Still In Love With You (Thin Lizzy Cover Collab)

Here is a cover of Still In Love With You by the late, great Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy.   Robby carried the lead vocals and harmonies, I think he did a quite amazing job on them.   I did the backing track and played guitar.   This version is based on Thin Lizzy's live version from Live and Dangerous.   Sorry for the length but I did trim about 3-4 minutes off the TL live version by cutting the guitar solo bit at the end off.  Let us know what you think.  Thanks

Whoa, you guys really knocked this one out of the ballpark didn't you?  Wow!  Seriously great job.  Loved the guitar tone.  Great overall feel to the track, and the mix and production were spot on perfect to my ears.  And who is this Robby character, anyway?  I mean, that boy can SING.

Really superbly done guys... take a bow on this one!

"my high honor to work with Mister Markno999..."

He is a uniquely talented musician and engineer?

And when I say uniquely? Well... I think it is understood...

And when it comes to the ****ing guitar? (I didn't actually put the word in? I just put stars...)
The solo is "amazing..." It is epic? And if you listen to this song? You should "focus... on the solo in the middle? It is incredible...

So when it comes to the ****ing guitar? (that time I actually used the word?)

Well? Mark is the ****ing man! (stars) He has the skills to pay the bills.

And on the mix? I'm hoping someone can help improve it? But... In all seriousness? It's pretty awesome? I had some input pre-post? Most of it he accepted? Some of it he did not? Mark is a smart man :-) LOL! And "THE MAN!" Give it up for my favorite colab partner! He Frekin ROCKS!!

    Mister Markno999!!! (I'm clapping?)
One of the most talented people on this forum people!!! "I put him up there with Frank and Timaaaay!!!" Which is good company to be in? Mark ROCKS!!! He is very humble? But one of the most talented people among us! Seriously, much respect...

And he deserves extra respect for putting up with me? I am a troubled artist people... And I am not easy to work with? I know this about me...

Really good :-) I listened multiple times... Just really really good. And I'm not commenting on my performance? I'm commenting on Mark's mix? And his mad skills... Just really "really" good.

No disrespect to any of my other colab partners? But "Mark is the man..."  All you other Slim Shady's are just imitating?

I believe his performance on the guitars? And on the mix? Is really spectacular... And I did a pretty good job on the vox? It was good? But IMO the mix, and the guitars (and the vox in last place?) It's just a really special tune IMO. I am honored by Mister Markno999 by allowing me to contribute/participate?  I am not blowing smoke? I love this guy? And respect his talent... And thank him again for the opportunity to have my name next to his...

I am not familiar with the tune, but this was one fine performance by all involved indeed.

I wasn't familiar with it either? Mark introduced me to it?

Evidently, it's a rock ballad "classic?"  I didn't know this? So this version is a combination of what he was feeling from the original?

And what I was feeling "as the singer, with the music and words?"

Love the track, such execution on all phases.  Guitars are both hot lava and sweet cream. The sound on the lead @3:10 takes me back, bro.

Robby sent me an early mix last week, and I have to say it is his best vocal track.

Mark, you care to share on your guitars and how you recorded them?

Not familiar with the song, but a real cool tune. Top notch performances on vocals and guitars. Love it for sure. Production is top shelf on this.

I should keep this track on my DAW as a reference of a what an awesome mix is supposed to sound like.  I love everything about this...guitars, cool bass, great drums, mix, vocals....what's not to like?  Great job, both of you!

Even though I'm no longer the favorite collab partner.    It's OK...I'll suck it up and take it like a man.    And only cry a day or two.  I promise.

Mark deserves your praise and respect...and you guys sound amazing together.  Keep it up!  :)

I gave him a version (take one?) And he was like, yes, that is a nice "pretty sweet ballad?" I want the nasty 70s version? So after some scotch, push-ups, and a workout beating the heavy bag? This is what came out... It is mixed up hot as Mike pointed out? I think it sounds good though. But it could go either way? He could pull some pressure off the limiter for some, or leave it as is. I'm fine with it either way. I just wish he would have kept more of my baritone sax :-)

Phil - Thanks for the listen and comment.  I enjoyed your recent collab very much as well.   Glad you liked the guitar tone, basically I am learning as I go and use lessons learned from previous mixes to dial in what I am looking for.   Thanks again.

Robby-Appreciate your high praise, your check is in the mail;)  In all seriousness, I attribute any mixing skills that I have developed to this Forum and all the great information that is shared within it.  In addition, it doesn't hurt to have a bit of OCD when dialing in this stuff.   And, I would further add three things, 1) competition - you hear the stuff produced on this forum by many of the many talented players and engineers it just naturally pushes you to the next level.  2)  Collaboration - I have noticed that someone else's interpretation of music will inspire me to make changes to how I might approach it.  That could be through a direct collaboration or simply observing others.   3) Training - even though I don't comment on every single song on the Forum due to time constraints (not retired yet) I do listen to many and read comments of others. Simply through osmosis that information is absorbed into your workflow.

Shad - Thanks for your comment.  It was a super fun tune to work on.

