Well,  humor in advertising appeals to the nerd in us. But sexy has the widest appeal.  Think avid advertising: fresh, verdant, fecund. Apogee has similar style.  Cakewalk simply is stale.  It needs to go in a new direction or its gonna be eaten by the competition. Mark my words.😯

Thanks for the compliment, that's sweet. I've never ever heard another musician rule out sex as a motivating factor for him or herself.  Musicians of all people!  :D  But as far as mine own diagnosis of Cakewalk's situation, I'm a structuralist (lacan et al) and Freud weighs heavily in my universe.  (that reminds me, I need to quit eating so much garbage.

There are two weak areas that need to be improved before Sonar can be regarded by the pro community as being in the same league as certain other DAWs. One is video. The other is notation.

Right, except there are DAWs that have neither notation or video and still get more press. I would love Sonar to improve its notation and its video but that still doesn't explain why other DAWs get press without them and Sonar doesn't. There could be something else in play here that we don't know about.

Specialist products have their own niches. Sonar aims to be an all-rounder. It succeeds too.

But I agree that there must be some other factor that we are not seeing. It's hard to account for why Sonar is so widely dismissed.

I have wondered why it doesn't get the same press as some others too. I have no answers to that.

Just because you have the best product on the market doesn't mean that you will be successful. One of the most innovative cars ever produced was the Tucker. How many do you see on the road today?

Sonar is kinda like Linux. Not flashy, doesn't get a ton of press, but it does the job day in and day out.

John
All DAWs have a philosophy. That is they come to the market with a point of view that the developers think will please users.

What kept me coming back to SONAR was that it was more like a physical mixing board than anything else I have used. It felt comfortable. And like a regular mixing board in the real world, it can mix just about anything you throw at it. And it does it without flash or fanfare that says "Hey Look At Me!"

Kinda like the tow truck from the local gas station. Given a good mechanic behind the wheel and it can do wonderful things. It does the job. Period.

I guess you could say in some ways it's a blue collar, working man's DAW.

Those are usually DAWs that have specialized a specific workflow, like Ableton. Sonar is more of a general purpose "classic" DAW to me. I'd pitch it against Cubase, Logic, StudioOne, Reaper, maybe ProTools. But not Ableton, Reason, FruityLoops. They earn their place because they do a certain workflow really really well, not because they're supposed to offer an alternative to ProTools.

I hate to say it but I honestly believe the Sonar move to Mac is doomed unless they price it like Logic and include a bunch of unique features (like ARA) off the bat. I'm never going to convince any of my Mac friends to switch, for sure. I may be sounding like a Logic fanboy here, but I have used it extensively and while it doesn't trump Sonar in every aspect, it's a really powerful package and very competitively priced.

Those are all good points!  As a long time user I have Sonar because of the value, and because it covers a lot of ground with what it offers for the price.  A great general purpose tool that can accomplish most things as far as a virtual music studio goes.  If you can't make something good with the tools provided, it's not Sonar's fault

Market segments may be one thing, but I believe that to have the possibility of ever being considered an "industry standard", it requires cross-platform compatibility (Mac/Windows).

So to expand further on that idea, I will try to make an analogy with another industry.  Another hobby of mine is photography.  Along with music and the virtual studio, I have also been fascinated with the idea of a digital darkroom, and the creative possibilities that world opens up.  So now the modern computer offers a virtually limitless potential for creative expression.

So here we are ... Adobe Photoshop and their creative suite vs. a commercial competitor on Windows, Corel, which develops the Windows only Corel Graphics Suite. I have both, but not the current Adobe cloud subscription plan.

I have on old perpetual licensed copy of Photoshop, and also have the Corel Graphics Suite product. Windows only, of course! Corel can do just about anything that Adobe can, and the workflow is a little bit different, but it's a big load of value for the price.

So there are probably a few other Windows programs to consider here, that I didn't mention, but that's not my point.  It has long been assumed that "if you want to be a professional graphics designer, you had better know Adobe".  Sounds a lot like "if you want to work in a professional recording studio, you had better know Pro Tools".

Industry standards...  Yup!  But I think that there are actually a lot of independent designers and design studios that use Corel successfully.  Just like there are independent composers, producers, and studios using Sonar on Windows.  But for standards, Corel has lacked one thing.  A Mac version.  Everybody learns Adobe on a Mac in school, then when they graduate and go to work, guess what?

