The Beepster Creep... First tune with X2 and TH2
It took a heck of a long time but here's my second tune. It's a metal song and a little hairy and I'm not sure how it's gonna sound on other systems so you might want to turn it down at first... http://soundcloud.com/use...324/the-beepster-creep It's not quite where I want it but I think this is about as good as it's gonna get with my current skill level however I did learn a LOT doing this one. The drums are performed completely with my fingers on my padKontrol with no PRV edits whatsoever (still gotta learn that stuff) through BFD Eco (Platinum Samples Rock Legends kit). The guits are straight through my interface using TH2 Producer (even though I have the full version now I wanted to stick to the Producer to demo it) and all other effects like EQ and compression are included in X2 Producer except for the PC2A leveler which I used minimally on the bass tracks and then on my Master (exported the original project and applied it in a new project from the resulting stereo wave). It's kind of lost a lot of the oomph now that I'm listening to it on my crappy laptop speakers but whatever... I'm still learning. Hope you guys enjoy it and any suggestions are appreciated. I'll be taking a break for a bit because real life beckons but I wanted to get this up after all my yammering about it. Thanks to all that helped me getting this together. You rock. CHEERS!!!

Wow I am impressed. Awesome tones your getting with TH2. Is this the full version or just the cakewalk pro version? Anyway you did a fine job with this project!

Thanks, Marcus. This is the version that comes with X2 because I wanted to showcase it because of that one thread and I only JUST upgraded as you know. I feel I didn't necessarily do the program the justice it deserves because I think over tweaked and messed up my high lead sound (more hi-mid than I wanted) but I'm still learning. Lots of stuff I'd do better with this but it's only my second go through with Sonar and I'm gonna maybe use this on a future album so it will be rerecorded another time. Just happy to get it out there and again thanks. I'm glad you liked it. :-)

Well the guitar tones sound good to me. In fact really good. I have thrown a few practice songs together just to learn the new Sonar as well. even so..... I like your arrangement skills

@Marcus... Again, thanks. This was definitely another tester song to get my head wrapped around everything in general. Total crash course I guess. I've never done pad style drums, worked with MIDI, anything cakewalk related aside from the project that preceded this and even basic stuff like busses, compression or panning laws. I've recorded a few things in the past but it was no where near the sophistication level of Sonar and what I attempted here. Very happy to get my hands on some powerful tools finally. Now I just gotta learn how to weild them... lol. Cheers, buddy.

Cool, bapu. I wasn't sure about the drums. I felt when I tried to get them up in the mix they were overpowering but you know what it's like after listening to something a million times. As far as the bass goes I think the main issue was plugging straight into the interface. I used to get better results through my Line6 but I don't have room to set it up now. New place is coming soon though so I'm gonna be able to yank out all my goodies again. Hooray! Thanks for checking it out, kind words and insight. :-)

Looking at the waveform on soundcloud too I think this managed to get overcompressed. It's not supposed to look like a solid block like that, is it? I might have gotten a little overzealous on my master file. Maybe I killed the drums there.

This is really good Beepster. I still don't have anything set up at the new place, so I'm listening on laptop speakers ... but it sounds excellent on those.

That is good to hear, Bub and thank you. As soon as I listened to them on my computer speakers it sounded like poop... but I had just been mastering it on my monitors for a couple hours beforehand. Might have had something to do with it. Hope you get set up soon. Always a pain that is. I'm about to go through it myself and although I'm looking forward to new digs I am NOT looking forward to being without all my toys during the teardown/setup process. Cheers.

Agree that the drums could be a little stronger in the mix (or is that just because my ears have been deprived of the metal genre for so long...can't remember what they're supposed to sound like). The guitar sounds awesome! I take it those are humbuckers, because I'm NEVER getting that kind of tone out of my Telecaster, TH2 or not Great solo playing, a little Mustaine influence in there methinks?

PS I wouldn't worry about the Soundcloud waveform. If your mix is pretty dense (and any metal mix is going to be) then I think it's always going to look like that.

