Thanks Rik.  Yeah, me too.  Although the weather here this last month has been amazing for those of us that enjoy spring.  :)

Gary, very good point. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the vacation...even though it seems as if I didn't even know where I was!  (and I wasn't even drunk!)  (JY said it's the Gulf of Mexico...but that doesn't seem nearly as romantic for a song name for some reason. lol)  Anyway, maybe it will help to know that we got an all-inclusive for a mere $200 for 5 days.  (we ate better than we ever have! lol)   And we only take vacations about every 5 years--and never one like that!  :)  Anyway, thank you so much.  I agree that I was very fortunate to get these two guys on board on this one.  :)

Uppn further research, they do indeed call it the Mexican Caribbean (though I was most certainly told it was the GoM when I was there last),

Very nice. This evokes the deeply soul cleansing sense one gets when visiting the ocean.
I have been fortunate to have been on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific, as well as the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean. I love them all, and each has its own character.
The fierce, pounding surf of the Pacific Northwest is my favorite, but I am also fond of the mild surf and bathtub clear waters of Key West.  I've never been to Cancun.
Yes James, Cancun is on the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula. It's outside the Gulf by about 40 miles.
In the grand scheme of things, that's not much. The water's still fine.

I liked the orchestration very much! The guitar melody didn't fit all that well, sounded like a track from your other tune; "FIG" (if that was the name) Once the guitar left and the orchestra entered, it all came together. Wow! Very nice!

Hi J, this sure has evolved a lot since I played on this. This has turned out great. Maybe you should mute the guitar, that'll make some people happy ; )

Hi all,

I've posted a revised version (same link).  I went for more of a David Foster "Symphony Sessions" sound stage. I put the piano right down the middle and dry, I added Symphobia strings to the LA Scoring Strings ($2k worth of string samples should sound like a couple of violins back there!) and I dialed down the woodwinds, especially the buzzy bass clarinet.

Thanks for listening,
Jonas

Janet, having been to the Caribbean 3 times myself, I am certainly going back a few more times, I understand your inspiration.

Have you ever seen water so blue?  And I hope you snorkeled while there because the view under that blue water is to die for.

Very nice tribute, and the best of reasons to write a song!

Janet and company,
I think this is the most lush offering that you have ever posted.
One of these days I hope to become involved in a colab, because I really get tired of just me.
And the closest I ever get to the beach is the shores of Lake Erie, not conducive for conjuring up beach vistas. LOL

Thank you,  James.  Glad I could help add some sunshine. :)

Thank you, John and Freddy.  :)

Thank you Daryl.  No, I don't recall seeing that color of blue before and that's mostly what intrigued me.  Actually we never found a great place to snorkel, so that was disappointing...and the one time we did it was chilly (and the water was murky) which was odd since I'm used to snorkeling in warm water close to the equator.  Anyway, I tried not to let that disappointment spoil the 4 1/2 days.  :)

Thank you Bruce.  Yeah, I determined to do things differently on this piece.  That's the main reason I sent it to Jonas...to see if the instruments were really doing believable things.  I guess they were because I think he changed notes more than instruments.  So I'm tickled with how it turned out and just may try another one sometime.  And yes, collabing can be really cool and very helpful, but it can be interesting, too, with so many more opinions on everything.  lol  Lake Erie's a bit cold too, isn't it?  I live right near a lake down here, but never anything near blue!  :)  Thanks again.

Hi, Janet,

This is really a beautiful, very "big" sounding cinematic style production!

Wonderful playing by both you and Rik, and Jonas's orchestration and mix were absolutely spectacular.

The three of you did a fantastic job on this, really well done!

Thanks Bob.  You're always so encouraging.  :)  It was fun to try new things (for me) with an orchestra and hear that they 'worked', and I was also real thankful to have Jonas and Rik along for this one...great musicians and gentlemen.

Hi Janet,

I love it.  My father-in-law has a wonderful condo at the Royal Carribean one floor up from the beach with an incredible view of the ocean.  We would relax all day at the beach and go downtown to the local restaurants for dinner.  In the middle of the peace you have a section with rolling piano chords that reminded me of the fun night excursions.  The relaxing feel and positive emotion this piece invokes is perfect.

Thanks.

