I realise I'm being part of the problem even replying in this thread, but I think all internet forums have a problem, and it's this. Whatever the topic of the forum, there will always be people who have no real interest in the topic, but for some reason are obsessed with the (largely imaginary) forum politics. I'm sure drillbits.com has a few members who've never wielded a drill in their lives, but write long rambling posts about how driller Bob shouldn't have said that thing about driller Jane's opinion that time. Despite the fact that Jane and Bob get along perfectly well. I raise this simply to say: we're best off, as a community, when we just ignore these distractions, and that's exactly what I'm going to get on with doing after posting this. None of this is about the OP, by the way. They're right; the search function could be better. Fair point.

Orphaned at Birth
kevinwal So you're going to dump Sonar because the forum search function is lame? Perhaps I misunderstood your post, but that's how it sounds to me. Have you tried the help docs or google? Or perhaps even consider asking a question yourself? There's lots of people here who are happy to assist you in becoming proficient with Sonar.
In all fairness, I think it mat be more the case, and indicative of the fact that the OP has had enough of the attitude, the culture, which seems to be pervasive, might I say systemic in the Cakewalk world. Let me explain . . . The forum search feature being broken, and broken for a long time, complained about over and over for a long time, and yet nothing is done about it. Instead 'workarounds' are thrown at the user, never mind that it takes more steps and is an inconvenience to the user. "There you go, you have a workaround, problem solved, no need to worry about that any more" The parallel's, the similarities with how the software, both Sonar and Cakewalks virtual instruments are gob smackingly similar. There are many areas of Sonar which are just plain broken, people have complained about them for years, still complain about them and still nothing is done. In many cases there will be workarounds thrown to the masses (sound familiar?) Lets not forget the virtual instruments, Z3TA2, I'm sure we are all familiar with that story? Rapture Pro, I'm sure no one will forget the state in which that was released?, how long did we have to wait for that to be brought into a condition where it was even remotely useable for a lot of people? 8 to 10 months that's how long, and for something which it was said at the time to have been in development for a long time (years) and still it landed in the state it did, and still today there are those, many who struggle with it, lets not forget our Mac user friends who still struggle. I may be wrong, but I think that is more along the lines of the OP if you read a little into it and not just look on the surface. And yet he is labelled a 'Troll' with comments like "Somebody get the bug spray. The pests are back" never mind the fact that he has been a member since 2004, yeah I am sure that is plausible, he has just been hanging around for the last 12 years waiting for this day to unleash his master plan, waiting all this time developing his 'trolling' skills, sharpening them to precision. Well done people, you should be proud of yourselves, it is because of people like yourselves that these forums enjoy the reputation they do, well done, take a bow. Then there is this poor fellow don't waste any time, just straight into it, that's the Cakewalk forums way, don't give them a chance, shoot first and ask questions latter, never mind that no self respecting person would bother to return after that, but keep attacking him while he is gone, after all that is the Cakewalk forum way, just ask those on the outside, they know it all to well. Well done people, take another bow, you deserve it !! You know when you think about it, it is really you people who are the 'trolls' you sit there and at the slightest sign of someone turning up with a low post count, or who has just joined, hell . . . after todays effort it doesn't even matter if they have been here for 12 years, and if they don't enter singing the Cakewalk/Sonar mantra, kissing backsides and saying everything is roses, you Cakewalk sock puppets just pounce on them, again it's the Cakewalk forum way, it's a well known thing. It is you people, the sock puppets who are the trolls, worse then those YOU call trolls, far worse. Nothing I have said here is untrue, we both know that, it may be a little hard for you Sock Puppets to stomach, but hey. Take another bow, you all deserve it, just count it as a down payment on the next poor unsuspecting person to foolishly come this way. Well Done!!
Yes I'm with you on this. Using cakewalk since '98, unfriendly/unhelpful forum with malfunctioning search function. Populated by people whose hobby appears to be visiting and posting on the forum multiple times daily. At least one regular poster here has averaged 6 posts a day for the past 13 years!! No wonder they resent intruders. Lots of posts from 'fan boys', (sycophants), wow, a new blue button!!, and those who condemn criticism whilst paying for product updates that will never be used or understood. It's an exclusive members only clique into which normal people people intrude to ask questions or explore issues, which the members/sycophants seem to resent. It should be made into a private members area, and a proper public forum set up in it's place. I'm gone. It would have been nice to shoot the breeze and generally explore sonar here, but clearly, after more than 15 years that ain't going to happen.
I point blank refuse to be as diplomatic as Craig and the others and will state that your post is complete and utter hogwash. "unfriendly/unhelpful forum". Really? since when? Have you actually been on other forums to get a feel for what it's like "out there"? New, genuine posters have repeatedly commented that they can't get over just how knowledgeable and helpful these forums are to new & old users alike. The accumulated wealth of knowledge is staggering and people will bend over backwards trying to help find solutions to all manner of problems. You also state you've been using Cakewalk since 1998 and seem to have an in depth knowledge of the forums but you only registered in January? Complete bollox in my opinion. How about playing with the truth - you don't want to discuss Sonar, you just want to troll.

