Swan Serenade, new mix 1/6

Simple, short piano solo.  Sorta inspired by the picture with the song.  That exact same picture is in National Geographic.  I've been staring at it for months cause it needed to have a song written for it.  :)  I'm not sure this is IT, but once again, that opening riff got stuck in my mind and I had to finish it.  Comments welcome, as always.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=789731&songID=12091578

1/6/13:  new mix, hopefully tamed a bit.

1/7:  35 listens and not one comment?  lol

hi Janet, seems you've finally found that middle c ; ) Seriously, I love this. I'm a sucker for a nice pedal tone anyway. Are you sure about that last note ? Timing is a bit off and I was expecting something much lower ....or higher ; )

Yeah, I knew middle C had to be in there somewhere.  :)  Glad you like this.  Pedal tone?  I'm not even sure what that is, but I'm glad you like it.  Last note...well, it's supposed to be slowing there...did you hear the very last note that's an octave lower?  You want it lower than that?  Or higher?  Yeah, I guess higher would work too.  It never even occurred to me actually.  I'll try it.  Thanks!  :)

Listened to it again, there is a last note that is so soft I didn't hear it before, sorry. Makes sense now, it is a bit soft though : )  On a church organ you would use  a pedal to play that c continiously, hence pedal tone

Yeah, as I just listened to it, I thought so too. I can raise that.  OIC what you mean about pedal tone now.  I couldn't out what chords to play, so I just kept playing C the whole time.  lol (j/k)

Hey Janet...lovely piece...flowed nicely and your playing is very smooth.  My only nit is that the bass notes, while very resonant, were sometimes a little overpowering to the treble...other than that...great :)

So, the bottom's too heavy, eh?  Do I just eq it differently then?

Thank you Allan.  I'll see what I can do about that.  :)

No problem with the bottom end here for me, but I would need to check it on some smaller speakers.  Nice playing and a nice melody.

Only listening on lappy so make of it what you will, but your left hand sounds a bit heavy and I think I would have gone with a higher and/or louder note at the end. Tone sounds a little harsh too, but like I said....... lappy speakers and can't download this one.....prolly just as well - you know what usually happens when I do that  :)

Nice... I has echo's of the melody of "the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" in it in places....  not a bad thing... just reminded me of that tune in several places.  You can sing the EF melody over the beginning of the song and it fits perfectly.

On the whole eq bottom end thing..... I need to listen on other speakers because I didn't hear too much..... it sounded like you have done a high pass a little too aggressively on the piano. I can clearly hear those huge low notes on the piano, but they are lacking the lower part of the frequency spectrum..... at least to my ears.

I also heard the 'Edmund Fitzgerald' in there. Very nice piece though Janet, not as sweet as the title would suggest, there's a little darkness about it.

Listening through headphones, I'd like to hear some more stereo spread on the piano, the left and right hand seem to be on top of each other.

I came back on headphones..... it sounds better in cans than it did on the speakers....

That lower bass note gets a bit repetitive.... and boring... and at the end.... I would not drop it's volume....

Very nice playing and composition janet. I could see this working well in a film situation to set a mood. The piano did sound a little harsh attimes on my speakers, but not overly so. Nice work.

Just lovely, Janet.  You may only need to adjust the velocities of the low notes to tame them, but they didn't bother me.  Fine performance.

I quite enjoyed that the bass does growl a little in places but it works.  Thanks for sharing

    Robby, is this any better?

    Thanks Eko. You're right.

Thank you, James, and happy new year to you too! Take care of yourself!

    Thanks a lot, Ben!

Thanks Paulo.  I just brought down the velocities even more, and especially on the left hand.  Thanks for the tip.  Also, I just changed the free download option yesterday.  Last month alone I had 67 free downloads.  I figured if I'd charge 75 cents for them, I could retire in 50 years instead of 100.  ;)

Herb, I hadn't heard that song in years.   Weird.  I don't use HPF cause I don't understand them yet...just use the Sonitus (and O4) eq.

Thanks James. Yeah, I probably should have picked another title because it's not what I had in mind for that picture either.  Oh well.  Thanks for the tip on the stereo spread. I think I've got that fixed now.

Thanks so much, Scott.  That means a lot. :)

Thank you too Frank.  Yeah, Scott's fiddle sounds superb just about everywhere. :)

    Thanks Ed.

Herb, funny that it sounds better in cans.  This is one of the few I've ever listened to and mixed totally with the speakers cause I've been home alone all week.  Probably lost all frame of reference.  Sorry it bored you.  Don't listen again. :)

Thank you, Blipp.  I hope the piano's better now.

Thanks Lynn.  :)  I adjusted them all. Again. :)

Thanks Wookiee.  The bass is supposed to be an important part of it but I probably needed to tame it more than I did.  Too much to listen for while mixing. At least for me.
Thanks again everyone.  I really appreciate your ears! :)