If Cakewalk can make Sonar transition to the Mac world successfully, they will have an opportunity to prove that their product is worthy of being an "industry standard".

Not that it isn't really already.  It's just stuck in "other".

It's a great product, but most of the professional creative folks learn their tools of the trade in school and become "imprinted" with industry standards.  That's just how the world works ...

Sex appeals to the younger crowd and im sure Sonar wants to appeal to those users (bring in new customers) but much like the Lincoln Continental it has features and options like no other car and simply does what it should. Drives with class. But if you put crap tires on it, it will not ride good at all. Thus a good soundcard, good PC should be a given.

I have Logic installed as my go-to Mac sequencer. I like many aspects of it, but not enough to draw me away from SONAR.

I totally get this. I'm already invested in Sonar and I'm quicker with it than with any other package (except for some things in Ableton). Even in the unlikely event that I'd ever switch to Mac I doubt I'd be using Logic as main tool at this point. I'd have it for compatibility though.

But for someone who has bought and learned Logic, it seems really unlikely they'd shell out another 500/600 bucks to get a program that is essentially the same. Especially not if it is in any way crippled because, preferences aside, Logic is anything but. It already offers ARA like behavior with its own flextime and flexpitch engines, which are more powerful than what Melodyne Essential covers.

Even apart from that, while Logic 9 looked awful they did a pretty good job on X and one of the first comments I often get on Sonar is how clunky and busy everything looks. I always think of the first time I saw an SSL desk and silently shake my head. But the fact that most included plugins are not Cakewalk branded and have completely individual UI design doesn't help here. The ones that actually are Cakewalk branded look like they were made in the early nineties. Logic has control over all its instruments, plugins and included loops and as a result its preset browser is excellent, like Komplete Kontrol avant la lettre. It's a different world, OSX. Things have to work well but also appear slick.

Give me an argument to sway OSX users to Sonar and I'll definitely try. But I worry about this endeavor and the man hours and money involved. I'm not privy to the "master plan" so I just hope they get it right.

Not to put a wrench in the deal, but Sonar needs to rethink its promotion and advertising side.  That's what greases the squeaky wheel.  Sonar just isn't sexy...it's advertising isn't sexy.  Sexy is what sells.  Please don't laugh at this, it's a real observation.  When I see Z3ta or Rapture or other cakewalk products advertised I just think to myself...stale, old, dusty.  Cakewalk needs to bring sexy back.

I couldn't agree more. I'm also not a fan of the "gloomy" look, so I'm glad to see they're starting to use more blues and whites again.

I've suggested some tag lines and marketing campaigns, but they never got traction. Maybe Cakewalk should sponsor a contest

It's going to be a very hard argument when...I mean, if...Apple starts bundling Logic and Final Cut with their desktops.

Re: Thoughts on Sonar 2016/12/31 20:56:31 (permalink)
Cakewalk recently tried its hand at a slogan and we got "Committed to awesomeness". Obviously aimed at the 15 - 20 year olds. And of course, lets not forget the Bakery. I think that was an attempt at hipness, but who knows.

You can't beat Sonar for value, unless of course companies start giving their stuff away to sell hardware. There's really no counterpoint to that type of competition. Thankfully we're not there yet. By way of an analogy, I have a close friend who's been on the road for 40 years and released a lot of albums. When he sees a new performer explode on the market after a lengthy career of 6 months on YouTube it kills him just a little bit. If Macs come bundled with Logic, every sale will kill Sonar a little bit.

I still maintain that Sonar's legacy is what holds it back. Good ol' Sonar, it'll always be there because it always has been there. No one really has a comparison chart of the top DAW's that lists feature against feature. Maybe it's time to do that. There's 2 main strategies for winning a market. Cost and differentiation. There's always a market for cheap and there's always people that will buy based on features, preferably unique features.

At Christmas I tried a Sony VR system. It cost about $1,400 and was extremely cool. I wouldn't buy one at that price today. However, if somebody develops the right app for me I'd start selling guitars, because it is a great experience that moves simulation to the next level.

Number 6 on that list is mine on my old login. From over two years ago.
They've basically ignored the features suggestions, I gave up on before they moved it. I've completely lost faith in the companies ability to listen, and just because they are to bring in a Mac version, doesn't change my view at all.

