The Impact - Mixed By Jamesyoyo
Good Afternoon Everyone. Here is a labour of love (and hate), that i have been struggling with for the last few months. *Updated To Include A More Somber Ending, and now mixed by jamesyoyo* Yoyo Mix I came across this video on the discovery channel and really liked it, so I set out to compose some music to it, but it was a lot harder than i first envisioned. I would really love to hear any comments or suggestions on how to improve this as i want to try and get it right. Thanks Mark.

Ah yes, the ELE (Extinction Level Event...) We are the only species to have lived on this planet with the means to prevent its own extinction. However, we've de-funded our space program and pee money away on social programs. It's not a question of if a large body will impact the earth, it's a question of when it will happen, but sadly, it will happen. Nice music for the end of the world :-)

Wow - this is great (listen 4x so far). I think you did a terrific job - I can only imagine how much effort went into this. There are DNA traces of Ennio Morricone and Akira Ifukube in there somewhere (two of my fav composers) . As far as improving it - I am not qualified to say much. Intro sets the mood really well and the sudden lull at 0:50 works really well. I do love the way your track softens up as we see the earth from afar (at 1:54) and the cone of light rising up into the atmosphere - that was a perfect match of visual and music. It’s just a super job all around. There are several little themes in there that all stand up well - a fitting track that I would enjoy had I been watching on tv.

Hey Mark, I've had days like that. Rather interesting serene piece for total anhilation, makes it very abstract. Nice changes in the arrangement, very pretty piece. That fact that you didn't give in to the temptation to use a more minor key for darkness is cool. Daryl

Mark, a few years ago, you posted a song that I was a little bit dismissive of. I think I said the work was done by the library. I have always regretted that. I did not understand the complexities and nuance of what you had achieved at the time, but I do now. I think this is a remarkable composition on many levels. Outstanding work.

I can only comment on how I reacted to it, and I don't believe that I have any special knowledge or skill. My first reaction was that it was too light and airy between 2:00 and 3:00. It sounded better and was more fitting on subsequent listens, but on the first pass I was thinking that it wasn't minor enough. I do think that it could be just a bit more minor and dramatic between 4:00 and 4:15. Around here it seemed to me to have a sound of success and prevailing instead of 'the end of everything.' Not criticizing the music here, just trying to explain how I reacted to it emotionally. Glen

I agree with Glen. In that, the music didn't seem to portray the doom and gloom of it all. I think the music was great. Just didn't fit the mood to me. Since this site is 'about the music', I hope that's not negative cause as I said the music was great......

Wow! The first time that I looked at this I might have agreed with Glen and Tim, but at my second look I realized that the music is spot on. To me throughout the beginning and middle portions the music highlighted the majesty (probably the wrong descriptive word) of physics and the physical laws that govern the natural universe. Rather than indicating pending doom, the music helped with the observation of the power of natural systems and its impressive nature. As human structures and then the entire planet collapsed due to the massive energy released, to me, the music seemed to have a more reflective, melancholy perspective. Excellent work!!! Kudos also to the animation team that created this video.

I don't think there's any way you can improve this masterpiece. It's spot on and perfect. Even though the music settles down, I think it fits very well. It has a melancholy feel to it as the world is being destroyed, which is how I would feel to such an event. Brilliant, Mark. Absolutely brilliant!

The application of the music to the video could use some improvement IMO. I agree with timidi. The sadness of your score related well to the loss of all life on Earth. The tragedy of it all was not emphasized enough int he music. After the meteor hit, I would expect very tense and emotion driven music that make us feel for the loss we are seeing. Later, as the post-event is in progress, your saddened theme works well. I think you need more contract of emotions for such an epic them. I hope I am communicating this well to you. Super job. I want to hear more. Glad to have experienced your vision. Rimshot

Personally Mark, I'm glad you didn't go the obvious dark and doomy route. The serenity of the music has a much more chilling inevitability about it to my mind. Lovely work.

