dubdisciple ps i forgot one more thing in the whole big brand thing you mentioned. In the software world the big names are still enjoying success and there sems to be no direct correlation to piracy. Adobe, a company with products arguably pirated as much as any is far more profitable than many of the big names with much less piracy. Even looking at music plugins, the Gibsons and Fenders of that world seem to do well or not so well regardless of protection. Again, not trying to say piracy is good, just that it seems to have no quantifiable relation to to sales of this kind of product. People DO find a way to buy what they want, but that is the key phrase; "what they want". I doubt the kid who downloads Fl stufio has the same kind of want that the kid who has ben dreaming of a Les Paul Custom has and is much more inclined to do without
Good points - especially that the big brands own the smaller guys and knock off. I guess that that does put things in a different perspective. Maybe a better comparison would have been the dozens of folks I know who build boutique pedals and custom guitars and parts. If people could take their products without paying, I have a really, really tough time believing that it wouldn't affect their sales. If Fruity Loop wasn't available for download, maybe many kids still wouldn't buy it - but I can tell you first hand that there are dozens of guys who would have to buy it or something else. I can't tell you how many "DJ's" I met who made money with a cracked copy of FL or Reason. I also know many studio owners who would have to buy those Waves plug-ins or accept not to be "competitive" (in their own eye). If the free alternative wasn't there, I'm sure some of those kids would prefer to put that $10 on an album than on a flashy baseball cap or whatever else. That's the reason why my friends and I had so few things when we were kids - we put whatever money we had on music. Given the option to have music for free, it would have been pretty tempting to put money on other things we wanted. To say the least. If only 1 out of those 10 kids who download FL would have bought it, that's still 1 lost sale. If the 9 others are regarded as irrelevant one way, it has to go both ways - the fact that the majority wouldn't pay doesn't mean that there isn't a loss of profit.

Rain, I see your point. I think they would have to find a way to eliminate the alternatives completely. Fl studio was not always popular with the wannabe hip-hop set. In late 90's and early 2000's the MPC ruled hip-hop and then the Yamaha Motiff when the Neptunes sound was big. Software based production in hip-hop was pro tools on high end and Reason on lower end. fact, I suspect it was Reason's increase in security that helped boost the popularity of FL. More of the kids I come across using cracked software tend to be using older versions. I work with a lot of urban youth and always steer them towards legal alternatives. Another reason FL Studio is big among these kids is you can create a usable "beat" in one sitting using just the demo. You can't save project files but you can export a finished stereo track with full use of instruments and effects. It's a crappy but fully legal option to stealing.

On a related note, I think Spotify and Pandora are a greater threat to the music industry under the current model than outright piracy because this is a case where willing customers are leaning more towards this route and the payoff to artists so far is very low.

So when Cakewalk bought out products they really haven't made improvements. Aren't those Sonitus plugins still only 32 bit? That is usually the case when most products by another developer without hiring the developer. I wonder if this is a situation where they were bought out and told to keep quiet. There could also be a legal infringement. Maybe the development team had a falling out. I hate the speculation. Well Cakewalk is still here.

Before Rene left, The RGC products were improved and new products were under development. Dim Pro and Rapture were created after acquisition. Z3ta also got a new version after Rene left. Hard to know what would have happened if he had stayed. Going into hypothetical land, I assume Camel Audio is more than pone person, so the same scenario would be less likely.

dubdisciple One of the things that drives me nuts about software companies going out of business is it seems to awaken the amatuer mathematicians that go on rants about how piracy did the company in. I have already read several and I have yet to see one person show any evidence that pirates suddenly begin buying products they were pirating if they can no longer pirate.
There was thread on the Image Line forums where admitted crack users eventually bought the software. Why did they stop? It wasn't because they could still crack it. Once they saved the money they bought it. Having excellent support was one of the reasons they went legit.

Wonder why guys like Sonnox, SSL, Kush Audio, Eventide, Avid, Exponential Audio et al use iLok2 if piracy does not matter? Presumably they have a pretty good feel for the situation. Then you get all the pinheads, not understanding elasticity of demand saying " if you charged half, you'd sell double" as if these top dsp coders are a pack of morons.
Even when developers say they don't care about the piracy component they sometimes care. Eg Hornet plugins who had a "I know you are not going to leak it on the internet, so no copy protection for you" philosophy, recently changed his mind and added a type of watermark because he saw some of his work floating around warez sites.
Where is the evidence that piracy does not dent sales?

They work in any DirectX host but unlike VST, there is no bridge for DirectX. IOW, 32bit DirectX plug-ins require a 32bit DirectX host, 64bit DirectX plug-ins require a 64bit DirectX host. A VST host is not necessarily a DirectX host too.

I think the timing is also important of when this has come to light, I was on the camel site the other week.. as it's also the end of January for the tax returns etc. ? so having no sales no, there is a cut of point for the finance people to work from. if anyone does want a reminder of the sound packs for it.. this is from wayback machine it didn't like the link , so I URL shortned it with google.. http://goo.gl/TRzpXS I was tempted to buy artificial intelligence, but didn't .. ah well

BTW they are probably not closing due to piracy. One of the few useful things I saw amongst the 50+ pages of FUD is that apparently you can find the financials of UK companies on line, and that they were doing pretty well. I also doubt that they are a VATMOSS casualty because they would probably have posted something about it, much like the HS's of the world. Here's hoping that they sold out to someone who will keep the product alive for a long time on both platforms.

1) The burden of proof is on the person making the assertion of a truth. One cannot prove a negative. 2) If people taking measures against something was proof in and of itself it was justified, then the same form of logic would prove some of the most insane conspiracies on the planet. Without figures showing . 3) i did not say piracy did not matter. i said piracy is unrelated to sales.