From the very far side of the twisted mind of telejazz

Last night was New Years Eve and Three of the top rated DAW's in the music world were looking to party and have a real good time..
Since I gave up drinking and drugging years ago they had asked me to be the designated driver for their evening out.
I knew they were looking for some good clean fun so our first stop was the fun house of a Carnival ...
As we all stood there in the room full of mirrors we all decided to play a little game of mirror mirror on the wall ...
After drawing USB sticks to determine who would go first they each took a turn at the mirror ...

Abelton Live 9 stepped up to the mirror first and said "mirror mirror on the wall who's the coolest DAW of them all "
Now I was standing there and I have to say I started getting a little scared when the room got so quiet I could hear my heart beating loudly in my chest .
Then all of a sudden Kaboom ...the mirror lit up and in one big flash of light the mirror exploded into a thousand  pieces of reflective glass  just like a diamond .
The next thing I know is we are all in a room with a few thousand people dancing .
The girls are looking so hot and sexy under the flashing lights as they danced to The EDM music coming out of the sub-woofers . I was like WHOA what rock have I been hiding under all these years ..
Then I see Abelton walk over to the DJ and they start doing some high fives .
The next thing I know the DJ hands Abelton the headphones and steps aside from his rig and turns the reins of his sound rig over to Abelton ...
The beat started getting real tribal ...mixed in with a little bit of jungle vibe w a touch of poly rhythmic action going on.
Things went on like that for about a set . I didn't want to leave because I was having way to much fun ..

Next thing we all know were back in the room full of mirrors ....
After giving our self's a few moments to regain our composure we eagerly awaited for Pro Tools turn at the mirror

Pro Tools walks up to the mirror , clasps his hands , cracks his knuckles and says
"mirror mirror on the wall who's the most professional DAW of them all "
Now at this point I have to admit that I wasn't half as scared as I was before only because I had some idea that something was gonna happen ..What it was i did not know , but I was ready for it or so i thought .
It was then the ground began to shake as the room grew dark . The edges of the mirror became golden filled with jewels and precious stones much like a picture would be framed in an art museum if the museum was only displaying rare priceless riches  .
A great winged Lion greeted us as we walked through the mirror and just like a magic carpet we rode on his back through the sky to a purple waterfall where he bid us goodbye and told us to ascend . As we made our way ascending up the great purple waterfall  I was struck by the fact that the water was not water at all .
The waterfall  was composed of great beams of purifying  purple light and the sensation of rising felt more like a form of levitation.
Once we got to the top a great marble room with large pillars was revealed to us ..
I could hear the gentle strains of music permeating through out the great hall .
It was then it happened . The room became filled with the sound of music ever so sublime .
As the music played great recording studios of all pedigree started to materialize in their full glory in this great marble hall ..
I was struck by the beauty of it all .
As each studio appeared the room was filled with the familiar sounds of music I had hear before ...
The stark realization started to hit me that there were no engineers or studio workers in any of the studios that were magnificently passing before my eyes and ears ...
Then a great laughter shook the hall ...
I looked around to determine the source of this laughter and to my surprise  I had caught out of the corner on my eye Pro Tools smiling at me with a mischievous benevolent smile on his face  ...
I asked Pro Tools "where is everybody "?  "all the engineers and studio staff ?"
Pro Tools smiled at me and said " everybody is here , they are just taking a well deserved break " " would you like to meet them "?
I said "sure I would love to meet some of these super talented people ...I could sure learn a lot from them "
Pro Tools said " sure lets go I'll introduce you "
After walking down a large hallway for what seemed like a mile and a half I started to hear the muffled sound of people having fun on the other side of the large doorway I was standing in front of....
Pro Tools placed a hand on my shoulder and asked me " are you ready for this "? I said " yeah I'm ready "
The large darkly  stained Oak door swung wide open and to tell you the truth I was actually a little bit surprised at what I saw ..
I saw what looked like to me a large banquet room just like  something you would see in a royal castle or something like that but instead of tables for eating and dining it looked like the room was set up for parlor games ..
One things for sure it looked and sounded like everybody in there was having a lot of fun ...
As my eyes adjusted to the lighting of the room I did a double take and turned to Pro Tools and asked " are they doing what I think they are doing " ? Pro Tools looked at me and gave me a non verbal nod of his head ..
It didn't matter that I had tried to speak in a calm voice ...I did try as hard as I could to ...honestly I did ..
I remember blurting out in what must have sounded like an adolescent virgins teens voice  who was attending his first pajama party where someone gave him his first look at a girly mags pin up  centerfold ....
OMG. I shouted as my voice broke and my throat cackled ...
WOOOSH the room fell silent and everybody looked at me for a sec ..after what seemed an eternity to me everybody just went back to what they were doing ...
I looked at Pro Tools and said " Hey they are all playing cards " Pro Tools looked at me and said " Yeah I know "
I said " Yeah , but they ain't using money or chips ...they are using piles of Platinum and Gold Records instead ."
Pro Tools smiled , looked me dead in the eye and said " Yep , money isn't everything Kenny , look at the bright side when you start making and getting some of those type of chips , you can pretty much write your own check "
I said " Amen "

