the show?
I suppose it all makes sense when you consider Goofy (being a dog) and has pet dog (Pluto) that doesn't speak.

EDIT for adage: Have you also noticed that Caillou is the only child that doesn't have any hair?

I find the backpack to be the most believable part of the entire drug-induced hallucination.

That Pluto/Goofy thing always bugged the crap out of me. How did one get to be anthropomorphic and the other not? Why didn't Pluto eat Mickey?

It«s always funny when people try to question the logic in cartoons. If all cartoons were logic there wouldn«t be any entertainment!

Actually, if all cartoons were realistic and logic, they would all be like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZKznjszTcI and music would win

Hmmm... Could be. I'm not sure how subway does their thing.

Well, kidney beans and feta cheese salad for me today and then I'm off to the gym!

Well right now Subway is trying to put avocado on everything. I kid you not, the person in front of me ordered a tuna sandwich and the girl offered to add avocado.  Gross.  I'm not an avocado person to begin with but I can't imagine avocado people would like it on tuna.
