Summer Rain - feat. Jamesg1213 and Ron (Remix # 2 Feb 4, 2018)

James and I co-wrote this instrumental. I asked the drummer from my High School days (and a few years beyond too) Ron to do the drums.

Here, listening on vintage Auratones and a sub driven by a Marantz 1060  - volume at about 10 or 11 o'clock ...
the snare drum is consistently too loud killing any chance of hearing the timing of most all the other instruments except for the quite often way too loud electric guitar.
Turning off the sub it turns into a snare drum and lead guitar song. The bass disappears in a lot of the parts.
Would love to hear it with a balanced well eq(d) mix.

Sorry to be ... well ... bluntly honest.
Nice tune and good idea and nice composition ...... hate the mix.

The kit sounds really good. I'm a little bit with Steve on the various instrument levels. They aren't way off, but the center guitar is a little too up front and the warmth from the bass is missing. This, being mixed by the bass player, is surprising...

Cool tune though, I'd just tweak the mix a bit...

    Thanks for the listen Glyn.

    Thanks Steve and Dan.

I'll take a look at those issues tonight when I get home. I did notice (in a road test) specifically that the solo after the breakdown was a bit too loud.

Ya, the bass could use some love.

I for one am happy with the overall drum kit and it's levels so I'm not likely to muck with that too much.

Nice track bapu and enjoyed the guitar playing, the others beat me to the instrument balance issue (no pun intended). I look forward to hearing the re-mix.

Some nice instrumental Rock here, guys. Cool song!
Do agree that the bass needs some love, and that the center guitar is a little too upfront (and perhaps a little bright).
This was listening on HPs'. Will give it another go in my studio.
    All the best.

Maybe its your cold, or maybe it's the collection of instruments as I've not "intentionlly" scooped any frequencies. Some basic HPF here and there (pretty standard fare I'd say).

Lastly I see a lot of energy in the 8K and above area, maybe that's making the lows for you?

Hey Ed. Good job on this. The playing is really good. I think the mix could be better.
Someone said scoop above and I think it has to do with the guitars. May they are too thin.
The cymbals are a bit strange in that they don't sound like standard ride and crashes. It's like a bell and a small China cymbal for the crash (or something). It makes the production sound like there are resonances when I think its just the sound of the cymbals.
I was comparing to some rock stuff on Amazon Music and your overall level is really good. It's like it needs some warmth and more fullness in the lower mids to upper lows or something.
It probably sounds great on your end. I listened in my car and on my studio speakers.
    I enjoyed it.

    Jimmy,

I've been waiting for a drummer's perspective on the cymbals.

Those are live cymbals and I'm still sussing out how to capture them properly. Actually they are the Zildjian Gen16 AE cymbal system. I don't have cymbal triggers, only drum triggers. They were the nickel versions but I've since upgraded to the buffed bronze which are supposed to be warmer sounding. We'll see on the next song.

I wonder if the new SD3 Tracker could help them out? It is supposed to anyway but maybe moving on is best.

Yes, I plan on using that, or MIDI conversion, even if I get the Gen16s working; as the cymbals I have may not always be the best sound for the song.

Wow!  My first day back on the forum in a few months and here's a dynamite new instrumental from my old buddies, Bapsi and James (and Ron?)!

Fantastic work, guys, I love all of the interesting twists and turns in this one,  although the complete stop at around the 4 minute mark made me think it was over until the surprise ending kicked in.

James guitar work and tone is super as usual.  Ed's tasty bass and keys sound great with Ron's drums, and the current mix sounds warm, full and nicely balanced.

Super stuff, guys, it's really great to hear that the forum is still kicking out high quality original music!

    Have a great weekend!

Great tune, guys! A live drummer makes a huge difference (especially when they're good!). Always a pleasure to hear James stretching out on guitar and Ed is solid as ever on bass as well as piano. Well done with the false ending, too! Didn't see that coming, ha!