Look, I'm not going to play the "appeal to authority" game because it would just be us taking turns presenting fallacies. I have seen other people with just as much experience say the opposite and purposely resisted posting links to articles, quotes etc because all it proves is that when it comes to subjective topics, people quote those who they agree with and ignore those they don't. So, show me some concrete, objective sales figures and i will be glad to look at them.

I know enough to walk away when someone is determined to be right. For me it was not about "right vs wrong" (especially since i don't feel our positions are polar opposites). I simply stated that i have not seen one shred of quantifiable proof that shows sales increase or decrease relative to the degree of an applications security. I think Rain has a very similar view to yours but is not nearly as confrontational about it. it is human nature to feel that our opinion is somehow fact and some of us are more passionate about it than others. To me the idea that this mythical poll would prove anything other than how many people share your opinion and would still not give a definitive answer. I'm just not that close to it to continue such a silly pissing contest. Last thing i want is another thread having to be shut because of people hellbent on being right. So I will leave this alone because i doubt anyone is going to change their opinion in the slightest.

I say don't sweat it. If someone takes it over then good but even if it gets dumped it is also not bad either. How far do you want it to be developed. It is developed now and it works fine. Most of you would not even be scratching 1% of that synths abilities. I know I have spent a lot of time with it already and I feel that way now. All you need to do by June this year is download the latest version of the program, any sound sets that you have bought and the latest version of the presets file. (you should have these already backed up by now but at least there is plenty of time to do it) I am sure it can be reinstalled and used on future systems at anytime. The only thing is support and I imagine there is a lot of info on it out there now and will continue to be. What is sad is not being able to buy the sound sets you did not have or the full version of the program if you only have the player.

Jeff Evans I am sure it can be reinstalled and used on future systems at anytime. Unless we're dealing with simple .dll, I would not be so sure, Jeff. Dimension Pro and Rapture were two of my favorite synths, and an integral part of my workflow until I upgraded the studio computer, recently. It is impossible to install them on recent versions of Mac OS - and the reason I managed to use them until recently was that I was still on an old installation. Since I already knew that before the upgrade, I rendered tracks which made use of either synth before moving to the new computer. Furthermore, knowing that they were on their last miles, I hesitated to start any new projects with them for the last few months. I'd hate to have to go through the same thing with Alchemy - I already use very few 3rd party synths, and having lost two of my work horses, it would have an impact on the way I work. So I'm crossing fingers that this is only a transition period.

Yes Rain you have got me thinking on that one now. It is not a simple DLL. I would be disappointed for sure if at some stage it could not be installed. It is one of my fave synths too. I don't think there is anything quite like it around. (mainly loop based patches I am talking here as well) Just goes to show how the hardware in some ways has a much longer life.

Fortunately, Camel used a simple license file, so at least authentication won't be an issue if you have a full backup. But you can't assume it'll continue to work forever. All it takes is one propellerhead at Microsoft to make one arbitrary decision and any plugin you own could become obsolete. Obsolescence is baked into the whole hardware/software ecosystem. SampleTank2 and Miroslav won't run on my new DAW because the vendor decided 64-bit support was only feasible with a brand-new product. I cannot re-install Adobe Audition on my new DAW, because it wants to connect to a now-nonexistent authentication server. And those are two companies that are still breathing. Imagine, all you Waves users, if Waves suddenly went out of business and shut down their authentication server. You could only continue to use them as long as you never made any changes to nor upgraded your computer. There's even been a word coined for it: being kjaerhused. Most of you will know the origin of that word even if you haven't seen it before. It's not just Waves, of course - they just have the most convoluted and fragile process. You are at risk with every product that uses a challenge-response authorization scheme. That includes popular favorites such as U-he, Fabfilter, Spectrasonics and Native Instruments. But not Camel Audio. BTW, I think both points of view regarding piracy's impact on sales are valid. I've no doubt that sales would be higher if piracy could somehow be eliminated without draconian measures (e.g. iLok hurts sales). At the same time, I seriously doubt that any significant fraction of pirates would have paid for their booty if stealing hadn't been an option. It's a cultural thing, not new, and unrelated to the consumer's ability to pay. (Years ago, Microsoft caught the U.S. Air Force running millions of dollars' worth of bootleg copies of MS Office.) It's more about software being perceived as value-less because it's nonmaterial. Either way, I don't think it has anything to do with Camel's passing. They were doing OK financially. My own (unsubstantiated) theory is that the owner (I believe it's solely owned by one person) simply decided to retire. The pending major release of Alchemy greatly enhances the value of his intellectual property, which explains the timing. So who's the buyer? Everyone seems to assume that it's a major player in the music software scene such as Yamaha or Avid. But it could as easily be the Camel employees buying out their boss. Or some other UK- or EU-based manufacturer with cash in their pockets. G-Force, Tone2, or FXPansion would be good candidates, but probably aren't flush with cash. Focusrite?

I've got several bits of software that won't upgrade to new OS etc. I used to keep old computers around for just such stuff (Komplexer being the one I miss most). At some point, unless Alchemy is picked up, it will be too much of a hassle to keep. And it is my favorite synth and nothing does all it does in a single package (plus it is a package I am familiar with). So let's hope someone is buying the company and putting Alchemy 2 or Gold or whatever it is called out w/ new libraries. If not Gibson, then some one other than apple. @

I'm thinking that any company with a limited product line is very vulnerable. How can you keep the revenue coming in when the entire company is one product? Kind of like a guitar company that only makes one model. Eventually, those that want it, will get it, and then how do you make money?

Camel was putting out libraries that apparently sold pretty well and weren't exactly cheap (not Hollow sun cheap, anyway). That was in the meantime while they were working on Alchemy 2. But yea, you would think they might have released a few more effects, too. @