WHOA what happened ? I'm back in the room full of mirrors again ...

Up next is SONAR ....just as SONAR was making it's way to the mirror the mirror says "stop wait for a second" ..
Then the mirror looks at me and asks " say aren't you the designated driver for this crew " ?
I say " yes I am , but i didn't draw a USB stick to get a turn " Then the mirror said " don't worry about it "
"Are you a member of the SONAR Forum " I say " Yes I am "
The mirror asks " Are you in good standing over there "?
I say " it depends on who you ask ..I think I'm on thin ice most of the time "
The mirror says "Good " I say " Really " ?
The mirror says " Yeah kid that means there's room for growth "
"now look into my eyes and tell me what you see"
I say to the mirror " you don't want me to do the mirror mirror thing "?  the mirror again says "NO "
" look into my eyes and tell me what you see"
OK mirror " I see a buterfly standing on a leaf proudly talking with a cocoon "
good Kenny " what do you think that means ? "
" hhhhmm , a butterfly didn't start out as a butterfly right ? a butterfly started out as a Caterpillar , then it went into a cocoon and eventually it became a butterfly "
" Very Good Telejazz there is hope for you yet "
" Hey mirror , so what do you want me to do here " ?
" I want you to go back to the forum and tell them the story of the butterfly and I want you to tell it just like this "

There once was a butterfly who was overheard telling a cocoon "Yes you too can fly someday once you drop the cocoon "

You got that K....
" yeah I got it ..man there gonna kill me over there for saying all this stuff and posting it "
Hey K don't worry about it ...you ain't exactly flying yet either your self ..you still got the protection of the cocoon ..
" Yeah that's true " "do you think they might get where your going with this "?
" some will some won't ...if they don't like it they can always pick up the story where you left off right " ?
Yeah that might work
OK then .....

Happy New Years '

Re: Thoughts on Sonar 2017/01/02 09:58:04 (permalink)
I started using Cakewalk software in 2000 when I bought the original Guitar Tracks.  It was an improvement from the Tascam 4 track I had been using (even though it was sad compared to Sonar).  I've went through a couple of versions of Guitar Tracks before I picked up Sonar 8.5.  Now I have Platinum and it's amazing the capabilities it has in comparison to the older stuff.  I haven't had many problems, usually it was just my older under powered computers (which has been resolved).  I picked up Harrison Mixbus to check out because of all of the hype (and it's cheap), but it just isn't nearly as user friendly to me (maybe because I've used Sonar for so long).  Since I got the lifetime updates it seems unlikely I'll ever be switching.  I think it's more about what you are comfortable with than the actual DAW since they all seem fairly advanced now.

Tracy

I'm positive that Sonar's biggest drawback is that it's been around forever and we just take it for granted.

I think Sonar's biggest drawback is that it's quite broken for anything other than the one work-flow that they expect you to use. Maybe when ripple editing is implemented and the take lane/comping mess is fixed things will be different.

There are two weak areas that need to be improved before Sonar can be regarded by the pro community as being in the same league as certain other DAWs. One is video. The other is notation.

This is a common theme among other DAW forums (Reason, FL Studio, any other Daw not named Pro Tools). I don't get why the end user needs this security issue of a DAW being accepted by a "pro community".  I would like to see how revenue comes from a "pro community" vs. the home studio, hobbyist or whatever.  I would assume more revenue comes from the latter.   The most popular DAW isn't even recognized by the "pro community" and I don't think that's a serious issue by their developers since they are never short of revenue.

