I have very fond memories of sneaking into my older brothers room and pilfering 12" vinyls from his collection - one of my early favorites was Deep Purple's "Machine Head". I've also been fortunate to see Blackmore in concert twice, once with Rainbow (unfortunately in the Joe Lynn Turner era and not with RJD at the microphone) and once with Deep Purple in support of the "Perfect Strangers" album. I know he influenced my playing in those early developmental days when I first started the guitar.

daryl1968 FastBikerBoy Er......... sorry I thought this was going to be a thread about The Stranglers..... carry on. NOW you're talking my era - love Hugh Cornwell, The Cure, The The, Violent Femmes - real artists - not these posing axe wielding guys with too much hair. Sorry USA, the UK did the eighties so much better :) I've seen Hugh Cornwell a couple of times since he left The Stranglers. Also had the pleasure of chatting to him about the recording process he used for "Hoover Dam" while he was touring with film about how it was made a few years ago. He Recorded it at Toe Rag Studios completely live on a four track IIRC. How on earth he managed without endless tracks, pitch correctors, audio stretch tools and everything else God only knows. He kept pronouncing Protools in a very strange way more like Prot ools, I didn't correct him or ask him about his opinion of Sonar though. He also tours in the States a lot, probably more than here. I only catch him very occasionally, I don't think he likes East Anglia. Understandable I guess....

I know he influenced my playing in those early developmental days when I first started the guitar. Randy Rhoads made me want to play electric guitar, so I had an inclination for the classical stuff right from the beginning. So going back to Blackmore was a natural "evolution". I'm still a bit sad at the immature/self-preserving reflex I had to steer away from all the classical stuff when Yngwie came along - he sayeth while Far Beyond the Sun played in the back. I could imagine eventually being a decent enough player to pick up some of Rhoads and Blackmore's stuff, but Malmsteen was way too much for me to handle. Still, when I sit back, I certainly hear Rhoads influence in my playing - and to a certain extent Blackmore - even 28 years later. The good thing is that I've outgrown my ego issues so I have plenty of things to learn going back to those guys.

Rain - :) you wouldn't ask him for singing tips either really but he does rule :) FBB - 2 or 3 Stranglers tunes I would rate in my top whatever of all time. 'Strange Little Girl' and (I know it's corny but I don't care) 'Golden Brown'. What's wrong with East Angular?

I dislike my own voice so much that even Robert Smith's advices would be welcome. ;) I did a cover of The Funeral Party a few years ago. It remains instrumental to this day. I just can't figure out how to "sing" it. Even singing Joy Division is almost easy by comparison.

Bestest Strangliers track - Straighten Out Although I am quite fond of Karl's fave - Go Buddy Go - I still have the 7" double A-side (w/Peaches) single.

I didn't get into DeepPurple much when I first got into playing guitar(1984).But,now I listen to them and Rainbow quite a bit. What(who) led me to check out Richie Blackmore was when I got into Yngwie Malmsteen and he said that Blackmore was an influence,YM and I think Vinnie Moore said the same thing.

What's wrong with East Angular? It's where all the untalented people live, under bridges I believe. @Steve. My favourite Stranglers track changes like the wind although Go Buddy Go is one of those. Relentless from Suite XVI is right up there at the moment.

@Steve, thanks for the link on Lazy.....I truly enjoyed that. After getting into Blackmore, Page, and Randy Rhoads, this just got me looking into all the other technical guitarists like Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Al Di Meola, EVH etc..... The early 70's guitarist just opened up many, many doors to various styles and influences. When I first started learning to play rock guitar, one of my uncles actually discouraged me in saying that eruption by VH was all electronic sounds.....of course that just became my motivation/inspiration to learn it and show him what I had learned a year later. But, all of this wouldn't have been possible without RB, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Beck all the blues greats etc.....
