bitflipper I cannot re-install Adobe Audition on my new DAW, because it wants to connect to a now-nonexistent authentication server.
Just an FYI You can download a version AA3 from Adobe that doesn't use the authentication server for free. Dan

However, I've made three failed attempts to download that "freed" version. (BTW, why on earth is an audio editor 4.5 gigabytes in size anyway???) It wouldn't be so bad if there was anything else out there (that's not rented from Adobe) with a comparable feature set to AA3. Oh sure, there's Sound Forge. But I'm still boycotting Sony for distributing malware. UPDATE: This conversation prompted me to give Adobe one more shot, and to my surprise and delight, I now have AA3 back in my arsenal. Woo hoo! Turned out only 353 MB of that 4.5 GB was actually needed. The rest was apparently some loop library I'd never used. I might even give Waves another shot now...um, on second thought, nah.

OEM copies of CS5.5 and CS6 are still available in places. I used CS5.5 which is AA4 (was rewritten with no MIDI support).

Rain Considering what happened w/ René and RGC, I wouldn't be too excited if Gibson/Cakewalk had acquired them. Rapture and Dimension both had the potential to develop into something like Alchemy...
During the period between Cakewalk acquiring RGC and Roland acquiring Cakewalk, there were a few things happening. DP, Rapture, P5... During the Roland years the biggest new softsynth was Beatscape. I'm not sure what direction Gibson is going. After a year of owning Cakewalk they haven't really shown signs of having grand plans. Maybe during NAMM more will be revealed.

Ah, the golden age of Cakewalk for me... :) Despite my apprehensions, somehow, it would kind of make sense if Cakewalk acquired Alchemy, maybe even more so because they (seem to) have given up on developing DP and Rapture, and Alchemy is an evolution of the technology behind those. And in the end, if Cakewalk sells a product I can use, I'm always happy to indulge.

They also didn't release anything during the forth quarter, so it's definitely not business as usual...

Even worse is that if Apple takes it over that will certainly spell the end of PC versions for newer releases of the synth and its sound libraries. Remember Logic 5.5. After I had spent over $2500 on Logic all following versions were MAC only. I was not happy as were many others at the time. What I do these days is if I build a new PC I keep the old one (completely intact) and integrate it into the system and treat it like a musical instrument. All you need to do is to link it via midi and audio and you can keep using all your previous versions of everything for many years after. I have two computers operating this way in conjunction with my main machine. They also spread the load around and can do things while your main machine is doing other things etc..

Brilliant. Or it's Microsoft that's the new owner; there will now be daily updates automatically downloaded to fix the bugs introduced in yesterday's automatic update. The good news is it'll be DirectX and compatible with XBox360. Worse scenario: IKM is the new owner; Alchemy 2 will be pushed back to 2019 so they can get the iOS version ready by Christmas. Even worse scenario: Waves is the new owner; Alchemy now runs in a proprietary shell that randomly falls over and demands re-authorization unless you've paid protection money. Alchemy 2 and Alchemy 1 cannot be installed on the same computer. Worse worse scenario: Steinberg is the new owner; they'll be skipping Alchemy 2 and going straight to Alchemy 3, which will only run in Cubase until every other DAW vendor has rewritten their respective applications.

Hmmm ... I guess I'm in the minority in not viewing an IK acquisition as a bad thing. With IK, we'd have continued reasonable pricing (via frequent sales if nothing else) and we'd have an assurance that the product will continue to be multi-platform, which would not be the case with Apple, in all probability. I don't know the details of IK's business, but I don't see them being quite big enough to acquire CA. I don't give the Apple acquisition theory too much credence. It just doesn't make sense unless Apple has identified the need for resynthesis technology or something like that and would buy CA for the technology but not the product line. I just can't see Apple wanting to acquire a highly focused musical product. I do hope I'm right on this, however. Steinberg would not be all that bad either, at least for folks who run Cubase and already have an eLicenser. That would be the major probable downside of a Steinberg acquisition - a dongle becoming a near certainty. Otherwise, I think it would be healthy for the CA product line (plus we Cubase folks might get Camel Phat and Space as freebies in the next release of Cubase). NI certainly has suitable size to be a contender, but that one just doesn't feel right for some reason I can't put my finger on. Izotope might be OK as the new owner, other than the upgrades to Alchemy 2 would be seriously overpriced. But at least we'd be assured of longevity and continued multi-platform support.

