The other man in black...

Cleaning up the house, iTunes does it's thing in the background and all of sudden I'm rediscovering Rainbow - Rising - and thinking what an amazing musician Ritchie Blackmore is. And then I log into FB and see that it's the man's birthday today.

So I lift up this Grolsch, from one humble man in black w/ a strat to the man in black w/ the strat...

Blackmore favorites, anyone?

    Oh yeah....
Remember the cover with the guitar castle?
Well that album and a bottle of Jack Daniels and it wound up
tatoo'd on my right shoulder blade. Just the castle that is.

Cool!  I tend to play in a bit of his style (albeit without the scalloped fretboard) because one of the guys who taught me (Craig Goldy) was a big fan of his (and finally met the man himself when he went on to play with Dio).

I still haven't listened to his newest folk-rock project with his wife though (Blackmore's Night).  Should be interesting.

Forgot to mention that my favorite would probably be Perfect Strangers.

Craig I think the "Castles & Dreams" DVD is most excellent.

I'm ashamed to admit that I got my first taste of DP w/ Perfect Strangers, back in the mid eighties. Actually, it must be one of the first riffs I've learned when I started playing electric guitar. BTW, to avoid trouble, the words "touch" and "youth" should be at least 10 words apart from each other in any sentence for people your age. ;)

Cool one, Spacey. Unfortunately, besides a few scars, I didn't keep much from my drinking days.

Craig - Craig Goldy?! Man, me and my buddies really looked up to that guy. We were big fans of Vivian, and we weren't too sure what to expect when we heard he was out of Dio's band, but Goldy won us over. He also played in Rough Cutt for a while I think, right?

    Triumph1 - Timeless one indeed!

Yep - right after that I got to play with him in Foolish Pleasure (which you won't find listed anywhere since it only existed for about six weeks before he was off to help form Guiffria).  He's a year older than me and grew up about three blocks away.  My first guitar was one of his old ones.  I only got the chance to be in that band because I had no ambition to play leads - lol!  It was fun while it lasted but, not long after that, I broke my arm and that ended my guitar playing for several years.

I'm very fond of both of the first two albums - Rising and RB's Rainbow. I still have the LPs up in the loft.

I bought Long Live Rock 'n' Roll but sort of gave up on them a bit after Ronnie left, although the more commercial stuff they did with Graham Bonnet wasn't too bad.

My favourite tracks from the early Rainbow are Man On The Silver Mountain and Stargazer - you can definitely hear shades of Holy Diver and Last In Line from RJD on those tracks.

I join you, Rain, in lifting a toast to the man in black on his birthday.
While he has done plenty since then, I can't help but favor Lazy. Yes, it was 40 years ago, but it was priceless.
The interplay between him and Lord is awesome, and his facial expressions on that old B&W video just kill me every time I see it.

I'm with you Robert on favoring Lazy......it's always been one of my favs. as well ever since I heard DP's Made in Japan. I like this album over the studio versions and actually learned the live versions before I had a chance to even listen to the studio version.

Lazy is also a huge favorite of mine.

I'll have to check out that Castles and Dreams DVD Spacey mentioned.

Like you Mesh, this made me feel like digging out a couple of Dio albums. Never owned them on CD though, and the vinyls are long gone, so I guess I'll settle for iTunes.

I've always admired Blackmores style, the way he makes really strong riffs which are fluent like mercury, not edgy, not forced, not superficially virtuoso-boasting. Something that makes you think: Yeah, that's the way that one has to be played.

Pre-EVH, Blackmore strikes me as one of the most "fluid" sounding fast players in hard rock - the opposite of Jimmy Page - even if Page is probably my biggest influence.

Funny, because the other guy I look up to in terms of fluidity, clarity and tight sound pre EVH is Tommy Bolin, who replaced him in DP. That kid had quite a touch and a tone too, though he had a different approach.

I absolutely love The Cure. I don't think I'd ever ask Robert Smith to give me a guitar lesson though...
