I LOVE how it sounds live, I used to have a keyboard rig that was a mini-pa type system and I'd have it in between the mixer and the amp.
As for using it in recordings, yeah, too harsh. I wish the contour was a little different. Too much is too harsh, but too little and it's like, "Why even bother?"

What's the latest version that's out for the DX plugin?

I have an older 442 and route it through my Mackie. If I want to add a touch of something to a track, I just hit my Alt button and dial-in what I want. I agree, works best with kicks and can add a little "sparkle" on cymbals and some vocals. Also agree that one has to remember the words "sparse", and a-little-dab-will-do-ya.

In the other world, it can make crummy stereo speakers sound listenable.

I bought it last year. Like most, I use it sparingly. I find myself adding it on some vox - some bass to boost it a tad, and some drums - mostly bass drums or overhead cymbals and most usually when I didn't record through a good pre-amp and mic (because the good two were being used)... I think it was worth the 99 dollars myself and I also agree that improper use sounds terribly harsh.

Very best regards,

Lance

Thanks for posting that link to DigiFreq, Jesse!

Moderation is definitely the key when working with these types of effects. Are they absolutely necessary? No. If you can get a good mix and apply EQ correctly, then your mix should stand on its own. But can an exciter help at times? Yes. You can't always get the perfect recording and sometimes a final mix can use some slight sheen. Gentle application of this type of effect can be useful as long as its not overdone. Let your ears be the judge. And be sure to give your ears a rest first. Don't try to apply this effect during the first round of mixing. Your ears will be too tired to judge correctly.

ORIGINAL: ohhey

ORIGINAL: DroopyPawn

I use it on stereo tracks that came from old cassettes. After noise reduction plugins, these tracks usually need some help getting fat again.

Yeah.. that's what I use it for, I got it for restoration work. I don't think I've ever used it on a "modern" recording, mainly for turd polishing.

Yeah, me too. It does a great job on the lo-fi recordings I've made with my portable DAT machine. For "mastering" Sonar projects though, Ozone does a much better job fattening up the lows IMHO.
