Still No Snap
Working on a new track and I still can't get notes to snap to time in Staff View. The blue grid on the Control Bar says I am snapping to 1/8 notes, but when I draw notes or when I paste MIDI notes or clips, they end up at off times (like 12:1:03 or 11:4:114). (I am using 120 ticks per quarter.) This has always worked before. There *must* be some setting that got screwed up, but I have looked everywhere I know to loo. NOTE: NOT JUST A STAFF PROBLEM. THIS AFFECTS SELECTING IN TRACK VIEW.

Snap to nearest nearest audio zero crossing enabled? If you have any audio present that will scew the snap slightly. You'll find it in the snap preferences.

Well, FBB, the audio zero crossings was checked, but unchecking it did not fix this. This is really weird. There must be some keyboard shortcut I hit by mistake that changed something. Thanks for the idea, though.

Probably not it but have you checked your Snap "To/By" setting? Really does not sound like that is the issue but it's worth a look. Maybe a magnetic strength thing going weird? Landmarks? Just rambling off the usual culprits but I'm sure you've already checked. Cheers.

And althoug FBB's suggestion didn't work did you restart the project? Does it persist in older project versions/new projects? Maybe something got corrupted.

Along the same theme as audio crossing, are there any other landmarks checked? Clips? MIDI notes? Audio transients or anything else that might give unexpected results.

Seriously, this is driving me nuts because it is taking me two or three times as longer to create parts. • Snap To grid is on • Snap To value is set to 1/8 • Snap to time value is off • Landmarks (Midi, Clip, Audio, Markers) are off Entering 1/8 notes in staff they still end up at odd times: never on a musical value. Selecting in track view is always off. This is a huge productivity hit.

Just to be clear, is it all snap operations? i.e. Are you seeing drawn notes in staff view off, and time selections or drag and drop in the track view off as well? Is it consistent? i.e. every note? Is it always the same amount of offset or random? I'm racking my brains here trying to think of a setting that would do that but can't think of anything other than the zero crossing.

Hey, guys. Yes it is selections in track view, paste in track view, selections in Staff View, paste in Staff View, and note placement in Staff View. As far as I can tell, there is no consistent offset: Sonar is placing/pasting/marking wherever it thinks I have the cursor, so if I happen to be exactly on an 1/8 note, that's what I get. If I happen to be six or 10 ticks off, that's what I get. If I just randomly click on the staff, I should get notes exactly on the 1/8 or 1/16 or whatever according to the snap setting, but I don't: I get notes at random times. Regarding magnetism, it was low and then I set it high to see which way was better but that didn't fix the problem. Where *should* that be set? Either this is a bug personal to me, or there is some setting somewhere that is not obvious to me.

That really sounds like it is outright ignoring Snap altogether. This occurs in all your projects (including newly created projects) or just your current project? Sorry if you already ansered that. Could be corruption only affecting Snap (or as far as you've noticed). If no answer is forthcoming perhaps sending a copy of the project to tech support so thay can take a look might benefit not only you but anyone else who may get this issue. And I do not know if there is a Sonar setting that does this but maybe there is a "feature" that overides active Snap settings and results in what would normally happen with Snap disengaged. Like keybinding or something that temproarily disables snap without disabling it in the Control Bar. If that is the case perhaps a keyboard/mouse/windows input issue is occuring. Like a wireless keyboard/mouse going bad and sending faulty data or soemthing weird like that. Just some thoughts. Grasping at straws really. Good luck.

Set it to extreme, to rule it out. It's not high or low, it's light and extreme. Set it to extreme, not the step before, but extreme.

Konradh, start a new project, just to be sure.
Create a drum trk. Then try and work with that as far as dropping, clipping, shifting...
With snap set to extreme, see if you still get the same results.

Opened a new project and added just one track (piano). Opened Preferences and in the SAMP section, selected HIGH. (I do not have Extreme—just Off, Low, Med, and High). Opened a Staff view with snap set to 1/8 and note value set to 1/8. Randomly clicked around the staff and got notes at all sorts of random times (like 2:3:619, 3.4.148, etc.). Even notes that were visually stacked on top of each other were at different times. Basically, I have no Snap function anymore.

Upgrade has nothing to do with this behavior. In my Platinum the "Event Draw Duration" is what defines snapping in the Staff View.

I should change ticks to a higher value, but I've been doing 120 since Windows 3.1 so I know exactly how many ticks in each note, how many ticks to offset for doubling, how many to make each not for a glissando, etc.

I would advise an upgrade to Platinum, in my opinion X1 was the most unstable version of Sonar X series to date. I have found Platinum to be rock solid, and well worth the upgrade price.

Sorry to bother again, but is there ANYTHING I am missing? Is there anything in Sonar that controls this except 1-the snap grid (the thing that looks like graph paper with an arrow and a note value next to it), 2-the snap and nudge settings in Preferences, and 3-the event draw duration (which really only affects the duration of the note—not the snap)? If this were just a normal bug, I can't believe things would work for years and then suddenly stop. There must be another setting somewhere that has gotten turned off. This is a huge productivity issue. Thanks.