I just want to add that this forum is absolutely amazing I couldn't imagine being without all the recourses and helpful friendly people who go out of there way to help , I have had a few problematic times where I have wondered if sonar was responsible for this and that , but every time it was my pc or drivers, or me being to tired.
Also I will say I often rewire fl studio and ableton into the PLATINUM BEAST, there are some features of both the others daws that I do like, and platinum handles them like a cup of tea ! (:

Well, you do get undying gratitude, the knowledge that you've made a contribution to a fellow musician, and helped shave a few bucks off the price because the support staff doesn't have to be increased due to people not getting solutions here Anyway, I was in Cakewalk's pocket once, and frankly it was disappointing. There was a fair amount of lint, about 37 cents in change, two flat picks (both medium), and the key to a 1998 Toyota Corolla.

I get so tired of people having to bash other people in the forum just because they state an opinion. Especially when the opinion is valid. I just did a search on "dimension" in the forum. ZERO results! Come on! Here's another great example... many of us in the past have posted that we'd like to see "AUX" tracks in Sonar. Every time whoever posted got hit with people throwing insults and arguments. How DARE someone request that feature... It's now one of the most exciting and praised features to be added in a long time. So please stop bashing the original poster of this thread. Sonar is Awesome. Best DAW available in my opinion. Sonar's forum search SUCKS. its just a fact. Moving on.

I rather like the clean layout of the forum search results. Unencumbered by all those messy results, it makes for amazing clarity. Edit: I stand corrected. Craig has demonstrated below that one can generate endlessly messy results at will if one knows how to properly set search filters. Alas, I must take my search for the clarity of utter emptiness elsewhere.

Again, make sure the preferences are also correct for this search function (use the "Filter" option). Filter defaults to the last 30 days, and I don't think there have been any Dimension posts in the SONAR forum in the past 30 days. If you set the Time Filter to "from the beginning," it will give you a ton of hits.

Edited to reflect the fact that I took so long between writing this and hitting submit. Let me first say that I respect your opinion and the spirit in which it's offered. It does you credit to point out that even the most critical posts may well contain valuable information for the rest of us. Unfortunately, and this is in no way meant as a bash against you, in my opinion, your point doesn't really apply here. I say that because I don't recall seeing people criticizing him specifically for saying the search results suck. They do suck, no one questions that. (Edit: This just in - they don't suck after all, see Craig's post above!) In fact, the majority of the posts on that issue consisted primarily of useful suggestions for effective searches, presumably because they wanted him to get the most out of the forum despite the useless search function. We did that because the purpose of the forum is to help people get the most out of Sonar, so we tend to assume that people bring their problems to the forum to get solutions from other members. And why would we want to provide solutions in this case? People posted helpful tips because they clearly didn't want him to leave. Unfortunately the remainder of his post indicated that he wasn't really interested in engaging in a process of finding solutions that would work for him, that he had no interest in honoring the purpose of the forum nor any respect for the time people would spend helping him, and that's what got everyone's dander up. Imho, the guy didn't want help because he wanted to have another complaint about Cakewalk and Sonar out on a public forum to create a false impression for the unwary that frustrated users are dumping Cakewalk in huge numbers. But in truth it doesn't really matter what his agenda is. It's my opinion that it's just fine if people want to bring problems and frustrations and complaints here. It's my opinion that if the OP wants to dump Sonar for whatever reason he chooses, it's totally his right to say whatever he wants. It's my opinion that people do have a right to post criticisms and complaints, but it's also my opinion that I and others have a right to post ours as well.

A lot of people think I'm an expert because I have answers. Often an answer is based on personal experience. but many times it's just me poking around and trying to solve a problem. I've always used site:forum.cakewalk.com so never bothered to investigate Search. I did use site-wide search but wasn't even tuned in to there being a "search this forum" option. When you pointed it out to me, the first thing I did was to see if it had preferences, it did, there was the answer...2 pages later, but better late than never..

Anderton A lot of people think I'm an expert because I have answers.
Well, that and you are an expert.
