But they (Andrew for sure) have alluded to something better than just "send us $199 (call it 200) up-front for my annual renewal"  (assuming, I want it) especially since this time around I'm paying BEFORE I get anything new.

Where are you getting $199?  My "up-front" annual renewal says $149.

And I'm more than happy to pay it again (Mine is good until Feb, so I can wait a bit).  I don't understand this sense of fear that you're going to get fleeced.  I don't think it can be clearer... If you like what you got this past year, it'll be more of the same (quality-wise).  If you're happy where you are now, then stay there.  Worst case, don't renew right away.  Stay put for a month (or two) until more details are revealed.  You lose absolutely nothing with this approach.

Well... I have been over to the store and can confirm that once I login and select Buy Now for Sonar Platinum, I am now quoted a price of £11.89 per month as opposed to the £39.90 Cleverbridge mention.

Button pressed and one very happy Sir William. Thanks for all the suggestions. It was confusing to begin with, but all well in the end.

Re: Time to start talking about the new year subscription options/changes? 2016/01/06 16:12:47 (permalink) ☄ Helpfulby G.W.VanderHaeghe 2016/01/06 17:26:21
All ,  JonD in particular

Correct it (now) says $149, they've cleaned up the various renewal info cost pages in last few weeks (last price check by me was just before Xmas - I knew my annual renewal was coming up right after holidays so I was tracking and started watching the posts here on this FIRST round of annual "renewals").

So my mistake for not re-checking by actually hitting the "buy"  button to see what price popped-up.

EDIT

just found page again (with $199 annual renewal cost)

http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Versions#start

done EDIT

Other pages that said annual renewal for Platinum would be $199 are GONE (I think monthly was also higher at $19  but I don't even consider monthly options so wasn't paying close attention to that price).

My apologies for "fear" spreading () but you/we are still paying up front for TBD (again I'm sure (hope) we'll be happy.)

I have had to do this, pay before deliver of new "features" and maintenance patches (and sometimes it is like pulling teeth to get them)  with other expensive commercial statistical packages and other professional analysis tools for many years but:  I HAVE NEVER liked it.   It's the only way some companies do business - so it is what it is (take it or leave it).   If I wasn't getting a tax write off, and some partial reimbursements by the company I consult with, I'd use less powerful and less expensive tools - and make up difference in capabilities with grey cell  "sweat equity."

Since this is the FIRST annual Cakewalk renewal for ALL of us (some have already begun their first year - mine starts next week - I'll pull trigger on day it's due) after this year is when I will re-evaluate staying or going (but at my age it may be moot )

Peace (now I go silent for another decade+ )

re: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3347672

This does not sound all that clever. I do count 12 credited monthly payments, which in most of the western world is a year. So they are correct that you are due to make another payment on Jan 22, 2016, but there is no reasonable construction of the agreement that you will own the perpetual license after a year or 12 months or 12 consecutive monthly payments that you would not qualify for. You would only be required to make the Jan 22, 2016 payment if you wish to continue your subscription.

The only clear statement of entitlement that I have been able to find is in a FAQ on the Cakewalk Store:
http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/SONAR-FAQ#start

If I choose "Pay-as-you-go" monthly payments, can I cancel before 12 months?
Yes, however 12 consecutive monthly payments are required to permanently activate SONAR and any updates you have received. If you cancel payment or don’t pay for at least 12 months, SONAR will revert to demo mode.

You should have a permanently activated Sonar at this point.

C'mon now you know what they mean.

In fact it means that he can continue to use the product as it stood on his last payment.

Just like any one still using X3, X2, X1, 8.5.3 etc.

So Cleverbridge counts payment 1 as "0" in their schedule. At this point you have made 12 payments therefore you own the product. It won't revert to demo mode.

Also, in the schedule posted above, your 12th payment will be charged at a new lower price of £11.90 VAT Inclusive. And that's the price you will be charged at moving forward. So basically they are just starting on a different scale but that changes nothing for you. If it's easier to understand in the Cleverbridge scheme, then:

0) 1/22/2015 8:47 AM 69510948 1 £39.90
1) 2/22/2015 8:47 AM 70913919 1 £39.90

bluesplayerHow would you respond to this ad from say Microsoft or Native Instruments or.... any other SW:  "send us $200 and we'll get back to you."