I also agree with Glen, Tim & Rim... the music conflicted with video's depiction of extream violence inflicted on the planet... that said, I loved the music... it really was wonderful... fine work Mark... What about the video production credit..?

Hey Mark. Since everyone agreed with me, I figured I was probably wrong. So, I watched again. What I got this time was the beautiful simplicity of it all (the event). However devastating and horrible an event like that would be, within the scope of the power of the universe it was sort of like throwing a stone in the lake.. That, and the magnificance of the power of the universe. That said, that analogy is probably to deep for the masses eating popcorn (maybe) So, on a commercial level I'd probably agree with my original statements. But, then again, being that it is what it is, if it WAS indeed released in theatres it would carry itself very well in that everyone would probably feel quite uncomfortable with the sereneness and beauty of the music while watching the video unfold thence you've delivered the goods.... There. I knew I was wrong. LOL.... There ain't no right or wrong Mark..........

Wow guys, I am very humbled with a lot of the comments on here and thank you all so very much. I will reply to each and every one of you personally in time. In regards to the mood, I was trying to stay away from the commercial elements that are out there at the moment and was looking for quiet chaos. The part at the very end where it feels uplifting as the earth is turning was intended that way as a sign of hope for revival, that is until the earth turns showing the actual impact, where hopefully the music changes the mood at that precise time, making you feel that there is no chance of revival. I have took a lot of the comments on board and am working on an alternate ending version where it is more minor, as well as cleaning up a lot of the mix. As when listening over again, there are some mistakes that need ironing out. Again, thank you all so much. Mark.

In light of the comments, I just listened and didn't watch the video. You get such great movement with the orchestra...I should take some lessons from you on that. That being said, the mix is kinda lifeless. It might take me 30 minutes to get it big wide and dramatic, if you are so interested. PM if you are.

great piece of music Mark, if you were scoring to the video, you might want a change of pace around 2'09, and you'll prob want to invest in a decent brass library to complete the effect, but wow bro, from those humble beginnings a few years ago it's amazing to see the change in your music!

ahhh ... i wrote about this piece, as a reply to you in my thread .. i didnt notice this thread on it.. ma bad ... Copied and pasted the reply in here .. cos its where it belongs ... I love the words you wrote about yourself, in your youtube chanel ... haa .. made me laugh .. briliant .. That 'impact' footage is quite powerful eh ... as i was watching it .. it kinda reminded me of a strange thought i get when listening to Simon & garfunkels 'El condor pasa' ... When the song plays, i imagine the irony of looking out the window, and seeing a huge meteor or something come into our sky, careering towards me .. and all i can do is wait motionless as i continue to listen to 'yes i would, if i only could' ... The irony of having to listen to that wee happy song while watching my imminent doom hurl towards me kinda humours me in some sick way .. Thats exactly the effect i get when watching teh impact, and listening to your happy music ... i wasnt sure if should say that or not, cos i dont want to sound offensive, and i do like it ... But then i see you wrote 'your goal is to create musical ironies' ... If this is what you meant by musical ironies .. then you should know it worked perfectly for me if not .. then please ignore those last 2 rambling paragraphs ;) ETA - the music makes me feel like i should be rolling around in a field of poppies .. while the video shows land turned to spewing lava .. ha ha :D

Without doubt it's a fine composition. Does it fit the images ? I listened the first time without looking at the vid as I was doing something else (see it's not just women that can multi-task) and just enjoyed it for what it was. Having read the other comments which I always do afterwards so that I can listen without the views of others colouring my judgment, I went back and watched the vid too. Having done so, I'm on the fence to be honest. I see what you were going for, but when I listened first time without the images it didn't bring those kind of images to mind. That said, I kind of agree with those that like the meloncholy feel towards the end. It would be interesting to hear your mix v yoyos as an A/B as I thought you did pretty well, but I'm sure he will manage to sprinkle some magic dust over it somehow.
