The Bouy - Photograph of You (redo)

Retro French 60's style ballad.

1st part of a collection of songs by the Bouy and the Mermaid following this particular 'vintage Euro' theme.

It was posted awhile back but now completely redone.

The Mermaid
= BGV
The Bouy = The Rest

Spoken Verse 1

It's OK, don't say a thing
Please don't speak, anymore
You've made it plain, time and again
Where the sun is, you bring rain
I know this place, I've been here before
A strange wilderness, behind my own door
You go now, you have no claim.
On me no more

Sung Chorus

All I have is this photograph of you.
The places we went and the things we used to do.
From a time when we dared that it was true.
Memories don't fade near as quickly as the view.
Spare us.
From having to face, the pain again and again.
Move on now lets stop hurting, hurting ourselves.
Let's learn to live and love again
by saying goodbye.
That's all that we can do.

Spoken Verse 2

Who would have known, our love would die.
We sailed off, in a cloudless sky.
Time took its toll, we didn't change.
What came easy, became so strange.
I know this place, I've been here before
That strange wilderness, behind my own door.
Just go now, you have no claim.
On me no more.

Guitar Solo

Sung Chorus

All I have is this photograph of you....

That a Bouy! Very entertaining and melodic. I love the mixture of dialogue and singing. Love the guitar solo! You have a mermaid? How much will one cost me?

Nice song. I like this a lot. Another twist on a standard progression and still, it's sounds fresh.

I wanna say that sounds really sweet, Jon, but maybe that's not what you want to hear. ;) But her voice is certainly sweet and that's probably what makes me think that. Anyway, very, very nice job all around. Great to hear you once again! :) Did anyone ever tell you you have an accent?

I remember this from before. Very evocative of the era for sure. Guitar sounds really nice where it comes in around 2:15. I think you need to do some more work on the vox though. For me, they don't quite sit right spacially speaking ( I struggle with this all the time - one of the hardest things to do IMHO) and I can hear where the clips begin and end - especially so at the beginning. I'm no expert here, but I would try using a noise gate to bring the background noise down. Sometimes I find that getting the gate setting where it needs to be to do that, will end up cutting off the ends of words, so in that case I bring it back up so that it doesn't cut any words off and then elongate the clips and put fades in at either end. Might well be entirely the wrong way to go about it, but it works for me.

Jon, this new version is really excellent. Mix sounds fantastic through my headphones, as good as anything I hear commercially.

What's the bass on this? Sounds perfect.

What's the bass on this? Sounds perfect.
+1...really shines thru on the chorus.

Really evocative piece, captures a lot of heartache with a "well, what are we gonna do now?" feel. The Mermaid's voice is childlike and sad.

The only issue I have with the mix is more artistic than technical: I would go and bury that snare way back and flood it in reverb. And cut some of the highs on the guitars.

I like the way the song progresses.  The Mermaid really mixes well and adds another dimension to the vocals.   Nice writing.  I really like the song!

Brother Grant - Thanks for the listen...them Mermaids don't come cheap...

    Ed - Thanks.

Herb - Props from you on the writing I really appreciate.

Scott - If they make that movie I promise to have you play on the soundtrack.

Robert(GP) - Glad you like the song, yes, standard progressions are standard because they work well I guess...

    Janet
    - I do have a sweet side so that's precisely what I want to hear on this outing.  And hey! I don't have an accent it's y'all that tawk funny...

btw those that are interested in the Bass patch it is one of my favourites from the Reason Factory soundbank called 'MACCA Beatle Bass' (Hofner Pick Samples), makes me sound a bit like Mooch, no?

Greg - Yes I stopped at a couple of chords getting between the two I know...

    Paulo
    - You are spot on with your comments re the vox.  I mixed this at a really low level and I can hear a lot of noise I would have spent time on clearing out.  Also the spatial quality I totally agree with I'm hearing what you are.  I find the best way of treating my vox is to use a pre-fade send to an empty bus...

James - Thanks for the props on the mix thats a buzz to hear that from you.  The bass patch as I mentioned in my previous post is a Reason default one.

James (Yoyo) - I appreciate your views on the vibe of the song.  You are bang on (as usual) with the mix crits too, the drums are an audio loop so they didn't get the TLC I would have normally given them, and I boosted the air way more than I should have on the final eq before I made the mp3 which has made the guitar highs more brittle than I'd like too.

I enjoyed this also...good to hear you getting vocal in this stuff...and wow...I didn't know you played guitar?! Was a cool listen...man, accents rule! I don't think this would have been as cool with a yank singing on it or talking through it. So much more authority with the Brit accent. LOL! :) Well done, Jon!

What a delicious and delightful vintage-oid diversion!  Middle 2:20 guitars are to die for!

Extremely surreal vibe going on that is exceedingly lovely to my ears!  This transports me to the Pari scenes ... though I've never been to them.  (and rhymes romantically well with Louvre impressionistic paintings)

Genius . . . spot on 60's French ballad.  Loved the acoustic solo.  Mix sounds great on my end.  I could see this piece being used  for Cirque Du Soleil. KUDOS my friend!

Really nice intimate vibe you've captured here JB. Excellent arrangement, and instrument placement. Room for all of it in the mix. Only nit is what sounds like a gate opening on your vocal, with noisy background before, during, and after each line. Other than that, this is damn near perfect!

I'd buy an album of this stuff from you!

Great song, mix and overall vibe.  Although I have no idea what 60's French pop sounded like I love this.

    Cool guitar solo, too.