As I mentioned earlier, Apple already has a very, very capable developer team when it comes to synths and effects. They can pull just about anything. If they wanted to come up with an equivalent to Alchemy, I'm convinced that they could do it w/o acquiring anything. Their current synths and effects line up show that. Their electric piano and organ are at the very least right up there with the best of them. Their sampler, EXS-24, and the way it integrates with Logic, is unrivalled. ES-2 is an awesome synth, but people tend to overlook it because it's not buried in effects. Sculpture is an incredibly sophisticated synth, reminiscent of Wolfgang Palm's PLEX. Their new Retro Synth covers subtractive, FM and Wavetable more than adequately. Despite the busy GUI, Ultrabeat is an amazing beatbox/step sequencer. And their new Drum Designer is a step into the future of virtual drummers. It's not simply an watered down alternative to a 3rd party package like EZ or SD. You don't usually find anything on the level of those plug-ins included in any other DAW - unless it's a licensed 3rd party plug. The way I see it, Apple does not have one René - they an entire team of Renés developing synths for them.

I think it's safe to say Apple doesn't need Camel. I also agree about Ultrabeat. It's a beast despite being hideous. I know most won't agree but I think FL Studio's sampler is on par with Logic's in terms of integration. IMHO, FL is more like a sampler on steroids than a DAW. I don't think FL's sampler has the power to create complex, articulated instruments like Exs24 but most are not using FL for that anyway. A testament to how tightly integrated the sampler is the fact many users do not realize the default instrument is indeed a sampler.

scook The Sonitus DirectX plug-ins were ported to 64bit some time ago.
Do these only work in Sonar? I tried loading them in a VST host. Is DirectX 64 bit capable?
They work in any DirectX host but unlike VST, there is no bridge for DirectX. IOW, 32bit DirectX plug-ins require a 32bit DirectX host, 64bit DirectX plug-ins require a 64bit DirectX host. A VST host is not necessarily a DirectX host too.
I'm still confused. When I install 64bit SONAR are my Sonitus plugs 64bit?

None of the Logic synths are anything like Alchemy especially when Alchemy is in its rhythmical mode. There is nothing like it anywhere. It is in a league of its own. It also sounds better than most Logic synths which all tend to sound quite similar, except for ESX24 which does have a sound more of its own. But that is quite old now compared to some of the more modern and interesting modern synths out there. I have got the ESX24 installed on two computers and still use it quite a lot too. It can sound quite fat and organic in its own way. Alchemy is wild though.

mike_mccue You can use Plugin manager to figure out if your plugins list is pointing at the 64bit DX or the 32bit VST files.
But I'm confused NOW and I'n not at my DAW now. Seems like the "helpful" days are over.

Well, we disagree. Though I never said Alchemy was similar to anything in Logic. Just that they could do something similar. Of course, there are redundant, similar synths in Logic - and they are designed to be. ES-M, ES-P and all of those are CPU-efficient synths, focusing on one form of synthesis. And then you have the big brother, ES-2 itself, which is extremely versatile. I get that someone may not particularly like it. I do. EXS-24 is no Kontakt, but then, Kontakt is no EXS-24. And the integration with the host is a key element. If you're into sampling and creating instruments, layering them, it's actually pretty hard to beat. Structure is an entirely different beast. I don't know how it could be regarded as sounding like any other Logic synths - or any other synth, beside PLEX, only, a lot more exhaustive and potentially a lot more complex. The new Retro Synth sounds a lot warmer, smooth, and quite unlike any of Logic's other synths, although it covers the same basic forms of synthesis. The B3 and the electric piano are still both highly regarded, and heard on countless records. I do have NI's Retro Organs as a back up, which I like quite a bit. And then there's the drummer, totally unique and way ahead of its time. Which brings me back to my point - they have the resource to design or create something like Alchemy.