@sharke... Thanks, man. Yup, it's the Seymour D bridge humbucker on my Pacifica. Been kind of wrestling with the axes because it's fretting out a bit and needs a new nut but the pickups are great. Dude who owned it before me modded it out pretty sweet... and Megadeth was one of my favorite bands as young skid. I preferred Friedmans style but the hands don't work quite as fast as they used to so yeah... probably more Mustaine these days. Cheers!

I always liked his phrasing and the notes he played, more so than his technique. I once read that him and his buddy used to smoke pot and go to jazz clubs, so maybe he's picked up a little of that. Plus he got thrown out of Metallica for being too badass which is +1000 in my book.

Ha... yeah. Metallica kind of turned out to be wankers. Dave was always bad ass. Very angry and talented dude. I think he's one of those guys who was OBSESSED with guitar and despite his somewhat clunky fingers he always chased perfection. I can relate to that.

Man... I can't even remember the last time I used earbuds. I don't think I could handle them anymore. My ears are too cranky these days. I think they'd go on strike if I tried to cram some in. Even the nice cans kind of bug me. I think I used them briefly like four or five times this entire project just to check some edits.

The problem I have with earbuds is that I'm forever adjusting them to get a good sound. Everything's sweet and then you swivel your head and lose the bass in one ear. But a huge percentage of music these days is listened to on crappy ear buds. The number of people who inflict those horrible iPhone buds upon their ears is startling. Nonetheless, you have to make sure that your mix sounds good on them. Same goes for low-grade computer speakers. I've heard a few top producers say they continually check their mix on a $30 pair of laptop speakers. It's a bit like the old days when they'd take a mix out into the car park to check it on cheap car speakers. It's also worth making sure that your music is listenable on just one stereo channel, because if it's played in a store or somewhere where they have ceiling speakers, there's a good chance you're only to hear one side of the stereo field. The ceiling speakers in my gym, through which they play a classic rock station, only play one side. It sucks when they play something like "Wish You Were Here" and you hear the intro solo without the guitar strumming. If you're interested in checking your mix on multiple types of speakers that you just don't have access to then it's worth investing in a VRM box at some point. That has a lot of speaker simulations. I continually check my music on the Auratone setting to make sure the mids sound good. And you can also choose computer speakers, TV speaker, 90's Hi-Fi as well as a good range of quality studio monitors.

I forgot to ask the most important question I had (totally spaced out today because of other mayhem)... despite their low level, what do you guys think of those drums? Do they sound natural? Could maybe the average listener mistake them for an actual drummer on a real kit? It was my first time messing around on that level and it's kind of important to me to be able to pull a convincing fake out. I just can't physically play or store acoustic drums anymore and this aspect was what concerned me the most about my journey into fully DAW based production. Cheers.

Good advice all around there, sharke. Thanks. I've got a couple stereos but they aren't set up but I definitely use my crappy Labtec powered computer speakers as a final gauge of what's going on... which is why I was a little disappointed with this one but comparing it to my last attempt it's a lot better. I'll get there.

NICE!!! great job on the drums using a pad. the way they sit in the mix reminds me a bit of mastodon during the blood mountain days. i think you can fatten them up with some doubling and multitracking a bit. e.m. had a great interview with mike elizondo about recording the hunter here: http://www.emusician.com/features-interviews/0777/mastodon/144592 check it out - great read about putting together a great album. and the drums - if they sound like they fit then they sound real because they're organic to the song... drums are processed a LOT in recording today anyway. again, well done!

beepster this is off the hook bro..im floored hommie...wow. your guitring is awesome, great sound out of the th2 as well. but the riff progressions and leads are right up my alley man,id love to share some work someday and have us work together on something possibly in the near future when its good for both of us. loved it..absolutely loved it. but your drums are non existint bro. you have session drummer 3,you should be able to have an almost realistic sounding drum track, that to me sounded like a bad hair day hi-hat track with some drums in the distant backround. but you know what, its going to take some time getting used to session drummer or any other drum software, its possible that could have been ez drummer,it kinda sounded as such. but over all,i really liked this alot man. great job, looking forward to hearing more, maybe someday with the beepster chops (vocals) ??? nice.