James - Thanks for the listen.   I appreciate your comments.   Regarding the guitar recording process.    I switched to PodFarm 2.0  some time ago.   Though I use my RME FF800 as primary sound card, I bought the Line 6 UX2 which I use to record guitar parts due to it's convenience and zero latency features.    This cover was done with my '77 Les Paul.   The chain went Les Paul < Boss Compressor (modded) < Line 6 UX2.   I open Podfarm in Stand-Alone mode and pick a sound that I think is close to what I am looking for.   The Podfarm Mixer set-up for Channel A - Wet (what you hear) and Channel B - Dry (just the guitar signal).  In Sonar, I record both channels so I have flexibility to keep the wet version only, change entirely using the dry signal with a different amp/amp sim, effects, etc. or blending the wet signal with something else.   In the case of this song, all the guitar parts are blended with the original wet signal (Podfarm 70's Rhythm sound) and an additional amp sim on the dry channel.   For the Wet L and Wet R Rhytmn parts I used a preset in PodFarm called 70's Rhythm.   Though it is a dual-amp setting, I used Channel Tools to Sum L + R into a mono channel because I liked the blended overall sound.   In addition, I used a Podfarm pre-set in the left rhythm part called Purple Rain (the Prince song).  The right side rhythm blends in a Guitar Rig 5 preset call Hi-White Clean.   On the guitar channels, I am just using EQ and some slight compression with the ProChannel 1176 and the Cakewalk Tape Simulator using the Guitar Tape Default setting.     On the wet guitar channels, I am also using the Waves Kramer HLS plug just using the default Rhythm guitar setting.   The Reverb Bus is Reverberate with the stock Guitar Plate setting.  I EQ this reverb Bus - HiPass at 350 and LoPass at 10k.      The only other component is Delay Bus which is just the Sonitus Delay plug.    The lead guitars are three blended sounds, a Podfarm Marshall Lead pre-set and Guitar Rig 5 preset (80's solo) and another Guitar Rig 5 preset called (Hi-White Clean).   I just blend the together until I get the sound I am looking for.   Hopefully this answers your question.   I am doing this from memory as I am on lunch break at work but I think this is all correct.  Thanks

Grant - Thanks for the comment and listen.  Glad you liked it.

Mike - Thanks for the review.  It is a bit hot for a ballad.   I actually wasn't sure this was the final take so I didn't really pay that much attention to the limiter.    Or, maybe it was Robby's vocals;)

Absolutely top notch. I spent a lot of time listening to the 'Live and Dangerous' version of this song when it came out, and this is just about as close as you can get to the feel and power of that track. Just wonderful.

    Hi Mark,
I really like the performance and the interpretation of the song... and I think it's a fantastic song.

I wasn't speaking about an aesthetic opinion about how loud it seems... I am speaking of the 120+ digital overs that I can clearly hear in the mix. It should be super easy to fix without detracting from the over all effect.

    all the best,
    mike

Great cover... killer production and performances... it is a very hot mix... love your guitar tones... great soloing, in spite of a few notes bent a bit sharp... easy enough fix...
You guys are a great team... but what's with all the covers..? they sound awesome, but what can you do with 'em, once they're done..?
Why not focus those skills, and that energy into something original... something you can own, and sell..?

wow this is awesome, what a great performance.
the guitar lead was just amazing, the melodic feel, the bends,i love the bends and the slight amount of delay on it.

the vocals are also really good man.
you have the perfect voice for this song, though ive never heard the original.
normaly long songs have the ability to lose my interest fast, this one kept me hanging through the whole song.

again im a big guitar and vocal man,but the vocals really stuck out here with me,the guitars too but the vocals had a certain feel about them.

you guys should work together more often,it really is a perfect combo.
    (you two)

thanks for the listen, this one goes on my soundcloud rotation setlist.

    I give it a 9 out of 10 starz.
only reason it wasnt a 10 was because i did find it was on the border of being too loud.
this can mess with the dynamic feel of a song, not saying this was the case here but still, a 9 in my book is above top notch.

Scott -Thanks for the comments.   I am glad you like it, I feel like the mixes are getting better which is the whole purpose right?  Thanks.

Janet - Thanks for that.   Very much appreciated.  Don't feel bad, you will probably be his favorite collab partner next week;)

Vicente - Thank you.   I really enjoyed your recent dance post as well..  Good stuff.

Terry-Thanks.  I have always been a huge Thin Lizzy fan too.  Saw them back in '79 with Nazareth.   Phenominal show.

    Bob- Thank you

James-I am glad we hit the mark for you and that the performances were represented well with the mix.   Appreciate it.

Mike-I got your point.   I am not sure what happened.  I believe SoundForge may have re-set peaks when I rendered down the .mp3 for SoundClick.  I always export from Ozone at -.03 just to be safe.   Looking at my 320Mbps version here, the peaks are at -.03 so my belief would be that SoundForge re-peaked the 128Mpbs mp3 that I did for SoundClick post.  I appreciate you pointing that out.  Thanks for the comment.

Frank-thanks for the listen.   Yes, I know about the bends, I wanted to keep that solo section quasi-live sounding, and, V-Vocal is not working for me in Sonar X2 so I just left them alone.   Great question about why covers....Ultimately, I hope to post some originals, however, I want them to be represented in the best possible light.   Therefore, I have been focusing on developing my mixing and production skills with songs that I already know or that I feel will contribute to some new skill that I have not yet crafted.   At some point when I am comfortable that my mixes, performances and production skills are up to speed, I will likely start working on recording some originals.   I actually have a ton of originals dating back to around 1985....  More to come on that...  Thx.

"Janet, you are my prettiest colab partner?  "

Are you sure? I mean, really, really sure?  Cause maybe, just maybe, I can take it if that's true.  I mean, I haven't seen pictures of all the guys around here, so I'm not sure how we'll know...but I mean, well, we'll see.

Happy singing and I'll try to pick up my musical career from here.

    Nice.

But, yeah, it's unnecessarily too hot.

    All the best,
    Lynn