That's not an accurate summary. A more accurate summary would be "send us $149 and we'll keep doing next year what we did for you last year." (And I might add when you first bought Kontakt, or Kore for that matter, you had no idea whether the program would be supported with 3rd party libraries, or the extent of that support. With Kontakt, it turned out great. With Kore...not so great.)

When the membership program first started there was a lot of "but how will we KNOW what we're going to get?" Well, now everyone knows the cadence of updates, what typical updates include, the number of bug fixes you get over the course of a year, the content, etc. You may not know the DETAILS of what you're going to get - I doubt even Cakewalk knows everything you're going to get next year - but the generalities are now obvious.

As I've said before...if you like what happened in 2015, renew. If you don't like what happened in 2015, don't renew.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

As far as renewals. We'll be announcing pricing and availability next week. We are just dotting some "i's" and crossing some "t's". It will be better than the $199 on the site now. Just wait another week or less please :)

Thanks again Andrew. I understand Cakewalk finalising things, but this should not be this confusing with with effectively 2 weeks to go. I could be £28 out of pocket at this rate. I DO wish to renew, but not by paying £39.90 this month.

Unfortunately this year I had to pay more for less. I had to downgrade from Platinum to Professional and it still cost more than Platinum cost last year. And that's without the inclusion of Melodyne and AD2. This year looks to be less of a bargain from last year. Global economies have hit my purchasing power.

Regardless of the outcome, I feel that Cakewalk has dropped the ball for not setting up a renewal process. I liked what happened in 2015, but Craig has missed the mark on his comments because it's not the same at all. Last year I upgraded from X3 to Platinum and bought in to subscription path for $149. This year I paid more for much less.

WTF!!!

I was told today by a mod that going to the store and buying Sonar again was the official update path. I unhappily did so and now your telling me that there will be another deal offered next week? I can't believe this BS. How can you screw things up so badly after a great year. I am P*SSED.

Now I feel like I need be mad about something.  I will go review my CW subscription status and return with fiery speculation and hysteria.

Sarcasm aside, I think CW has proven their commitment to the customer base. However this pans out (get it, pan?), we will be ok.  And no, I am not on CW's payroll.  Though, a few more of these brown nosing replies and just maybe I can earn a spot in PR....

I'm guessing all the cool stuff in the upcoming "deal"  will be all there for you,  so just wait a little before you really get P*SSED... it will work out well for everyone.  it always has.  If not I'll be P*SSED with you even tho I waited.  Fair is fair.

I liked what happened in 2015, but Craig has missed the mark on his comments because it's not the same at all. Last year I upgraded from X3 to Platinum and bought in to subscription path for $149. This year I paid more for much less.

But here's what you're missing. When you paid the $149 last year, you paid for the upgrade to Platinum. As part of the deal, and because people didn't know what to expect from the membership program (and frankly neither did Cakewalk), Cakewalk added a free year's membership and the right to keep what you received during the membership program, whether you renewed or not. The goal was to convince people that what they got during the membership program for 2015 would be worth $149, and so they would renew.

Loyal Cakewalk users ended up getting a super-duper, one-time-only deal to kick off the membership program (and I can't believe some people [not you] grouse about Cakewalk not taking care of their loyal customers). No software company could stay in business if going forward, they kept offering two updates for the price of one, especially considering the degree to which software and intellectual property have been devalued. (In large part, I think we can thank Apple for that because they sell software for next to nothing so they can the make big margins on their hardware. Their $800,000,000,000 in the bank didn't come from selling Logic Pro for $199...trust me on that...before Apple bought emagic, Logic sold for $999.)

I honestly don't think anyone who understands the expense and effort involved in creating, supporting, and marketing software on the same level as SONAR can look at what was received during the membership program and not think it was worth $149. Whether it's worth it to you or not is a different subject.

Re: Time to start talking about the new year subscription options/changes? 2016/01/06 20:14:00 (permalink)
Fair enough Craig. I'm a Cakewalk guy till the end and thought last year was amazing. It was not advertised as a one time only super duper deal, it was advertised as the new way forward that would benefit producer and consumer alike. I feel that they have delivered in spades.

