I'd say he deserves a purple heart medal. One of the best detailed posts I have seen for someone with issues - really helps us to help when we have that level of detail. Bob Bone

Hi, As far as crashing goes,it constantly still[after only 2 years]how varied, and downright bizzarre, the eventual cause can be[if you're intelligent/lucky enough, that you can find it!] I have a Dell XPS L502x that has had heavy, and mostly happy use,and also I'm a smoker, and even though it,is not quite 2 years old,its been "white screening" and then I must do a Forced Shutdown-hold off/on button, for at least 6 seconds[only with SONAR though],and just thought,oh well,it's the smoke, dust etc.BUT.... I recently bought a cakewalk VS-100 interface /controller cheap, and while at first,I was not very impressed with the Round Trip Latency,I can now positively say that ALL my "white screens" etc, have TOTALLY been eradicated, since using, and now getting used to the beauty, that the VS-100 is,and it NEVER loses it's USB connection, like the "bus powered" N.I. KA6,that was causing the major issues,N.I.Software good-Hardware Hmm? Bob

Make sure that the Sample Rate in Sonar matches the rate in the interface - just a thought, that seems to provide a reasonable round trip latency without dropouts. It's all a balancing act - performance against audio quality. Bob Bone

Iv'e also adjusted/experimented with the"sync and caching" playback/record buffer size,as well as MIDI-Playback/Recording buffers, but left most at default. One project today though, with only 16 tracks,10 busses, but lots of plugins, forced a "1024 samples"setting in ASIO,or it wouldn't play, but,no big deal,as it was only mixing, not recording. One thing I did notice was, after downloading the latest W7 64 driver, was to make sure to consistently choose/double click "files",till you get to W7 "64 bit",which I thought was strange,as the driver downloaded, was already "for" Win 7 64 bit, but, making sure one continues to dbl click "files".it's possible to perhaps "prematurely" choose "set up"[for XP or Vista or 32 bit],which appears,at every dbl. click,["set up" that is],which I think I may have done, the first time. I'll possibly sell the N,I, KA6,though for less than 9ms it does do well[when it can keep it's connection!],though I don't think I'll put this poor laptop, through the "white screen","hard shutdowns" again. Cheers Bob

Some plugins can really hammer a system - some use look-ahead processing and others really jack up the latency. Those plugins are intended for use post-tracking. Bob Bone
