Time Saver: Hold Ctrl when in Track Pane applies changes to all tracks of same type.
Just found a real gem. Instead of multi selecting stuff all the time to mute, solo, change i/o, adjust levels, etc... apparently you can just hold Ctrl and the changes will apply to all tracks of that type (MIDI or Audio but not both). That's pretty cool. Just thought I'd share although I'm sure many of you already knew that. I'm finding so many neat little tricks as I bumble through the manual. I've also learned how to properly punch/loop record today (which is going to be awesome) and found the Mute New Takes option which was driving me nuts. Don't mind me. I'm just blathering. Hope you all are having a good Sunday. Cheers.

It's called quick grouping. Works on a multitude of things as you've found including inserting, deleting, replacing PC modules, inserting sends, etc. etc. not just in the Track View either.

Hi, Karl. Hi, Scott. See I was under the impression Quick Grouping involved selecting the desired tracks with either Ctrl or Shift and then applying the changes. I didn't realize it could be done by just holding Ctrl. BTW... could you guys take a look at this thread for me? http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2750665 If anybody would know how to do this it would be you smart fellows. Cheers.

And I guess to explain further I thought to adjust stuff like that the track numbers had to be blue. Silly and basic I know but I thought it was pretty cool. Cheers.

It does work on selected only tracks (when they're blue) but works on all tracks (of the same type) when none are selected. Another top tip is that with nothing selected at all most options and commands such as export treat that as if you'd done a "Select All".

Yup. Learned that on my last export with the "Edit > Select > None" step. I kind of learned stuff erratically just to get stuff done but man did I ever miss a lot. Fixing that now. Cheers.

I hate to put a damper on this but no it is not universal. Load a MIDI file natively and try to use ctrl+ outs to change the MIDI outs. That is a bug that CW is aware of. Further it wont work with banks either but not just with MIDI files. If you save the project as a cwp file after a reload the outs will work but not the banks. In Sonar 8.5 and older this was very easy to do and I had a shortcut F key on my Mackie Control to access this in both cases. This is no longer the case. I do think the non working of the ctrl key in these instances is a bug and it was not fixed in the A patch.

Thanks for the warning, John. Does that apply when the tracks are manually selected as well (the track numbers are Blue)? Again OT but does anyone know about that audition at current Now Time question? I'm kind of guessing I might be out of luck there which is a shame. Cheers.

Okay, thanks man. I'll have to remember that. On another topic... I think I figured out what MSR stands for. Mute/Solo/Record? Was playing around with that menu earlier. That's another pretty handy little thingy. Cheers. oh and sorry for being such a pain lately, guys... I'm literally spending all my waking/sane hours poking around the program so I might be getting a little tedious.

Beep you are preaching to the choir. I can't speak for the others but I am very much involved with your threads. I like the enthusiasm you show and it rubs off on me. Yes I know most of the things you write about but it doesn't hurt for me to read about them and be reminded about them. More importantly you bring back the wonder that we can loose over time. We are never too old or too wise to appreciate someone enjoying new things. Further you are a very nice fellow that adds a lot to the adventure you are allowing me to share with you. You just keep on doing what you are doing and all will be well in the world.

Thanks for that, John. I've had a pretty rough go of things for more than a few years so yanno... just trying to get into a good spot again. I'd much rather just be making and recording music but as I'm sure you know not understanding the programs is extremely limiting. It's winter now and I've eliminated a huge amount of personal distractions in my life so I'm just trying to cram as much knowledge into my little Beepster head before any new mayhem pops up. The free Grooves pass CW just gave us could not have happened at a better time too. Once I've muddle through the manual and made all my notes for that I'm going to spend an entire month going through the vids and taking notes along the way. Once I come out the other end of all this I hope to finally be able to mix and produce with confidence. I've always been pretty good at making music. It's the whole getting it to sound right on "tape" that needs work. Once I nail that I think life will be much happier. Cheers, bro. You rock. Same goes for the rest of you guys.

@Paul... That's good to hear, man. I do very much like to help out as much as I can. When I showed up here last spring I knew almost NOTHING so it's only fair I pay it forward. Sharing helps me retain knowledge too. As the questions come up in the forum queue it's kind of like a random pop quiz on audio production. Such a useful forum in many ways. Cheers and best to ya. :-)

You just keep on doing what you are doing and all will be well in the world. All I have to add to this is a big +1. You're pretty much learning the way I did/do. 1. Pick a task, lets say drum mapping. 2. Read and watch all available resources. 3. Go to Sonar and apply what you've picked up. 4. If something doesn't seem to be working as expected come to these here forums and ask what and where I went wrong. 5. Pick your next task. Then you'll start having your own little workflow and find a comfortable way of working. Sonar releases X3 and we start again. Welcome to the fold. Mike

Heheh... well I'm hoping the next release will hold onto much of the current X series format. X2 has changed a bit but I'm finding many things are still done the same. After watching some of the older vids that are done in 8.? there does seem to be a massive difference... but that's because of the introduction of the Skylight interface. I feel bad for the guys who hopped on board right before X1. That would be annoying. :-/ Cheers, Mike.

Beep, just in case you somehow manage to run out of manuals, tutorials and videos please allow me to recommend one more well worth looking into. Mix It Like A Record With Charles Dye. He does use PT but the info applies to listening and mixing, not how to use a particular DAW. A very good source of mixing knowledge. Mike

Awesome. Always looking for ways to hone my skills. I do however have a massive backlog of tuts/manuals waiting to be absorbed. Getting itchy to make some tunes again but I gotta be patient I guess. I've been hacking away at the manual non stop for a week now and only just broke page 200 a little earlier today. lol

Beep, that sounds to me like I'd have to do the reading. It would be much easier for me if you could just record your notes and export them in MP3 format. Then just fly on down to my house, upload the file to my iPod and iPhone, put in my earbuds (to my ears of course) then press play. Awesome, thanks . Oh and it'd be great if you could have this done, loaded, playing and out of my house by 5:30 pm this Thursday Mmmkay? I have a pizza coming and I'm not really up for sharing any with you. (Just kidding of course Beepster my good man. It's not that I don't want to share, it's just that I'm cheap as well as lazy). Scott I've been reading your books since version 6. You do an excellent job of explaining things in a way that makes it easy to grasp and retain. Even tho at this point I only use them to learn how to use the new functions and toys in each new version of Sonar, I find it money well spent. It's nice to follow through and do things step by step. I happen to be one of those people who learn better by doing rather then reading so I read through a section first than go back and do it along with the book. It sticks to my brain cell better that way. Mike