These threads pop up everywhere.  I never understood why this is always an issue with an end user.  Two things they should be sensitive about is improvements and the developer going under.  So many in the DAW community fail to realize when it comes to the final product the listener doesn't care which DAW is used. I have yet to see a DAW in the credits on those Amazon mp3s. So we care about the wrong thing. People can be too sensitive when it comes to software.  Check out the never ending Mac vs. Pc, Linux distros, Battlefield vs. Call of Duty, these get ugly and it's just software.

I run SONAR on an i7 2600K with 16 gigs of RAM and I have just about one crash every 7-8 months. That crash is almost always because of me doing something stoopid like inserting a massive latency plug while the project is running.

I have plugs and synths from at least 60 vendors. I run a 64bit OS, 64bit SONAR and 64bit plugs. FWIW, I almost *never* use a 32bit plug.

+1 here, but I am running an i3 second generation (Sandy Bridge) yes, I know it is Old and underpowered but I don't do a lot of MIDI so it works just fine for 20 or so tracks of Audio (typically recorded not looped).  This includes using effects on all channels (typically Pro Channel with 1 or two plug ins MAX on any one channel).  Sends to buses for reverb for vocals, delay for drums, Parallel Compression for drums, Vocal Bus Main Drum Bus, Guitar Bus Back Up Vocal Bus...

Even with ALL of this the CPUs are < 20% all the way across the board and I seldom see any crashes.  I do not use 32 bit Plug ins at all.

SPLAT on a Home built i3 16 GB RAM 64-bit Windows 10 Home Premium 120GB SSD (OS) 2TB Data Drive.  Behringer XR-18 USB 2.0 Interface. FaderPort control.

I have been a cakewalk and then a sonar user for over 15 years.  Have never really used anything else.  It has always been pretty freaking solid.  Until recently.   I don't know if it's Win 10 or what but platinum crashes a lot. or malfunctions.  I have reported my errors etc.  Got no reply from cakewalk other than noting that my error was reported.
I have recently got into reaper.  I think it is fabulous.  amazing for 60 bucks. And a great manual as well as an absolutely excellent set of tutorial videos.   It also has a large community/forum.  I am actually leaning towards making reaper my main daw if sonar doesn't stabilize for me

1. No Mac version.
2. Earned reputation as buggy with X1, X2 releases
3. Has the feeling of a lot of options cobbled  together. Seems complicated.
4. Just doesn't do any one  job better than the competition.
5. Continues  to shoot own foot with inexplicable lack of support issues.
I am a lifetime member and have been with the company since the DOS days but if i was starting out what compelling reason is there to choose Sonar over the competition?

This is a great bit of writing.  Highly imaginative and inventive.  Worth the reading.  And Kenny you are in very good standing on this forum.  Did some one say psychedelic?

Re: Thoughts on Sonar 2017/01/06 07:17:36 (permalink)
Digital audio workstations are very similar to vehicles.
We all have our favorite kind, they all get from point A to point B. We all use a certain DAW because of its workflow that suit our needs. I would like to see Cakewalk improve on many things this year. I wont go in to detail (I'd take up half this page) or I wont list MY personal peeves. Learning a new software can hold a person back from venturing out in to the new world of trying something else. But I would be damed if I stayed with a software that didn't do what I wanted. Sonar still does that for me and it does it well. Im one of those people who never take for granted the things I am able to do in these times we live in, Call me the guy who is easy to please, call me passive but don't call me a guy who settles. I never have and I never will.

I am very pleased with the strides, updates and changes Cakewalk has made in this past year of 2016.
I have not been happy about every change, but I have been pleased with the changes that Cakewalk has done to make this a better product. If I wasn't pleased about these changes I wouldn't be here and I surely wouldn't write a "Im leaving Cakewalk" note in hopes Cakewalk may see my message and think im the one user they don't want to lose. (Those threads lead to a pile on from every single disgruntled user who visits this forum) Cakewalk has never worked like that, they have always looked at the big picture, tried to please their user base but still keep on their own track and I don't blame them for using this strategy. It has kept them in business for how long now ? 20+ years. I believe it appears to be working just fine.
Anyway, this thread isn't personalized for anyone here, I hardly read previous posts so my apology's if anyone believes so. Matter of fact the OP (John) is a good guy who I respect.

Peace and lets hope this is a great year for the product we use known as Sonar.