I was disappointed - No Steel drums?  No Mariachi guitars?  Beautiful song Janet, but it struck me more of fall in New England than anywhere I've ever been in the Caribbean.  Just 'shows to go ya' how different individual perceptions can be.  I really do like the song, but I was expecting a couple of shots of Tequila with it.

Glen
BTW: Cancun is in the Caribbean (just barely).  The Gulf of Mexico starts at the Northern tip of the Yucatan.

Rimshot, that sounds wonderful!  :)  Thanks for the kudos.  So glad you liked it.

Thanks, Glen.  My next piece may have steel drums if I can ever get it finished.  :)  But yeah, fall in New England would be about right too.  Soon after I started this piece, I realized that's 'not what I meant', but by the time I get an opening riff in my mind, I can hardly sleep till I get it down.    So maybe I'll try again to capture the sea sometime soon.  I'm afraid it won't be what a lot of you may think of when you think of Mexico, and there probably won't be tequila either.  I guess our 4 1/2 days was a little more tame than some.  :)  Maybe we should have a new forum challenge and all write songs or pieces about Cancun.  That could be interesting!  :)

Yeah, I finally just looked it up...it IS pretty close to the 'dividing line, isn't it?  I obviously hadn't ever paid that much attention.  Fortunately, that didn't ruin the trip.  :)

Greensleeves? Sheesh...I'm not very creative, am I?  lol  Anyway, thanks so much.

I wouldn't say that at all...... usually..... but yeah it's a bit too similar for anyone who spent much time on the phone when being put "on hold" was first introduced, especially those of us that also grew up with those cheesy melody playing doorbells which all seemed to have that as default setting.  Anyway, I should have added that the production sounds great  and you're obviously doing something right to get Jonas on board, so fair play to you !

I finally get it.  It's the 'chorus' part, isn't it?  Well, if it helps, I didn't think about that song at all while writing this.  As usual, the first two bars came to me, then I had to do mental gymnastics to figure out a part to go with it.  That the first couple of notes remind you of Greensleeves...well, there's nothing new under the sun.  lol  On another note, on Youtube, someone said Greensleeves is the most beautiful music ever written.  While I'm sure not all of us agree, it's nice to be similar I guess.  :)  And yeah, getting Jonas onboard was a great win.  :)

And now that I've finally been able to see his revised midi tracks, I found out he added quite a bit more than I'd realised.  (I knew it sounded better, but didn't know why in every place. The end, for instance, is way more triumphant than I had it.  What a cool way to learn...I spent a couple hours comparing his and mine last night and I'm not done yet.  I really did 'score' getting his help.  :)

Yeah, it's a nice piece if you haven't spent what seems like half your life listening to really bad midi sounding versions !

I'll let you into a little secret now.......when I heard it I actually couldn't recall the name of the tune it reminded me of, so I played it into one of those music recognition apps that identifies the tune for you and it was that that came up with greensleeves, so it's not just me lol !

I know what you mean about how much you learn from seeing other peoples work in front of you. I really learnt a lot from the mixing template that Jonas kindly posted on the forum many moons ago.

Now I've been singing Greensleeves (or What Child is This?) all day long!    The confusing thing is that it starts on the 5th and this starts on the 3rd, which could be why I didn't recognize it.  Anyway, it's been messing with my mind all day.  Thanks a lot!

Janet, this sounds good, but I feel piano and strings are rather harsh (You want piano and strings to be sweet), perhaps lowering the overall velocity would help. but the composition is excellent.

Lovely orchestration. I think you've got the knack for doing this now, Janet. I think your skills are greatly improving as the piano melds very nicely with the orchestration and guitar. I think there are a couple of minor things here and there but overall I really think this works very well!!!!

Thanks so much, Pcode. Really glad you liked it.  I know both Jonas and I brought down the piano velocity, so not sure what happened there, but I see what you mean.

Thanks Jim.  I'm not sure if just having Sonar has helped my skills....or the thousands of hours I've logged on it in the last few years.  :)  Of course, having all the help here has been absolutely invaluable!  Thanks again.

I subscribe to the notion that "whatever can be written has been written".  It's our interpretations and arrangements that differentiate our songs.  I don't hear anything familiar in this but I don't listen to a lot of this genre of music, unless myou're playing it!  I will just say that this is a beautiful song and you both did a wonderful job!
