    Fur Elise.
Yes, it's been over-used, but it's so deeply haunting, and it stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it.

I think the title of this thread should be changed to "your favorite song evah".  The greatest song ever written surely must have different critical criteria than " I just love it to bits"  shouldn't it??  Not that I dont't have my favorites too.  But really.

Should the greatest song ever written be memorable?  Should it be universally known and adulated?  Should the mere mention of it's title invoke deeply instilled sense memories?

Then how about something like "Happy Birthday"?

Or "Old McDonald Had a Farm"?

    Or "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"?

    I can't name just one..simply cannotdo...

Nantucket Sleighride - Mountain (Divine. Somehow this band got a great feeling of live performance on all their records)

Make Me Smile - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel (as perfect as a pop song can be. "Moonlight Shadow" is even more perfect, but it is so painstakingly polished))

Love Me do - The Beatles    (hypnotizing simplicity, Lennons voice takes you by the b...s)

Heavy Horses - Jethro Tull (...out of breath)

    Russ Abbott - Atmosphere

    Seriousness aside.

There are so many where I envy the ability of the writer and they are often in genres that I wouldn't normally listen too. Too many to list but here's one of them by Umberto Bindi.  The newly burgeoning market for 'Pop' in the 50's and 60's lacked writers and many highly skilled writers moved in from film and theatre filling the void and making it a golden age for some truly sublime songs.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttTZL8YPXls

Another source of great material was prompted by the revival of the Anglican church in the latter half of the 19th century which led to many of the momentous hymns we used sing at school as children and makes for another rich era to inspire todays writers.

But all of that just betrays my particular preference for formal structure and succinct 3-4 minute songs that's all.

Given my predilection for melody, I tend to equate "greatest song" with "greatest melody". Some favorites that come to mind based on that criterion:

    Ave Maria
    Für Elise
    Pachelbel's Canon
Solveig's Song from Peer Gynt Suite

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Jungleand is a great choice. I'm not really a huge springsteen fan but it is a great song.

I learned it on piano a while back and it took ages. The song has about 10 parts, two key changes, and very few repeats. Quite the piano workout.

OH!  You changed the title!  Mine is NOT the best song ever written, but it IS my favorite of all time, which has more to do with circumstance and events surrounding the song and it's era... but it's "Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order, followed closely by Portishead's "Sour Times" and "Here Comes Alice" by the Jesus and Mary Chain.

I could also very easily go with U2's Pride (In the Name of Love) or The Cure's Pictures of You, but then no one would respect me.

And you thought I'd say something by Dylan.  I know you all did.

I'm gonna have to go with "Amazing Grace".  To me a great song has an affect on people; what song has had more of an affect than "Amazing Grace"?? Except maybe Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On".
