Ten years
This weekend ten years ago we moved to Scotland. I will never get tired of this view; Can't believe how lucky I am sometimes. Of course, life gives us a good kicking now and then, but there's always this to come back to. My friend of 45 years came to stay a couple of weeks ago. He's 52 and has lost everything...house and home, wife and kids, looking forward to bankruptcy and divorce at the same time. He wrote a song a couple of years ago with the line '' all sense of certainty, blown away and gone''..that pretty much describes his current situation. Anyway, while he was here he was up around 7am every day, took his coffee and cigarette outside and looked at this view for half an hour or so. I hope it helped a little. Edit: couple more nearby views:

Scotland is one of the greatest places to visit in the UK, especially the west coast north of Glasgow. I lived just outside Peterhead for a couple of years in the late 80s. That's a part of Scotland I wouldn't recommend unless you like the wind in your hair. I still visit the Fort William area every so many years.

That`s a great view. You won`t belive what view we wake up to today; snow! I can`t remember we`ve had snow in May before, and the funny thing, just a few days ago we had nice "t-shirt" weather. The weather-gods must have gone crazy. Do you understand what the Scots are saying? I saw interviews with Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini, and it was easier to understand the Italian guy.

trimph1 What peak is that in the distance? That's 'Larg Hill' Barry. It's about 4 miles away, and one day I'll climb it and take the binoculars to look back at me house. We're down in the South West corner and there's nothing high enough to be a mountain around here, but we got some nice climbs for the hill walkers.

James - you really are a good chap - nice heart warming story sir. The only part of your story that confused me was where you said your 'friend of 45 years'. I'm sure your pubic profile says 'age 35' ??

Jonbouy That's fantastic James. There's no place like home and being able to give some refuge to a good friend is something toward what makes a home so much more than a place. Nail hit firmly on head as usual JB. My pal's recent troubles served to remind me to make the most of, and look after what I'm lucky enough to have.

Lovely little village, but we couldn't afford to move anywhere local. It's all rock stars and royalty down there now. We needed some land for the horses, and prices up here were very cheap back in '02. Not so now...

Johannes H Do you understand what the Scots are saying? I saw interviews with Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini, and it was easier to understand the Italian guy. Got used to them now It's actually a fairly gentle lilt around here. In fact if the locals go up to the Highlands, they can be mistaken for Irish, as we're only a short distance away across the water.

Not far from Stranraer then, or are you further up and round on the mull of Kintyre? I used to travel a lot from Stranraer to Belfast many moons ago and in a former life, but almost always at night so I never actually saw much of the scenery around those parts of Scotland. I really must get back that way again in daylight with some time to see the sights, but it's such a long way out on that headland - over a hundred miles away from the A74 IIRC. I've an old mate who lives/used to live(?) in Dumfries, I really must look him up sometime.

We're about 25 miles from Stranraer, 50 from Dumfries. Lovely countryside around here, but no industry to speak of except forestry, farming and a little tourism.
