I just tried again for good measure, and it works I can thus recommend this FW card for use with the FW1884
Now I need to rebuild my desk, so I can lower the FW 1884 a bit...
All the best.

Ken, that is good news! Thanks for the update.
Ed; hot swapping on the FW is not the best idea, eventually you're gonna "pop" the U9 chip.
I know Rio was doing it, but youch!! That bear is gonna bite you in the a$$.

Pulled everything apart today, including all connection to pc and AI. Cut a hole in my desk, to lower the 1884 a bit. Put everything back together, and everything still works Tried to turn off and on again with the 1884 while Windows running, with luck
Happy camper now
Again thanks. Now I need to dive deeper into this controller. Want to be able to understand the plugin settings / MIDI control etc.
All the best.

Today my FW 1884 would not connect with my pc I have tried several times, without any luck. I do not have other cables to try, but I tried with my former FW card with the same result. The FW connection will sometimes light up for a second, just to disappear again. Have something broken? And if so, if it fixable?
I hope that my journey with this unit is longer than this.
All the best.

Is the room "cold"?
Mine will "connect", firewire led is lit, then the FW connection will fail.
I leave the unit "on" and cycle it off/on after a few minutes and then it stays connected.
Or did until recently when it stopped "sending" (the the FW led is still "on" and the unit "receives" from Sonar).
You didn't plug the cable into the FW "upside down" did you? Doesn't sound like it.

Yeah, I gave that serious thought.

I ordered the same card as Zarggy. It should be here tomorrow. I'm hoping I'll see the same results (wrt: power off/on in Win 10 without crash.)

Thanks for chiming in again, Tom. If you mean cold as in temperature, no it is not cold. My FW connection does not light up, nor does it connect to the pc or SONAR. The cable has not been plugged in upside down either. I have tried to leave it on for a few minutes, and turn off/on, without any luck.
I will buy and try a new FW cable tomorrow, and cross my fingers that it could be something that easy
But if not, what do you think is at fault? I just hope it is something "fixable".
All the best.

I think when the firewire chip is damaged all light flash; I think that's right.
I have shipped numerous U9 replacement chips (I am NOT suggesting your unit needs one),
and I SHOULD know the symptoms, but I do not.
By "cold" yes I mean the room is cold.
My Studio is about 60 degrees, this time of year, and my FW will not stay connected on boot.
Guys on the Tascam forum had complained that their FW had to "warm up", like tube gear.
I thought, and responded numerous times, that could not be right.
BUT, there is a Tascam service bulletin, its on my site, that recommends replacing one of the
firewire capacitors because they are temperature sensitive.
You say the firewire LED lights momentarily when you boot the 1884; right?
That sounds like maybe a cap issue in the power supply...

The last times I tried turning it on, it no longer lights up the FW light.
It has become colder the last few days here in Norway, so I will leave the door to my studio open tonight to heat it up a bit, and try again tomorrow morning (Norwegian time). Hope that is a/the solution (I do not know if I am skilled enough to be able to exchange parts, if it comes to that)
Will report back. Thanks again.

Well, the good news for me is FW-1884 under Win 10 64bit is everything I wanted.

The Syba card now allows me to turn off and then back on while in Win 10. Just like I used to be able to with my ADS pyro card.

Looks like I will not be needing the X-touch until such time that the Tascam goes titzup.

bapu, just want to get this right.
The ADS pyro worked fine in Win 7. Was the pyro a PCI card? or PCIe?
Now with the same computer? upgraded to Win 10, the ADS quit working correctly?
Do I have that right?

The ADS pyro "quit working" in that while in Win 10 (booted) if I powered it off while in Win 10 and the powered it back on Win 10 would crash.  In Win 7 with the Pyro I could power off and on While in win 7 NEVER with a crash.

The Syba card lets me power off and then power back on while Win 10 is up.

Zarggy said that he belives the Syba card is hot swappable capable. I conclude the Pyro (or mine specifically) was not hot swapable capable.

Well.... I spoke too soon.

While Win 10 is booted it worked once bu not again.

I like to leave my DAW on 24/7 but only turn on the RME and FW-1884 when I'm actually doing audio work.

Just gonna have to change my pattern.

Other than that "glitch" the FW-1884 works flawlessly in SONAR.

The FW is working as a mixer? By that I mean the audio section is working, it just won't connect to the computer?

Re: Tascam FW 1884 works in win 10 X64 2015/12/20 10:27:01 (permalink)
I finally / suddenly got connection with my FW 1884 again today
I read all threads about the FW 1884 on tascam forum, back to 2005, and tried various methods without any luck.
I then decided to open it up, to see if anything apparent would show itself. I checked as many connections as I dared to. Sprayed some electronics cleaner in most places. Thought I had nothing to lose, as it did not work. Fired it up, with no go. Then I thought it cannot hurt more if I connect both FW ports from the FW 1884, and to the pc. No luck.
I then took out one of the cables, and voila. It connected
I am not sure if I dare to turn it off again, now that it is working again.

On a sidenote, I also repaired the SPL eq Magix I bought the same say the FW 1884 lost connection today (mostly with super glue and electronics cleaner).
Today has been a good day for me
I thank you (Tom, and Ed) for guiding me through my frustrations.
All the best

You know what Ed? I cannot seem to find the release number / version on my Studio Pc
I just went to the previous version / build via Settings, Recovery, Go back to an earlier build (did this last week).
I am working tomorrow (it is night in Norway as I write, and I need some sleep), and will not be able to check more until tomorrow night after work. I am writing this on my laptop..

Really good read guys, I have and use it's little brother control surface (FW1082) and have had no probs at all from XP, Vista to Win 7. All these O/S worked Fine with various Sonar platforms, now Platinum. Then the freebie Win 10 was too much of a pull ... so I upgraded .... work flow zero was the result! I'm afraid Win 10 is not for the fire wire user it seems, I tried to make it work and crashes with weird and odd things completely ruined my time in the studio ...so I reverted back to a fresh install of Win 7 and Sonar Platinum took a deep breath ... and all works fine. Windows 10 is a good big brother O/S but it's not for me, great on the laptop bad in the studio ...just saying is all!

My studio :- Win7 64bit 16GB, Tascam FW1082, Vx7, DX7, Tascam 688 (Analogue recording) and the rest is just showin' off)

Re: Tascam FW 1884 works in win 10 X64 2016/06/25 09:39:37 (permalink)
Resurrecting an old thread to say that I did a fresh install on my studio pc, with the latest Windows updates, SONAR updates, etc, and the FW 1884 is working better than ever before. Still used Tom's guide, and it all went without a hitch
This is just to give an update for other FW 1884 users
All the best.