My years in quality management and business process development have made me a bit of a hard-liner when it comes to general business practices. The management of the renewal process should have been sorted last year when they started putting together the 2016 business plan and calculating projected income streams going forward. Don't let customers wonder what to do with their money. If they were prepared, there would be no discussion because the way forward would have been clearly communicated in advance.

I have contacted support about my mistaken purchase and I'm sure it will get sorted out.

Regards, John

Ideally, yes. But look at the responses in this forum, which vary from "I love it and I'm signing up immediately for another year" to "I find all these updates confusing" to "My internet sucks, I want physical media" to "I'm not being rewarded for my loyalty, it should cost next to nothing" to "I'm just going to wait and see if there's a better deal" to "I just want to buy fixes and not new features, I'm fine with what I have" and all the variants in between.

If SONAR users were forced into a single option, like Adobe does, then it would be easy to figure out a single policy. Making a sincere attempt to accommodate a group of diverse people whose desires are all over the map is far more difficult. Look how much trouble Cakewalk got into last January because many people asked for a monthly payment option, and when CW did it, immediately there were cries of "That's it!!! I will NEVER buy subscription software where I can't use what I've bought!" from people who didn't read past the first sentence...

[sigh]

Sir William
Andrew Rossa [Cakewalk]
Sir William
Here is Cleverbridge's explanation -

Thank you for contacting cleverbridge.
We did recheck our records, and we can confirm that you have one last payment due on January 22, 2016 in the amount of £39.90.
Your subscription started on January 22, 2015, and it is a 12-month subscription; therefore, the last payment is due on January 22, 2016.
After payment is received on January 22, 2016, you will own the product. Please see below for a graphic with the item intervals:
0) 1/22/2015 8:47 AM 69510948 1 £39.90
1) 2/22/2015 8:47 AM 70913919 1 £39.90
2) 3/22/2015 9:47 AM 72203660 1 £39.90
3) 4/22/2015 9:47 AM 73686627 1 £39.90
4) 5/22/2015 9:47 AM 75033646 1 £39.90
5) 6/22/2015 9:47 AM 76238314 1 £39.90
6) 7/22/2015 9:47 AM 77397697 1 £39.90
7) 8/22/2015 9:47 AM 78706316 1 £39.90
8) 9/22/2015 9:47 AM 80144737 1 £39.90
9) 10/22/2015 9:47 AM81621539 1 £39.90
10) 11/22/2015 8:47 AM83138748 1 £39.90
11) 12/22/2015 8:47 AM84764661 1 £39.90
12) 1/22/2016 8:47 AM
Should you have any other questions, please let us know.

Count my total payments. Do you get 12? Why start the counter at 0?
Since when has a 12 month subscription comprised of 13 payments?

2) 3/22/2015 9:47 AM 72203660 1 £39.90
3) 4/22/2015 9:47 AM 73686627 1 £39.90
4) 5/22/2015 9:47 AM 75033646 1 £39.90
5) 6/22/2015 9:47 AM 76238314 1 £39.90
6) 7/22/2015 9:47 AM 77397697 1 £39.90
7) 8/22/2015 9:47 AM 78706316 1 £39.90
8) 9/22/2015 9:47 AM 80144737 1 £39.90
9) 10/22/2015 9:47 AM81621539 1 £39.90
10) 11/22/2015 8:47 AM83138748 1 £39.90
11) 12/22/2015 8:47 AM84764661 1 £39.90  (Product is now Unlocked)
12) 1/22/2016 8:47 AMXXXXXXXX   £11.90

Thank you Andrew, but check the top of Cleverbridge's response -

One last payment due on 22nd January 2016 in the amount of £39.90

That's not what you are telling me will happen.

the idiots at cleverbridge clearly can't do maths... and that's not a 12th payment, it's the 13th, the list is zero-based (ask one of your devs to explain)

so glad i held off, this is a mess

Notice to everyone.

There is no need to purchase any renewal before your existing subscription runs out.
The actual price for the renewal (this is the first year) has not been published yet.
It is not yet a year (365 days) since the first early adopters started their subscription.
The actual price (and any special offers) WILL be published before any renewal needs to be made.
If/when your subscription runs out, Sonar WILL keep working.
Lookout for an announcement in the very near future...

PLEASE post further questions to one of the many threads in the Store forum.

Thank you.
